I really like that they draw out Pearl feeling bad and Garnet struggling to forgive her. It's very true to life. People don't just apologize and immediately get forgiven all the time. And fusion is such an intimate and personal thing to Garnet, and lying about it was a major violation.

[No Spoilers To This Point] Fun fact about Opal (fusion of Pearl and Amethyst). You'd think she'd be constantly at war with herself, but the thing is that they can only form Opal when they have a common goal. Opal is single-mindedly determined, with Amethyst's brutal ability to throw herself full force into something and Pearl's attention to detail and calculatory mind. Opal cares about nothing other than what her current purpose is, reflecting both Pearl and Amethyst's deep desire to have a sense of duty. Unfortunately this hyperfixation can lead to her neglecting other responsibilities and falling apart in panic when she realizes she failed to complete the WHOLE task. Such as being focused with blinding intensity on getting Steven home safe, so much so that she totally forgot to get the Heaven Beatle.

I thought it was more so rhetoric gems desire to impress steven and feel cool in his eyes. This is why amethyst said "u got carried away with all those fancy backflips". I think this is more heavily implied in the episode "know your fusion" and is the reason sardonyx takes over the show (garnet and pearl get carried away showing off" but, this could all be the influence of pearl

Amethyst takes a lot of inspiration from Greg actually, a big one is her hair. One of the first things she tells him is "I love your hair" when Greg is first meeting the gems, and now her hair greatly resembles his from when he was younger. Star shapes are also a big thing with the Crystal Gems as well.

I absolutely agree that Peal should’ve just gone up to Garnet and had a straight up apology, giving her space and time. It’s so fascinating to see how different people operate because of their experiences. I think because Pearl was in service of Rose for so long that she thinks the best way to earn anything is by doing things and that will make it better. But Garnet needs things more up front. This is the kind of communication issue I see with people in real life where their clashing personalities can make it hard to resolve things.

[LIGHT SPOILERS] EXACTLY, not only that but her entire purpose is to *serve* as a pearl, and even with rose they still had a goal to reach making it easy for her to just focus on whatever she needed to do- so even though rose wanted her to become her own gem/person or to think for herself more, it obviously wasn't an easy thing for pearl to wrap her head around, it's nice how you can rewatch the series and catch a bunch of details like this in hindsight. (I also think rose isn't as straightforward as garnet either imo which changes the dynamic alot)

As a huge Pearl stan myself I must go on the record and say that if certain commenters are refusing to acknowledge her trash fuckup status they're missing the point. The fact that she's such a disaster of a person is what makes her compelling! I don't think I'd be nearly as interested in her character if she wasn't constantly doing everything wrong. Woah. I think this is the first time Pearl (and the show) refers to herself as "*a* Pearl"? I never noticed that. I may have said this in another comment, in another reaction, but I think is interesting how Pearl and Amethyst both have self-worth issues but approach them differently. Amethyst copes by constantly joking in order to avoid the issue, while Pearl is an overachiever that tries to be perfect to make up for it, just how she tries to make up for her mistake by catching Peridot. Garnet doesn't have the same self worth issues, which is probably why they both gravitate towards her to find an answer or a way to lift themselves up. This, as seen with Pearl, can mean they're using Garnet if things go towards the worst case scenario, so I'm glad this is the beginning of Pearl learning that she has to be strong for herself by herself too in order to be her equal as she wishes.

well, there are still SPOILERS: Pebbles, and pearls are a basically status symbols, as only gems of certain ranks can have one. so technically, pearls can have authority, based on the gem they are serving, like if they are acting as the secretary of a high ranking gem, they can issue orders to gems way lower than that. for example, if jasper had a pearl, that pearl might be able to order Rubies around, on jaspers behalf. although they are doomed to always being with a gem of higher rank, so they can never be the highest on whatever station or outpost they are.

Rose Quartz had the star symbol for the Crystal Gems from the very beginning of the rebellion (the holographic recording in Rose's Scabbard). It's just by coincidence that Greg "Mr. Universe" thousands of years later adopted a star as his space-based act's logo, which is now worn by Steven through the shirts left over from Greg's music career.

yeah garnet just said that she distracted everyone, not necessarily endangered anyone. I think the only time Pearl accidentally endangers anyone is the spaceship episode (and even then, steven has his bubble...) she typically errs on the other side.

In this situation loosing time could result in putting everybody in danger. Since they don't know that Peridot is just running in circles with nothing to do, they might think that every moment wasted is giving her more time to plan either an attack or a way to get to contact homeworld, thus bringing more powerful gems to earth. So, both statements are correct, one is more small picture, the other one is more big picture.

It sucks that fans are being so awful to you guys about Pearl. I hope it's not taking away from your enjoyment of the show too much, but I get how it can sour the experience. I think there's a lot of fans who were young and beginning to realize their queer identity who found a safe place in SU, and many who identified with Pearl because of her love for Rose, and perceived her as a queer character who was "jilted" for a heterosexual relationship - which isn't really the point of Pearl, Rose, or Greg's history, but a lot of people projected their real-life experience onto that. I think because they were feeling that hurt IRL they viewed Pearl only through the lens of a victim rather than an individual responsible for her own choices no matter the circumstance. It's understandable for an adolescent to feel that way - but absolutely NOT acceptable for adults to threaten other adults over. And viewing her simplistically as "never in the wrong" does no justice to the skilled writing of her character arc, either. Just some thoughts from a Pearl-critical queer fan who loves you guys. I appreciate y'all. Hope you stay with this series.

One of the things I love about this show is that everyone has a flaw. And it's not a flaw that can be easily overlooked. They actually struggle and it hinders their development, it makes them feel so much more like people. So yes, the characters do messed up things sometimes. It's understandable, but doesn't mean it's excusable. You shouldn't feel pressure to like a character, just because they have good qualities and learn in the future. I haven't seen the comments, but anyone mindlessly defending every action they take honestly is missing a key message of the show.

Fusion is an intimate act. For Garnet, it’s an even bigger deal. It was dangerous and manipulative thing for Pearl to do and I’m glad they didn’t have it brushed over. Pearl even holds his inability to fuse over Greg in a flashback as though it devalues the relationship because for Gems it is important.

Having seen all the episodes, I definitely like Pearl, but she was very unlikeable for me for a while especially after the episode with her tricking Garnet. Even though I’m a fan of Pearl now, I can say you guys are totally justified for criticizing Pearl for what she did. The show didn’t even redeem her right away cause they wanted to emphasize what she did wasn’t ok. Even the show agreed that she shouldn’t be forgiven right away and that’s why Garnet not forgiving her was so drawn out.

I really hope that I don't seem unreasonable but during the whole Pearl vs. Amethyst debate (despite them both being perfectly lovable characters to enjoy) what Amethyst did is still more unsettling. The key is intent of actions. This last episode, Pearl (heck even Amethyst) made it clear that they did not think Pearl's actions could affect Garnet so deeply. They held her on a pedestal. What Pearl did was irresponsible, but she didn't even think about how it affected others (still horrible yes). When Amethyst turned into Rose, despite the lesser stakes, it was more visceral. Amethyst was hurting and she responded by doing something she Knew would hurt Greg, because she had did it before. It was pure malice, not a misguided missile like Pearl's horrible self centered attempt at self esteem. Amethyst hurt she make you hurt. Another big difference is that Greg is a lot quicker to forgive after someone willingly and aggressively pressed a trauma button. Amethyst could not pull that same stunt off with Garnet.... actually maybe she is more wise than Pearl because she didn't toe that line yet. I am sorry people were being stupid about their bias opinions with you and it leaves less chances for interesting character discussions.

Im glad y’all call out pearl while watching this series because she was honestly so scummy for the things she’s done. She’s selfish and moody to the point she puts her “son” in danger constantly. She also exposes Steven to her emotional outbursts regularly even knowing better, comparing her to amethyst in that sense is a stretch because amethyst is literally younger than pearl by thousands of years. I love pearl but I don’t excuse the crap she throws onto Steven and the rest of the team just because she was in love with someone. She can grieve for as long as she needs of course but she didn’t do it healthily. Truthfully pearl is an incredibly complex character that is still somehow relatable! She’s beautifully written and I admire her character a lot for that! I’ve never seen a character like her before so I encourage seeing more of her type in the future just as long as there’s growth and understanding happening. But as for pearl I’d be her good friend but I’d ask her to NEVER speak of her love life with me lmfaoo.

The whole thing with Pearl demonstrated that no one is infallible. Even the ones you believe to do no wrong, can do wrong and make mistakes. And forgiveness isn't easy. That's the other lesson here. Just saying you forgive someone won't make everything right. Both parties have to work through their problems together. It's not as easy as saying "I'm sorry" and then "that's okay" and act like nothing happened. And I loved how Steven conjured his shield three times. He was on top of it in this one!

Considering the average delay between recording a video and posting it for most youtubers, you may already have realized/remembered this, but: Remember that in the episode "Jailbreak"(season 1 finale), Peridot, Jasper, and Lapis came to Earth right up to the Crystal Gem's doorstep. They didn't need to track anything with the gem communication tower. So in that regard Pearl wasn't really putting the Earth at risk when she deceived Garnet(at least not any more risk than it was *already* in). The deception was *purely* an interpersonal betrayal.

Mysterious transmissions from Earth could absolutely have drawn unwanted attention from Homeworld. Plus as Garnet points out in that episode, Pearl's stunt stole time that could have been spent actually trying to find Peridot. So it wasn't a purely interpersonal problem.

I finally caught up with this reaction series and I’m really glad you guys are willing to point out Pearl’s flaws and attitude. When I first watched this, I found her way of handling conflict very immature, and it felt like the fan base attacked me for not liking Pearl. But I love Pearl. When I got the backstory I understood her more; the complexity of her character is interesting. However I wasn’t going to ignore that she makes hurtful decisions to the rest of the cast. You can like a character without supporting and justifying every decision they make.

The majority of it's great. I'm new to the fandom and haven't come across any of the toxicity everyone talks about. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I totally believe it does but I think there's a lot of good in the fandom that's overlooked because of the few people that take things way too far.

Exactly. Like when the show was new, i honestly didn't liked pearl that much and her obsession with rose always made me feel a bit uncomfortable. But eventually learning more about her, especially in season 5 made me understand her a bit more. That's what SortaStupid have been feeling about pearl lately too, and i find it so damn immature that some pearl fans not only get mad at the guys but also THREATENING them. Like don't they understand that the guys still don't know everything about pearl?? That is just horrible. The guys have every right to criticize pearl for the stunt she pulled with garnet. And little by little they will eventually understand her a bit more. So those certain pearl fans should just back off and let the guys enjoy the show.

I SUCK at names so i apologize, but I have watched this entire series of you guys watching the show. Lmao Top Left has Garnet energy. Top Right is def Garnet energy. H-Man def gives off Connie or Pearl just because of the calmness. Bottom Left is 100% Steven because the curiosity and bubbly personality is def there.

Idk if anyone else noticed, but i think it's a cool detail, ever since we found out Garnet was a fusion, her glasses went from 2 shades of orange to red and blue, and it's implied that depending on which color takes up most of the glasses at any given time, its either Ruby or Sapphire doing the talking. For example, when Garnet told Pearl that she lied and cant forgive her, the glasses are primarily red, meaning it was Ruby who was saying it, plus it was a more aggressive thing to say, but then the next scene when she talks about learning of consequences, the glasses are mainly blue and it was a more intellectual statement, so it was Sapphire

In the whole scope of criticism towards Pearl and Amethyst are truly acceptable. ALL the gems are truly complex and complicated/troubled characters to some degree. Amethyst is still a teen/young adult in gem terms and is figuring herself out and screws up. Pearl is as you said a perfectionist and she does a lot that seems like suffocating/or overbearing to viewers. She for sure has her reasons that and you will learn going forward in later episodes. But at this point in time no one knew those reasons, other than she had a long and clearly love fueled attachment to Rose.

yah, the fact that you guys don't like Pearl is perfectly legitimate. I've seen the whole series, and am a bit of a fan of all the characters, but I also have context you haven't gotten to yet. That said, disliking a character is absolutely fine, don't mind the hate. Sadly, as someone who was there while the show was airing, the fandom has its elements that are just hot garbage. Bear in mind that when one of the artists drew fanart of a certain ship, SHE got death threats and accusations of queer-baiting, despite the fact that she herself was queer. The SU fandom isn't great, and I actively avoid interacting with major parts of most fandoms because of what I saw and went through during the show's run.
