This is my favorite score from John Williams. If this score isn’t an example of how much it can elevated a film, I don’t know what is. The music put this film over the top.
@metalheadjock35133 жыл бұрын
If anyone wonders why Spielberg is so heavily involved with the music, it's not only due to being the director, (with a lot of money at stake), it's also because he's a clarinetist. At one point, he actually brought his clarinet to sit and play WITH the orchestra. While recording the score to ET, Williams asked Spielberg to shut off the movie screen, just so that he, Williams, could close his eyes while condiciting and "feel the mind and being" of ET. The key of C-- for orchestra-- in which the main theme is played has a "fireplace" emotional warmth to it due to the fact that the cellos and double basses are rooting the chords on open strings, C and G. The violas have open strings C and G also, but an octave above th3 cellos. The violins have the warm, resonant open G. Key of C really makes this theme not only soar, but have tremdous emotional impact. The use of the Lydian F# is a gorgeous contrast to the aforementioned key of C....listen to 4 to 6 horns at the end of the entire movie blaring out this theme of loneliness. It's used also as piccolo solo in the soundtrack in the piccolo mid register, imitating the hollow, lonely sound of a toy flute.

This sounds like a lovely breakdown! I appreciate you adding the details to help us fans attempt to understand more of the process. Thank You!

Is that true, he plays the clarinet? That's funny lol. That's very Jewish of him
@SoundtrackFred2 жыл бұрын
@@aj.s... You can hear him play the clarinet in JAWS in the school-band and beach-band cues. Also it is said that he played in "March From 1941". While I am sure that's true, I am not sure if the take they recorded with him was used or if he just played along rehearsals. No idea if we really can hear him play in the original recordings, but the solo-flute/clarinet part sounds a little bit ragged, so it might be Spielberg, though.

@monx2 ай бұрын
In another video Williams says that he was having a hard time matching the cues in the end sequence, and Spielberg offered to recut the movie to fit the music. So then they turned off the screen and, IMO, made the ending scene much more powerful. the music really is at the heart of this movie.

JW is a classically trained pianist. He studied at Juilliard & Eastman School of Music in NY & studied privately with the legendary piano guru Rosina Lhévinne. He hit the keys at night after class at local jazz joints. Prior to that,, he was drafted in the US Air Force & played piano, conducted, and arranged tunes for the USAF Band. He's done some recordings with them again in the 2000's & is still considered "one of the guys" in the USAF Band. He played piano & helped orchestrate & arrange for many of the top film composers during the late 50's. This is a guy who has lived & breathed music his whole life. We're fortunate enough to be alive when he is & can enjoy his magnificent talents. The Maestro is almost 90 year's old & he's still scoring, writing, recording, & touring. His recent works have not diminished in quality IMO & he is undoubtedly the GOAT!

Jaws was stolen from Dvorak's 9th Symphony.
@thecluelesscomposer5 жыл бұрын
I love how everyone says that, it's so wrong tho. With 12 notes existing the chance two composers chose the two same notes is pretty high and tbh the development is totally different. Jaws creates a main theme from this, the Symphony uses it as an instrument to build tension and it never reappeares afterwards.

And Star Wars was “stolen” from Korngold, and if you people had ears and education you would know that The Great Migration from Land Before Time was “stolen” from Shostakovich (try to find the exact symphony/movement, I bet you can’t) but this is how classical music, especially cinematic music is made. Themes are borrowed from and expanded upon.
