This is the film that tanked Seagal's career. He was riding high off the back of Under Siege (still a great film, largely because of everyone else in it), and would only do a sequel to that if he could direct a movie himself. On Deadly Ground was that film, and it ultimately tanked... as did Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (which is genuinely So Bad It's Good - hope you do it at some point, he wears a girdle and everything). Afterwards that double-bill of failure he was basically relegated to the Direct-to-DVD slump he's been stuck in ever since.

Please. There is no such thing as a good (much less "great") action movie. Especially anything this piece of sh*t had anything to do with. The Seagal of Under Siege is the Sensei Seagull who is now Putin's special envoy. Morons swinging their dicks around at lesser humans is not a recipe for a great movie. Stallone, Van Damme, Norris...all of them suck and always have. The only movie where a "martial artist" fights for justice that was ever any good was Billy Jack, and even then it was only because he was a modest, reluctant anti-hero who was defending the innocent from good ol' boys and dick-swingers. The entire genre is a rancid, narcissistic bowel movement.

That is exactly it. The explosion takes away the oxygen from a fire, smothers the flames and the shockwave pushes the oil away from the fire, so it doesn't catch again. Using explosions to put out the fire is actually how they do that. Sven Ole Thorsen, who is in this, wrote about his expierience. Steven found out that Sven actually was an old Karate fighter and kept calling him out about it and challenging him. Sven finally got tired of this and accepted.. To no surprise Steven went flying. Steven got so mad about this that Sven's role became much shorter in the final movie. Now I only have Sven's words for this in his Biography.. but the more I see about Seagal the more i believe it.

Jean Claude Van Damme would wipe the floor with him. The two never got along and one time, Van Damme had enough of his BS talk and challenged him to a fight in a parking lot. He wound up waiting for an hour before realizing Seagull had ghosted him...

South Park did riff on this movie! They parodied Seagal's speech that he did at the end. Randy Marsh, dressed like Seagal in this movie, gave a speech at the end of the episode where there was no internet.

R Lee Ermey did his best and he had some great lines in this movie. But one good actor cannot help a POS movie. This is one of the worst, most unintentionally hilarious Seagull films ever!

Fun review as always! I saw this one the weekend it premiered in theaters. And yes, this was an A-list Warner Bros release. Originally titled "The Rainbow Warrior", Seagal apparently filmed plenty more environmental messaging for the movie -- but WB made him trim it down (luckily). Silly movie, but entertaining in the bad way. Best aspect is Ric Waite's robust widescreen cinematography -- which is strangely cropped in your review...

Long-time subscriber, but just getting to this one. Great stuff. I saw an interview with a Warner Brothers executive where the executive talked about Seagal directing this movie. Specifically, he mentioned that the studio had an agreement with Seagal about budget overages. All approved overages, which happen on every film, would be covered by the studio. All un-approved overages would be taken out of Seagal's salary. By the end of the movie, Seagal owed the studio more than his salary (acting & directing). In exchange for the studio writing off his debt, he agreed to be in the first portion of Executive Decision (which explains why he was killed in the first 20 minutes). Glorious Hollywood story.

This is the movie SeaFood thinks he should have got a Nobel Peace Prize and an Oscar for, because Al Gore did - hot a joke, and actual thing i heard him say in a recent interview. In the same interview, he said his son was a friend of Brandon Lee, and he and Bruce hung out together ... which means Seagal had his sone when he was about 10 and Bruce Lee knew him before he even went and trained in martial arts.

@@JasonBrant the funny thing is, if he spoke the truth, his life would be really cool - but he started lying before his film career even started, all the stuff about how he trained with masters who had already retired and died before he even went to japan, and about his brutal dojo - he didn't even have one, he worked at his father-in-law's place.
