I greatly appreciate your video. Out of all the videos on here, yours was the best one. I just finished a rear brake job on my 06 HHR and it was a horrible experience. I don't ever want to go through that ever again. The worst part were the main springs. Took two days to finish. Thank you for all your help!

ShoJay92 yeah those rears are a pain for sure. I am old school, and try to embrace new things. However, I think it would have been better just to have discs on the rear rather than fight these shoes.

@@SteveAZ711 I wish it was that easy. The only way I can convert my HHR to rear disc, is I would need the SS(super sport) version of my car or Cobalt SS as a donor car so I could transfer the whole rearend including the disc brakes over to my car. I've considered but I cannot find a donor. I watched your other video where you used those spring clamp brackets. I wish I had those today and yesterday, the job would have been so much easier. So tonight I bought a pair off Amazon. I literally could not believe how much of a PITA it was to do that job. My next car will have 4 wheel disc brakes and will never own a car with drums ever again. You are an amazing mechanic by the way. I love your HHR videos. Good job my brother. Cheers!

Ed I think a narrower set of vice grips will work. I did not want to go hunt one up and in the video I used my bulkier pair that did not fit.. Get ready for some muscle work though.

well I did the rear brakes on my 2007 HHR what a pain, the worst brake shoes I ever had to do. all done now

@@ke6bnl That was my first impression as well. Did you John Wayne that spring on with vice grips or use one of the tools I showed in the videos? Twenty years ago I would have laughed at that spring tension...not so much now though.

@@SteveAZ711 I used vice grips, also the spring for the emergency brake was very tight, not like yours, I had to use A needle nose vice grip to hold the spring.

What year is your hhr? I bought new hardware for my 2010 and did not have a horseshoe spring in it.

There must be a special tool to get the parking brake spring compressed so the cable is exposed allowing it to go into the slot on the shoe. That was just impossible. FYI: The car I did had been "serviced" by the dealer religiously. If they had been doing their "36-point inspection!", the drums wouldn't have been frozen on, and the parking brake pivot on the passenger side wouldn't have been frozen either. Because they would have been taking those drums off to inspect the brakes when they rotated tires.

There is a tool for that spring. I believe needle nose vice grips may work just as well. The HHR rear brakes are a pain for sure.

That is what I thought at first and I was saying to myself...why didn't they put disc brakes on the rear like the HHR SS. However, It really is more simple that the older stuff that has at least 3 springs that seem to break all to often.
