to add on this after the movie, it really *was* planned, because it was her default outfit. we can clearly point out that when gems are rebooted with the use of a rejuvenator or any other weapon / item of choice, they go back to their very first design. but from my speculation, i guess the default outfit was not technically shown because we never really got to see any of their [the gems] defaults when they get poofed and make themselves a redesign. idk if this was a clear explanation but i did my best :T

I don't know why the gems appear to be younger in this episode "story for Steven" why would they be kids then if they are thousands of years old. And in pictures of the past, they were shown as the same age as they appear in the show.

*My theory:* *First Pic:* This is how all gems look before they get a face, clothes, eyes, etc. It's basically their "base" form. *Second Pic:* I don't think that Pearl was the one from one of the first promo arts because in the transformation, you can clearly see that the dress is long sleeve while the promo art, she's wearing a slip dress. Overall, that was Pearl's first clothes when she was born. *Third Pic:* Like she said, I believe that those were the clothes from the pilot. *Fourth Pic:* I don't think that those were the clothes from a promo art she saw. The versions of Pearl with upswept hair (which were actually the original concept versions of Pearl) are probably what she looked like before she became Rose's Pearl, as she has used a ballet-type outfit--more practical for action--at least from the time of the flashback from The Answer. These different versions likely represent only major modifications from her past rather than every one of her versions, as Pearl was poofed regularly during the rebellion while defending Rose. Now, why does Pearl go through these versions when she reforms and Amethyst doesn't? My headcanon is that when Pearl reforms, she takes a lot of extra time and concentrated effort to get the look she's trying to achieve with her next incarnation, which necessitates running through these previous versions. Amethyst wants to reform as quickly as possible, and with little thought about it (which can be amusingly disastrous as we saw in Reformed), so her previous versions aren't needed.

It is important! It's amazing you pointed this out, even before the scene where this happens in REBOOT/.- uhm. Pearl's reboot song. Anyway, the "(3)" in it shows that she's been assigned to three other people, having been rebooted 3 times. This provides more proof and just ever so slightly helps us find out her origins, before Pink of course. I don't really know. I came up with this on the spot. Michael Franc Since garnet is a fusion, her outfit is a combination between Ruby and Sapphire's outfit. Their outfit would have to change for Garnet's to change. This only seems to be the way for unfused gems. I don't think fused gems regenerate. They simply separate.
