I feel like a lot of people forget Lapis intentionally chose to fuse with Jasper in orders to dominate her and keep her under the water. In that episode she literally talks about how it’s her turn to keep someone prisoner after all the time being captured. Jasper still has faults in the dynamic but it really is a mix of toxicity. Going as far as her wanting Lapis to hurt her by saying “I’m the only one who can take your full power.” Jasper liked getting oppressed and Lapis felt a since of catharsis letting all her anger out on someone and I think that’s a very interesting angle to portray.

My favorite part of the message from the Lapis and Jasper episode was, that in their fusion/relationship they both were very toxic and hurt each other, but while Lapis still missed it emotionally she knew it was bad and said no to going back. That's the most powerful thing you can do IMO - whether you are a victim or in a mutually toxic bad relationship or even an abuser, the situation changes what your next steps should be but the first step is to realize that it needs to end and then to stick with that conviction (and find people/resources who support you in sticking to it)

The figure Centipeetle (at this point forward referred to as Centipeetle Captain) was saluting isn't Yellow Diamond, but a Gem who as a character is not canonical to SU but is a major character in the spinoff games. Her name is Hessonite and she's voiced by actress Christine Baranski. Actually, Hessonite could be considered canonical to SU since at one point her name will be mentioned in the series. Recall Lapis's flashback at the Galaxy Warp in Same Old World. Just like in Centipeetle's account, the Homeworld loyalists still on Earth were in panic mode trying to get off planet shortly before some kind of "nuke flash". Greg shouldn't be responsible for the cost of the yacht, a boat like that for charter would be covered by insurance, so unless there was a clause that specified "No Gems allowed" or it could be proved that the sinking was caused by Greg operating the boat negligently, the insurance would cover the loss. Now, Greg WOULD be responsible for the dock damage caused by forgetting to cast off the line. There are five seasons of SU; then comes the movie, followed by Steven Universe Future.

Lapis and Jasper sparked a LOT of discourse in the fandom because the relationship isnt clear who was exactly toxic and abusive and this episode didnt sit right with a lot of us. It seemed like they wanted to go with the stereotypical picture of abuse ( big muscular aggressive person vs the small dainty person) but then they made it more complicated by saying lapis liked it. the issue is kids mostly understand stuff in a simplistic light so if you want to explain the nuances to them then you have to do it thoroughly so while we were kids we wanted to side with lapis bc she was portrayed as weaker but when she saids she liked it, but then is put in this light as if being in the right to leave jasper when she was the one who trapped both of them at the bottom of the ocean, it became VERY confusing. This could have been a great moment if the show gave us extra context to both of their backstories if they knew each other at some point bc a lot of the fandom filled in the gaps with theories. Also jasper is wasted potential because she is a war veteran of homeworld and could have given us more plot and more of her backstory so you will only see her a few times. This plot is one of my least favorites and imo doesnt portray a toxic relationship well when these characters are only seen for a few episodes.

i wonder if Babish has reproduced the pizza/burritto/chip/roll? I have loved Bismuth from the first time i saw her, and because i saw the later episodes first, then went back to watch the earlier ones, i got a real buzz the first time we see the tree, and you can see what looked like Bismuth's bubbled gem (we wouldn't have known at the time if watched in order)....if you look up what bismuth looks like in real life, that is what the gem or mineral looks like, a rainbow sheen that forms in square, rectangular or square spiral descending forms naturally....you don't expect a mineral or metal to form in straight lines and natural, straight line bends i also love her voice, it is Crazy Eyes from Orange is the New Black my favourite part is when we first see her, they reveal her name, and the episode title right when the audience is asking "who is that?"

It's really sad how many people see Lapis as the abuser, or AN abuser, in her relationship with Jasper. As someone trained in clinical psychology, Steven Universe was really just as blatant as they could be--Jasper checks all the main boxes of an abuser clearly, and Lapis checks absolutely none of them. Jasper doesn't have Stockholm syndrome. Anyone who thinks that should really do some research on what the condition actually means. And yes, Lapis is more powerful, but that has zero impact on the direction of the abuse. Lapis doesn't manipulate Jasper's emotions. Jasper is the one with more emotional control over their relationship, and Lapis suffers from it. Everything in the alone at sea episode is a textbook example of abuser and victim--I've seen many, many similar conversations irl. Jasper pretends to be the victim, stating that she's changed and that she needs Lapis, etc etc etc. That's common abuser behavior. What I've realized after seeing many people's reactions to this episode is that most people just don't understand manipulation. They trust that Jasper is as weak as she pretends to be. I can sorta understand the confusion--yes, Lapis physically held Jasper in place and unleashed her negative emotions onto Jasper. She was defending Steven from a monster, holding her back for his protection. And, in the process, she used her own negative emotions as fuel, harming Jasper in the process. This could be considered a form of abuse, definitely. But in regards to the relationship dynamic between Lapis and Jasper, emotionally speaking, Lapis is the victim, and Jasper is the abuser. They aren't abusing each other--it's one-sided. For those not wanting to do heavy research on the subject but curious about how to tell an abuser from a victim, there are plenty of very simple signs that usually work. In the episode, Lapis feels like a monster for holding Jasper down, recognizing that it was a bad relationship, but feeling like she may be in the wrong. That's classic victim behavior--abusers shift the blame, but are, in MOST cases, unable to express any shame outwardly. They can act shameful as a manipulation tactic, but Lapis wasn't trying to manipulate Steven onto being on her side--she was just being honest. An abuser wouldn't be able to do that the vast majority of the time. A well known sign nowadays is gaslighting, one of many manipulation tactics abusers love. Jasper gaslights Lapis, lies about changing for the better, uses flattery, promises things will be different, separates Lapis from her ally, puts herself in a demeaning position to make Lapis feel stronger, acts like a victim, (but doesnt exhibit any signs if being one) etc. One thing to remember is that manipulation tactics manifest in abusers AND victims. Abusers use these tactics to manipulate their victims, and victims use these tactics to manipulate themselves, because that's what they were taught by the abusers to do. Most victims can't leave their toxic relationships because of these messages like "things will be different now," etc etc. A much better sign is their willingness to accept other's agency. If you tell an abuser "no," things are about to be bad. An abuser can never accept when someone else defies their authority, and will always have a severe negative emotional reaction. They're abusive in the first place because they have an emotional need for control. Telling them no defies that control. This is probably the best sign of an abuser. Lapis is struggling with feelings of wanting to be malachite again, but isn't pushing those feelings onto Jasper. Jasper telling her she doesn't want to go back wouldn't cause Lapis to lash out in anger. She respects Jasper's agency. Jasper, on the other hand, grows angry when Lapis defies her, forgetting the act and taking her anger out on Steven. So, yeah. Lapis isn't an abuser. It makes me really sad to see people think of her as one, not because I don't understand the confusion, and not because they're misunderstanding the show, but because it means they probably aren't equipped to tell the difference in real life, either. I wish some form of clinical psych from mandatory in schools--it's some of the most important stuff to be educated on in regards to future mental health. Don't get into abusive relationships, people. And if you're in one, I sincerely hope you find a way out someday. You absolutely can, even if it doesn't feel possible :)

Thanks for writing this, this is actually a really good description of Lapis and Jasper. I personally always pityed Jasper, but that was probably just me taking what she said as genuine. Especially that Stockholm Syndrome bit, I literally commented that Jasper reminded me of that. But yeah after reading what you wrote, Jasper was the abuser.
@azeTrom17 Жыл бұрын
@@fanaticalistic Yeah, and to be clear I'm not saying Jasper didn't suffer. Abusers do what they do because of their own pain. Also, sorry about the random essay lol I just got tired of seeing the same (understandably) confused comment everywhere online when this stuff is actually super important irl.

I agree with this. I see in the comment section of every reaction to this episode the same thing “lapis is the abuser” “Jasper was forced into fusion” . I’m glad that someone sees what I am thinking.

@@SADIE_Maybe_SADISTIC There's a video out there calling out Lapis for being a horrible person, (gem?) so that's where everyone got the idea. It straight up misrepresented serious mental health issues--I finished it but felt sick to my stomach. I don't recommend it lol the person making the video really needs to take a psych class

I don't think lapis is an "abuser" but I think the idea is that lapis "abused" Jasper. Jasper abused Lapis much more so, but when people say Lapis is an abuser I don't think they say so in a clinical sense, but in a "They abused someone so they're an abuser" like someone that stole something is a thief. Then again you get into an argument of definitions, which isn't even arguing the same point anymore. In my opinion, Lapis abused Jasper, and Jasper abused Lapis. And saying Lapis is the victim and Jasper is the abuser, while again clinically true, paints a picture of a black and white relationship when in reality neither of them did the right thing in situations they were presented with.
