Fun gemology fact: The crystal structures of white and pink diamonds are identical, with the pink coloration arising from intense pressure of the structure. It's why she "blushes" pink. She puts the most amount of pressure on herself. My personal headcanon is that White wanted to make another diamond like herself, but put too much pressure into the process, compressing Pink into being "the littlest diamond" who somehow has all this extra power.

@@Kyss111 Exactly! It is a metaphor rather than an actual guide on how to deal with dictators but it is rather cleverly shown. If the majority of their subjects think they're in the right, slowly dismantling the system and negotiating with peace is far more effective than violence.

Hell yassss! When I watched it was beautiful it was literaly what Steven Universe is about! Team maybe a little rush but it was marvelous for the time they have to out it together. And then I saw a lot o People get mad with the ending because they didn't have this great massive super fight defeat the main villian and save the universe, steven universe isn' t about that, is about love,self awarnes, disco ver new things, love yourself, it's like the first season when Steven though they were faghting with evil monster and later he find out they weren't monster, they were gems like them. Obviosly the gems didn't want to fight them but they have to, the same here at the ending, he didn't want to fight the diamonds, not fight White, but he have to, but no with punch, with words and a lot of people didn't understand that.

I know there was a lot of criticism lobbed at this finale for being rushed, for the diamonds not getting enough comeuppance, or any, for White Diamond not getting enough screentime, and not every plot thread being followed through with. but honestly? I liked it. They did what they could with the time they had, and most importantly: Steven finally has catharsis. His whole life he's been compared to his mom, he's been told he IS his mom, he's been struggling with living up to her when she literally killed herself to have him, and he's been struggling to understand if she's really gone or if he's just keeping her trapped. But now he finally has his answer. He's Steven. and he's always been Steven.

Also the Diamonds do get comeuppance. It's called restorative justice. Rather than just dying or something, they now have to spend the rest of eternity (yes, eternity because they are immortal, unless they get assassinated they will be here until the heat death of the universe) making up for ever evil action they did. Their redemption arcs aren't rushed, they just aren't finished, because that's the point. They have to keep making up for everything they did and helping every still living person that they hurt for the rest of the universe's existence. People are just too focused on revenge to understand that retributive justice is never more just than restorative justice. Retribution puts the focus on the victimizer, while restoration puts the focus on the victim, where it should be.

Unfortunately the message doesn't work due to flawed writing. The message of the show in a nutshell is that people should talk and accept others. It's about avoiding conflict and loving one another. That is the final message that Steven Universe has staked EVERYTHING on. Acceptance and talking things out. It's why we don't get a giant battle to bubble White Diamond because that would go against the big theme. And the show decided that preserving family is something they SUDDENLY care about. Did the writers forget about the episode about Marty who was Sour Cream's awful father? If you look at the entire story with all 5 seasons, this idea about communication and talking things out is bullshit because no one actually communicates in this show. Steven is the ONLY person that communicates, and unless it's facilitated by him, it doesn't happen between any of the other characters. So as much as it wants this grand aesop, its dependence on Steven makes the message feel incredibly hollow. The Diamonds don't talk to one another about their problems. Okay, they're the villains. This is the lesson they need to learn. Except the Crystal Gems are NO BETTER. We NEVER see Pearl talk to Amethyst about losing Rose. We NEVER see Garnet speak to Greg about struggling to raise Steven or being a bad parent. They don't communicate at the beginning of the show, and they don't communicate at the end. And while they reach a much better place at the story's conclusion working out their own personal issues, they do that INTERNALLY without input from anyone that isn't Steven. When the CG are fighting the Diamonds in "Reunited", we get the most obvious scene of this show's failure. What should've happened is that they look to EACH OTHER to find their strength rather than having to be REMINDED by Steven of what they're supposed to be. This show is built around Steven, and this is easily its greatest failing. Not the Diamonds' redemption. Not Pearl getting ruined by the Pink Diamond reveal. Not Bismuth getting bubbled. It's botching its own thesis because the groundwork for the argument they are making is flawed because rather than fostering it among many characters who improve their lives by leaning on one another, it made Steven the crutch that EVERYONE uses. Also, you can't reason with genocidal tyrants. No amount of restitution can ever pull the Diamonds out of villainhood. They are not misunderstood people waiting to be friends like SU wants you to think.

Did they want him to be like original Pink diamond or Rose and physically fight every diamond and make them submit? I guess I understood where people were coming from but I also don't understand how nobody can conceptualize that Steven literally COULDN'T kill all three of the diamonds? And if he did, he would have started another galactic war with all the homeworld gems that were still loyal to them? Like he literally has to learn to work with them because there isn't a reality where he can just get rid of them and everything is suddenly sunshine and rainbows for the entire galactic empire of citizens they'd leave behind. Aside from the obvious fact that the diamonds are an analogy for an abusive family, and it's about Steven helping them try to come to terms with that and start to heal each other.... He didn't have a way to shatter the diamonds going into the fight. So why did people think he would suddenly pull out some sort of gambit?

For the meaning of the show about family dynamics the ending make total sense it's just weird if you translate their galactic dictature into reel world political system as you can't fight a didacture or even the patriarcal system for exemple just by hoping that someday the oppressors will understand you since it's not compatible with their owns interest and you could even say that steven strategy doesn't work with parents that doesn't want to listen like the ones the last song suggest ("i just want you to know you could know me if you change your mind")

the way Steven shouts "SHE’S GONE!" is the result of all the trauma, anger, and pressure that the gems put on Steven with living up to Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz, with how every homeworld gem only seeing Steven as his mother this is the bottle exploding i really like the reunion of Lars and Sadie, they are one of the first characters Rebecca Sugar made since they showed up on the pilot pitch episode so seeing these two with both having hair color change is phenomenal

Preach! There was no "victory" to be had in this situation that wasn't talking with the Diamonds and getting them to acknowledge they needed to change. Even if Steven had miraculously been able to bubble or shatter the Diamonds- bubbling of which would require poofing them, and the closest we actually see to that happening was Yellow trying to poof Blue and it took long enough Steven was able to stop it in progress, which means the other Diamonds could do the same, and the other option of which would require the Breaking Point, which was not only destroyed but has no guarantee to actually work on a Diamond- we literally see in that shot after Steven tells White to leave her head that reinforcements were already there to check on the situation. Given how gem society already reacted to the "shattering" of Pink, there'd be a far worse reaction to White, Yellow, and Blue being taken out of the equation, and the Crystal Gems would've been hopelessly outnumbered. Plus bubbling and/or shattering the Diamonds defeated the ENTIRE purpose of going to Homeworld in the first place, given you need all four Diamonds to heal corrupted gems. There's literally no scenario outside of what did happen that wouldn't have resulted in even worse problems

just looking at jasper is enough, the amount of hate and frustration she had and she was a single gem, how many "jaspers" with mortal hatred of rose quartz are there in homeworld? there is a planet literally built on the basis of soldiers, even if pink really was the strongest in terms of powers, like a diamond and 7 gems could beat an entire planet+ 3 diamonds, just one aquamarine was enough to defeat the crystal gems, the number of gems with special abilities in homeworld must be stratospheric In short, it was a defeat by means of fighting

If you actually pay attention and think about it, white diamond being that easily persuaded at the end actually makes sense. She was supposed to be perfect but when she turned off colored the most realistic response would be either sevear denial or being willing to listen because now everything she knew was wrong and she doesn't know how to handle it. I think some people were just mad because it wasn't the first response instead.

I only just found the show and I still think the ending was awesome. The people criticising it are just missing the point. I can see how they'd interpret it like that but it's clearly not how it's intended and the messages they do convey are beautiful and that can't be overshadowed by some misinterpretation.

I love this end and really hated the fact that CN made them rush it cause it was obvious that the diamonds still had more to them to be developed. White in particular had more to her than just "I have to make everything perfect"

Okay, so what happened is this: Steven is a fusion of his human half and his gem half, and they both need each other to function. Human Steven needs Gem Steven to live, to have energy and hold himself together, while Gem Steven needs Human Steven to control his powers and emotions, and act like a human being instead of like a robot. They're the only human and gem who are able to fuse, because they're halves of each other, and that's why Steven can fuse with Connie too, because of his human half. What White thought it would happen, was that Pink was going to appear and that she was going to prove that Steven was just another one of Pink's foolish whims. Also, white was created to be pure perfection, we still don't know who did it, but whoever created the diamonds inforced in whites mind that she is perfect, and that all gems are a part of her. When she's shown irrefutable doubt that she's absolutely wrong, her whole world is shattered and she's presented with reality.

Acording to the wiki: "The Diamonds were to be eternally considered the most perfect, powerful and absolutely flawless Gems by virtually all of their peers and it can be assumed this was how they rose to power over the entirety of their species, using the influence they gathered to collectively cull a following of any "lesser" Gems. When the Great Diamond Authority officially formed, White Diamond established laws and rules to govern and essentially shape Gem society to her own design, an influence that lasted for untold eons all the way to the present." So my guess is: Gemworld naturally generated this "gem" species, eventually forming a single White Diamond, Blue and Yellow Diamond after that, and lastly Pink Diamond. And the rest is history

*Allow me explain the weird circumstances. (SPOILER FREE EXPLANATION)* A regular Steven Universe season has an episode pickup of 25/26, with the exception of season 1 since it consisted of 2 pickups. During the entire show's lifespan Cartoon Network had been trying to sabotage Steven Universe due to its themes, but the show was too strong and brought them too much money, until season 5's production; Rebecca Sugar (The creator) had been trying to do a Ruby and Sapphire marriage since season 3, but had to go through hell and back, specially since same-sex marriage was still illegal in the US, but when it turned legal, Rebecca put her foot down demanding that season 5 had the marriage, they agreed, and cancelled the show, making the 23rd/24th episode of Steven Universe "Reunited" the last of the season and the series, due to the imminent budget cuts the show would receive from international homophobic countries. But Rebecca Sugar demanded the 5/8 extra episodes to conclude the series and if she was lucky, a movie finale, she unexpectedly got both, the episodes became part of the "Diamond Days" event, and concluded the original series, and they had the movie to continue whatever narrative they desired, but Cartoon Network has a rule, *THEY WILL NOT HAVE A MOVIE UNLESS ITS TO PROMOTE MORE SHOW,* so they greenlit Steven Universe Future, a 20 episode limited epilogue series. So yah, they cancelled the fucking show, struggled to give them another 5 episodes but had no trouble giving them a movie and 20 more eps, this world is so weird

Steven's identity crisis really hit home for young queer people (myself included) - and especially trans and non-binary people. Steven knew who he was inside, but being surrounded by guardians like the Diamonds who are so powerful and all-knowing, can instill so much doubt. "You do not look like this, you do not sound like this, you're just acting like a child." "I only want you to be yourself. If you can't do that, I'll do it for you." Constantly being told by them that how he identified, how he looked, how he behaved was wrong or childish or just not possible. Coupled with being not quite human and not quite gem, you could see hints of his inner turmoil throughout the show, but especially in the final few episodes. The whole show focused on Steven's journey of self-discovery. And this finale brought me to tears with pride that Steven finally knows for certain who he is. "I'm me. I've always been me."

People who either haven't watched this show or haven't seen it in a long time have this misconception that Steven solves all his problems with crying and paragraph long speeches about why you should stop being evil, and how easily he forgave the diamonds. But if you rewatch the last few episodes, the movie, and future you'll realize how wrong that is, he'll give you a chance to stop but he's not gonna throw paragraph speeches and cry the entire time, he's gonna throw hands

A vast majority of his encounters with gems do actually result in fights. He's had a really poor talk streak with Jasper, Aquamarine, and Eyeball as example; only getting through to Jasper through violence, and Aquamarine and Eyeball actually still hate Steven even though he's kicked their asses a few times. Malachite couldn't be talked down, the shard monsters weren't negotiable, it took Steven getting knocked unconscious in Reunited to get through to Yellow and Blue, he did fight every single Diamond in Change Your Mind (of which talking failed the most miserably with White, who only actually listened after Gem Steven quite literally physically proved to her that Pink was gone). Not to mention the corrupted gems (where only Centipeetdle was reasonable), Steven and the Stevens (while that did get resolved through talking somewhat, there was that massive Steven fight and it got followed by massive Steven disintegrations), talking went very poorly in The Return which lead to them all being imprisoned in Jailbreak, talking went very poorly in Are You My Dad? and only worked after being backed into a corner in I Am My Mom, so on and so forth. While Steven wants to default to talking things out, pretty much no gem actually humors him on it unless they don't have a choice (like when Peridot got backed into a corner in Catch and Release), there's a better offer (I Am My Mom to put "Rose Quartz" on trial), or until he's had enough talking and fighting with the gem to get through to them (Spinel being a great example, starting out fighting, becoming amiable upon recovering her memories, going back to fighting upon misinterpreting the situation, moving back to being reasoned with after Steven finally got through to her). If I'm not mistaken he's gotten into a fight with almost every single new gem he meets either from the very beginning (Jasper, the Rubies, Spinel, Emerald and her armada) or after a bit of talking gone wrong (Blue, Yellow, White, Lapis, Peridot, Bismuth, the Lapises in Future) outside of the Off Colors (who only didn't fight because the Rutiles saw them hiding from the scanners), the newly freed corrupted gems (because most of them were former Crystal Gems already amenable to humans and those who weren't saw the Diamonds there and didn't push it), Holly Blue and the Amethysts (because they were performing a heist and that would've defeated the purpose of sneaking in to free Greg), the Rose Quartzes (because the situation was different in Future), the Pearls (Yellow and Blue Pearl weren't meant to fight nor were ever in a position where they would've, Volleyball had no reason to fight in Future), and the Zircons (because they were facilitating "Rose Quartz's" criminal trial). It's kind of baffling SU has a reputation for resolving problems exclusively through talking when talking actually makes half the SU and SUF problems worse, and there's a fight every episode to every other episode that's gem-centric

I think Future gave the series a great rounded ending. It provided answers to gaps in the lore and showed the aftermath of a child hero- which I've literally never seen done before. Everything came full circle. Yes, some episodes are silly and yes it's not the same- but was it ever advertised to be 100% serious and the exact same series- no! It's an epilogue, and as much as I understand the hate behind certain episodes they provide more info about minor characters and say goodbye to those we love. It was needed, imo.

Im so glad they understand the show enough to see why an epic battle with White was never going to be the outcome. Even if it was quick, White was a simple character to start and intended to be so, so as soon as Steven just by existing is able to give her proof that she’s wrong and imperfect when her whole worldview is based on her being perfect, everything changes. She and the diamonds weren’t “redeemed” at the end, they just became open to change and how they’ve been wrong. They can begin to become better people. And they’re moreso meant to be a metaphor for a broken toxic family than be read literally as an evil big bad dictatorship with how they treat each other and other gems.Steven universe the show is all about healing and relationships and individualism (how you’re more than a cog in a machine and you’re unique and important on your own), and Steven the character brings that by being himself, someone different. It’s a huge queer allegory with Steven’s character, but it can represent anyone different who doesn’t fit the mold who has the ability to bring about change for the better.

Honestly the Steven Universe fandom was super toxic back when it was on air, now it's fairly chill but of course has it's toxicity still, but fans would fight on everything. Yes the ending is rushed, but this is pretty much all they had at the time and they had to tie up all the loose ends (or most of them), and they did that in what I feel is a satisfying way. I remember a lot of people being really upset when this episode came out as there were a lot of fans that were angry that Rose didn’t come back when Steven’s gem was removed. Back then there were a lot of people that desperately wanted there to be a way for Rose, even getting into actual arguments when others tried to say there wasn’t going to be. Many fans were angry when this didn’t happen, and completely missed the point of the message. Rose coming back was never a possibility, even one of the writers of the story said that if Steven had died, the gem would cease working and die too. Not only that but you have the Gem literally saying “She’s gone” meaning Rose, meaning that Rose has been gone since the day Steven was born. The Gem may have had some repressed memories of Pink/Rose, but it wasn’t Pink anymore. The lesson that a lot of people back then failed to really grasp is that Steven isn’t his mother or Pink Diamond, Steven’s just Steven and the gem is his, not Rose or Pink Diamond, but his, he just happened to inherit his moms powers.

One of my favorite parts of this episode is that Bismuth specifically reforged Rose's sword for Connie. As well as Pearl and Connie hugging. I've mentioned it before but one of the sweetest subtle things is that after Steven and Connie fused the first time the Crystal Gems treat her like family.

Obsidian (the version with Rose Quartz in the mix) was the mystery giant gem fusion that was featured in the play in Historical Friction back in S2. This same fusion is also the inspiration for the Temple where they live. And because it's Steven, the new versions of Obsidian and Rainbow Quartz look much different. And the real life obsidian is volcanic glass. Hence why the fusion Obsidian is able to produce lava.

Happy to see that y'all enjoyed the finale. As someone who watched the show as it came out this finale left me feeling very very mixed. It makes me sad how clearly rushed this last portion of the show is as its clear this last season could have easily been 2 or even 3 seasons worth of content if they kept up the prior seasons passing. My biggest gripe was how much I felt like the show just discarded the galactic scale of itself by the end, its nice the diamond plot resolves as more of a family drama but as someone who watched it for the personal story and the galactic conflict part it felt really disappointing. I always knew the diamonds would be redeemed/forgiven in the end but it bothers me how they don't really face any of the consequences of their actions or really grow, it all happened so fast in the final season and future that to me it felt more like they just became different characters for the sake of the plot than any actual growth due to reflection of their actions and the consequences. I had just wished that if they were gonna go there with having the siblings/mom allegories be evil space dictators that they treat them as such within their forgiveness and redemption arcs but it seems like due to time constraints and those being very nuanced time-consuming angles they just wiped those aspects of the diamonds off and just focused purely on the family allegory. It just makes me sad because to me it makes the allegory lose a lot of depth, instead of a mother/grandmother with a harmful view of her child's/grandchild's sense of identity and forcibly trying to make them into someone they are not out of a view of their mother, then having to coming to terms with that false view and learning to recalibrate how they view the world and how as a person in a position of power this might have harmed people even outside of their family unit. Its basically "oh no I made y'all sad and projected my feelings about your mother onto you. I'm sorry.... The End". And it just feels so bland and unsatisfying compared to everything else in the show.

Rebecca Sugar is Jewish and the show was built around the concept that people can always be forgiven and earn that forgiveness and be better as people (as well as her wanting children to have some good queer representation as a bisexual nonbinary woman). You guessed right that the divisiveness came from people who wanted the diamonds defeated, shattered, and the entire system immediatley dismantled and all gems liberated. But the show hasnt been about defeating some big bad, its always been about growth and relationships. Anyway i like future but I dont think it gets better than this episode, though its certainly still enjoyable. I look forward to your reactions and im glad you've enjoyed it!

I think you guys nailed it! The two main complaints I've gathered from fans about the ending (not that I've explicitly searched for complaints, so I may be quite off-base here) were, as you said, (1) it felt rushed, and (2) it was unjust because the "villains" were not punished or overthrown or made to explicitly apologize. For fans like me, who had no idea of the drama behind the scenes, it DID feel particularly rushed, but that didn't really bother me, especially because I think we already knew there'd be a follow-up. As for (2), I've never felt that way, and I think you got it exactly right when you said that the show wasn't ABOUT fighting, or punishing "evil" "villains", but instead about (mostly) nonviolent conflict resolution. The resolution, though rushed, was completely in line with the overarching themes of the show -- and I like to think that in the future, the diamonds will do as much as they possibly can to change and make amends for what they've done. Anyway, I'm glad you loved the ending on its own terms.
