Michael Caine is legendary for taking pretty much any role for a Paycheck. Which is why my favorite quote from him was his answer to the question, "Have you ever seen Jaws: The Revenge?" He replied, "No, I have not. However, I have seen the house I bought with the money I was paid for that movie, and it's very nice."

That is exactly it. The explosion takes away the oxygen from a fire, smothers the flames and the shockwave pushes the oil away from the fire, so it doesn't catch again. Using explosions to put out the fire is actually how they do that. I'm pretty sure you need more protection than what Seagal was wearing though and I'm not sure where he placed the barrel of explosives would work that well.

This coming at the tail end of what Michael Caine himself called his "take any role that offered a good paycheck" period. Which he said winning a Golden Globe five years later "so I made a lot of crap. But I made a lot of money so I can afford to be picky." This is the film that tanked Seagal's career. He was riding high off the back of Under Siege (still a great film, largely because of everyone else in it), and would only do a sequel to that if he could direct a movie himself. On Deadly Ground was that film, and it ultimately tanked... as did Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (which is genuinely So Bad It's Good - hope you do it at some point, he wears a girdle and everything). Afterwards that double-bill of failure he was basically relegated to the Direct-to-DVD slump he's been stuck in ever since.

Please. There is no such thing as a good (much less "great") action movie. Especially anything this piece of sh*t had anything to do with. The Seagal of Under Siege is the Sensei Seagull who is now Putin's special envoy. Morons swinging their dicks around at lesser humans is not a recipe for a great movie. Stallone, Van Damme, Norris...all of them suck and always have. The only movie where a "martial artist" fights for justice that was ever any good was Billy Jack, and even then it was only because he was a modest, reluctant anti-hero who was defending the innocent from good ol' boys and dick-swingers. The entire genre is a rancid, narcissistic bowel movement.

After pressure from Warner Brothers and a disastrous preview screening, where audience members booed, laughed, and made obscene gestures for the entire sequence, Seagal cut the final scene down to about seven minutes.

Long-time subscriber, but just getting to this one. Great stuff. I saw an interview with a Warner Brothers executive where the executive talked about Seagal directing this movie. Specifically, he mentioned that the studio had an agreement with Seagal about budget overages. All approved overages, which happen on every film, would be covered by the studio. All un-approved overages would be taken out of Seagal's salary. By the end of the movie, Seagal owed the studio more than his salary (acting & directing). In exchange for the studio writing off his debt, he agreed to be in the first portion of Executive Decision (which explains why he was killed in the first 20 minutes). Glorious Hollywood story.

I can't help laughing every time I see this movie! I have a friend who is Lakota and this came on tv one night when we were hanging out. He gets enraged when he sees it and I have to ask what his problem with it is. He says just to watch the first bit. When it gets to that bar scene, he goes on a long rant about how that Native American guy is just a stereotypical drunk and it takes the white savior to come in and restore the honor of this people. He rants so hard on that drunk guy that it just put me in stitches! It pretty much ended with "Fuck Steven Seagal and fuck that guy!" I still crack up every time I see this flick or see it mentioned. I hope Seagal knows how highly he is thought of by at least one Lakota out there. If he's not sleeping good at night, it's because this guy is thinking about him.

Fun review as always! I saw this one the weekend it premiered in theaters. And yes, this was an A-list Warner Bros release. Originally titled "The Rainbow Warrior", Seagal apparently filmed plenty more environmental messaging for the movie -- but WB made him trim it down (luckily). Silly movie, but entertaining in the bad way. Best aspect is Ric Waite's robust widescreen cinematography -- which is strangely cropped in your review...

Now, I personally love it, cause we were cracking up at the native American mysticism, R.Lee Ermy's pep talk to his soldiers about how badass Seagal is and the slap fight sequences. It's really funny and at the time we thought he couldn't get worse than this...Ah, the sweet innocence of youth. Fire Down Below is like a sequel and is marginally better, but he's sped up in the fight sequences so it has a Benny Hill vibe. Also it must be said 'My Balls!' as Seagal hits a guy in the balls is one of the greatest dubbed in lines of all time. Look, I love this movie it's so stupid, pretentious and arrogant and Seagal is somehow against all odds a worse director than actor.
