Belt sander linisher

I have a need to sand some concave, internal, curved faces, which is difficult to do with many sanders, so I've re-purposed my belt sander with a curved platen to do the job. It looks rather Heath-Robinson, but it works superbly well!

A number of people are asking me about the platen. It's Douglas Fir. The lighter pieces are Scandinavian Redwood. It's just stuff I had in the scrap box. There is no lubrication on the block, it is just sanded smooth. Any slick would get transferred to the back of the belt and then the traction from the drive roller would be reduced even further, which, of course, I don't want. It's barely enough as it is, due to the reduced arc of contact. The block does not get hot, so it is not a problem.

Genius as always! I guess you could buy over sized sander belts as well. Why doesn't the platen block burst into flames from friction?

Good point! I do actually, but it chatters a lot so I rarely use it. TBH I never thought of it.
