I came from a marriage that was dying several years after my parents married. I think my older siblings got the chance at a stereotypical "nuclear" family, but by the time I, and a year later my younger brother came along, it was pretty much over. I just remember rancor, and arguments, and lots of alcohol between the two. If anyone thinks THAT is a good environment to raise children in, then they're nuts. But at that point, neither would have been strong enough to put aside their own demons to deal with the union they were in. It is unfortunate, but not everything works out. And i knew even ad 10 years old that these two should be divorced. One reason I agree with "no fault divorce". I promise as the child of two parents who stayed together well after the damage had been done to their children, if one wants out, let them get out and all can come to terms with it. I also find it fascinating that this bonehead Crowder makes a point of stating that his kids "are not to blame." No duh! genius!. Frankly I'm surprised a woman was able to stomach a relationship with him long enough to have children. She should win an olympic medal for endurance on that alone.

@@heidithesausage I think people still have this notion that "children are resilient" when it comes to growing up in dysfunctional families. Oh sure, they'll rebound. But the fact is, that to grow up in a dysfunctional family, children take on dysfunctional habits that help them navigate the weirdness of that family but that don't work well in the outside world when they get out there. And it can take a long time to erase those tapes in your head. One could equate what they go through as adults as PTSD. But it's never taken seriously cause...you know, they had a two parent household. Divorce isn't the problem. The problem is when a couple, whether married or not, can not put the shit aside to help raise their children in a healthy environment. I would have loved to see my mom, possibly happy with a new husband and my father happy with a new wife, than to endure what I ended up enduring because society felt they should stay together (and to be fair, I think my mom would have left long before she finally did except, at the time, it was remarkably hard for a woman to divorce because not only would getting a job to support the children be a problem, she couldn't even establish credit because all the credit was in her husband's name, despite the fact that she might have been working extra to pay off the debts (as my mom did). We need to teach the reality of divorce. And why it might be for some people. There are couples who simply need counseling. And there are couple for whom that rift can never be closed. That should be honored too.

I had a friend who had 4 siblings, their parents hated being married to each other but they hid it well. They decided to stay together until my friend was 18. This is when they decided to drop the bomb on them all, they were all over 18 and did not really know their parents were unhappy. They were all devastated and ended up in a spiral of alccohol or drug abuse. They were so traumatised because they felt their parents lied to them their whole lives.
