You could tell which memories were connected with accents. He slipped between several throughout the whole interview while reminiscing. It was a delight to watch, being someone with an incredibly fluid and flexible accent myself. Anytime I talk about family, I tend to switch to my more homegrown accent. If I'm recalling time spent in a specific location, I'll inadvertently slip into a pinch of whatever accent is common there. It was annoying when I first realized how often I do it, but I've practiced and developed that propensity towards accents and can now use them in voice work or simply as party tricks.

What Steven is talking about is Social conditioning. Most people arent aware about how or what they think, feel or believe in is influenced by the environment around them and what is considered the status quo. Steven finds it interesting cuz he experienced it first hand but it truly is something most people arent aware of cuz they dont experience that culture shock. In my philosophy class we called it a "lens". You have to imagine how other people from different backgrounds might see and interpret the same thing/situation.. So lets say we take a poem and we talk about how i a student might see it (a students lens) vs how an english major or a shakespearean historian might see it (seeing it through the lens of an english major, etc). Steven had his lens but he realized with his extended family that there are more lenses to see the world through so he is curious of the boundaries/capabilites of lenses. Its really fascinating and it takes a huge social awareness both internally and externally to recongize something like this.

29.42 I like how Steven He put this into words. And I wasn't even as cut off from US culture as he was in China as (I'm from the Caribbean) but we also do the "yuh getting fat" and comments on the body which is so nonchalant. And so when i moved to the US, I (out of empathy and wanting to know if they were ok) told a girl on my soccer team "yeah you look tired" and the way she got mad totally startled me 😅
@logansmith2590Ай бұрын
The US social culture, as if posting this, doesn't seem to find it socially appropriate to appear and be lesser than handing yourself to peak performance or else "you aren't successful". It's kind of complicated but not really. It's just people pressuring people not to be comfortable being human. And struggling while simply existing. From big to small things.

Omg, Daniel- That flashback to when you did martial arts as a kid reminded me of my few months in Jiu-Jitsu. I have ASD and as an 8-year-old kid, I tended to be uncooperative and reactive, I'd tend to cry whenever I was physically uncomfortable. Jiu-Jitsu required me to bend awkwardly, so I'd express my discomfort as I did. The instructor would call me a crybaby and have me stand facing a corner just about every class. I only remember learning how to do one of those rolls from a standing position lmao

I totally was waiting for someone else to confirm my theory about broken datasets. I'm somebody who was raised in Pokrovsk, Ukraine (yes the one where the wars are happening) until 12 then picked up and thrown into Seattle, WA. First day in school I'm on the bus -- some dude comes up and slaps me on top of the head. Now, I'm being careful because it's a new country so I get up, walk towards the dude in question and very carefully slap him in a very similar manner, with surgically precise force. I don't consider myself a fighter or anything but until this point I was indoctrinated by everyone: parents, teachers, classmates, everybody -- if somebody attacks you you HAVE TO fight back. At the same time, I learned very unpleasant lessons of being unnecessarily cruel towards your enemy. So I slapped him back. Wasn't even thinking about not doing that. The next day everybody FREAKED OUT. But in a very unsettling way. The principal freaked out, the bus driver freaked out, everybody was talking about this it seemed like.
@LightPrevailsAllАй бұрын
Wait, as a russian I am so confused: what did they think you were supposed to do? When someone slaps you, you're supposed to do nothing? And what about the one who attacked you first, it's normal for them to do it but not to fight back with equal strength? That's so weird
@LightPrevailsAllАй бұрын
@@Arceve Thanks for the reply, it is still weird and makes no sense to me still but I guess that's the country mentality differences. I hope the one that hit someone gets in trouble for it at least!
@mackenziedesire7515Ай бұрын
@@LightPrevailsAll Oh, you're 100% right that it's weird and makes no sense- even with it being a country-wide mentality (at least in schools), I think most individual people would agree that it doesn't really make sense/isn't at all fair. You get in trouble for defending yourself, but you also aren't necessarily going to have the issue solved by _not_ defending yourself, either. It's... not really a good system. Ironically, although she was a teacher her whole career, my mom's ethos in parenting was, "your sister hit you? then hit her back!" lol

I know this is off topic but I just came from one of your AITA videos and I wanted to share mine where people would actually see and maybe respond. As a junior in highschool I lived in an area with trash public schools. There were some charter schools in the area that pulled a lot of the students with parental support and talent. Which only added to the public schools being trash. I attended the public school but my sister who was a freshman got into the preforming arts charter school as a trumpet player. My school was really old and the marching band was stuck in the past. They were doing the same 20+ year old routine that they did when my mom had competed against them as a silk captain in highschool. While most schools’ band fronts changed to color guard my school still had poms, twirlers, and silks. Even though it was outdated it was crazy popular, everyone wanted to be a band front. They didn’t even allow freshman to try out. It took a week of practice and then you auditioned. My friend and I didn’t make it as a sophomore but I made it as a junior. I was so excited to be a silk. My sister joined her schools marching band. Her school stole all the musically talented students in the school district. So her marching band sounded really good. Her band had color guard. No one wanted to join their color guard though and they had to beg people to sign up. On the other hand our band sounded pretty bad. Not only did they lack talent but the instruments were super old. Her marching band loved to rag on ours. I didn’t mind though, it wasn’t like she was coming after the silks and it was true, our band didn’t sound great. To be fair, when we played against their team we would make fun of their color guard. My sister caught wind of this and said I wasn’t allowed to make fun of them because they were a part of her band. So it was making fun of her team. I was like “ok but then you have to stop making fun of my band.” Her argument was that my band suuuucked but hers didn’t so I couldn’t make fun of her band. I was like you can decide if we are or aren’t allowed to make fun of each others schools. She thought she was right and would get our mom involved if I ever said anything about her band. My mom would defend her band and not say either of us were right. She would yell at me to drop it if I went on about how it wasn’t fair, sister loyalty should go both ways and she was being hypocritical. But even now I still think I was right, even though I could never get anyone to say it because they didn't want to take sides. Teasing their color guard only when we competed against them is a little different then the way she would talk about my school’s band. It was like a regular talking point for her and her band friends to make fun of my school’s band. She also asked if she could wear my band uniform to school on Halloween. I know she wanted to go as a “silk from my talentless dumb school’s band” which is making fun of my specific team, not just her rival band. I think that was uncool, like we are sisters and she knows how hard I worked to get on the team. Also that could’ve gotten me in trouble. This is old drama but I have had similar drama with her more recently that would be too long to type out (even longer than this). She is non-stop drama. I’m over it, it is just who she is. I’ve always wanted to share a AITA though and I just remembered this. Anyway thanks for reading. So AITA?

Nah from the way u described it, which sure could be “biased” to ur perspective, it’s pretty clear that there was an unfair advantage at her school and she used that to make fun.
