The creator of Steven Universe, Rebbeca Sugar, said she inspired on Spinel by a toy she lost for a year, she said when she found it the toy had a mark by the sun, it changed. Spinel was a toy for Pink, and she abandoned it, left it to the mercy of time and the elements. Something I think is that this problem could've been avoided if Pink took Spinel with her.

So, I think Rose is an interesting character since we see her character development happen in reverse. People hate her since we keep on finding out about bad things she did and each thing is worse than the last.....then these same exact people love uncle Iroh despite him being a literal war criminal who spoke happily about burning people and conquering land. The point of Rose is that people are complex and tend to do good and bad things. Pink is probably tens of thousands of years old at the very least (Didn't pearl say she was with rose for 6k years? and that was her second pearl. Pearl also considered that "recent"). If we *only* saw her development on earth and during the war people would probably idolize her.

She developed as a character but she never redeemed herself. She has never apologized for the pain she caused, which is the first thing that someone should do to fix their mistakes. She did do some good things and I understand that she isn't perfect but overall it's fair for someone not to like her.

@@Jay-kx5cb 1. We saw Greg flat out lay it down that the reason the crystal gems constantly do missions, even ones that they don't need to do, is because they feel guilty. That obviously extends to rose. 2. I know these things seem incompatible, but they aren't. Rose is REALLY REALLY bad at empathy. She tries though. She may simply not register that some people just want an apology, because to her logical mind an apology doesn't fix shit so it's pointless. Tbh she turned out pretty amazing in terms of emotions given her "upbringing".

My defense of Pink: Of course I agree that what she did to Spinel is horrible, cruel, and wrong. But at this point in her life, Pink is still fully drinking the Diamond Authority kool-aide, and she's basically a very sheltered child who has been groomed to believe that the Gems beneath her aren't people, they're tools. It isn't until she goes to Earth that she understands the cost of expanding the Empire. She'd never been exposed to other life forms or even the idea of personal agency. Her whole world up until that point was being the sweet, silly baby sister. Forever a child. She was a natural leader without voice or purpose. I think that in that moment in the garden, when she is granted her first colony, she saw this as an impossible dream come true, a chance to prove to the other Diamonds that she wasn't a child and could be the ruler she was made to be. Spinel was by definition a toy given to her to amuse and distract so the grown-ups could work. Bringing her would have been like bringing your teddy bear to your first day of work at the family company. I'm definitely not saying she was right! But, I think given her knowledge of the universe, and the limited child/adolescent psyche she seems to contain at that time, it would have been the most obvious option. I also think that by the time Pink began to appreciate all forms of life, she had truly forgotten about Spinel, in the same way, as others have mentioned, Rebecca Sugar forgot about her toy. I truly believe that Rose, the person(not form) Pink became, blocked out the memories of a lot of Homeworld Gems, like her first Pearl. Whether by choice or unconscious survival instinct, she couldn't think about the ones left behind when she was at war, physically fighting with her friends, watching them get wiped out. I think the devastation the Diamonds wreaked on the Earthen Gem population was a massively traumatic emotional burden for her, that she couldn't express and grieve fully with even her closest friends. They, with the exception of Pearl who literally couldn't talk about it, couldn't know how much guilt she was carrying along with the secret of her identity, and the knowledge that she would never be able to fix it. If she ever made too much noise on Earth or journeyed into space as Rose, she'd be hunted down and shattered by the Diamonds, along with her friends. If she revealed herself as Pink, they wouldn't kill her. But they would wipe out all Gem and organic life on Earth and whisk her back to Homeworld to be punished like an unruly child and cement her place in that world forever. I believe that she really loved Greg, and that he made her love herself again, even if she couldn't forgive. But she knew Steven would not only be a new person, totally free of her guilt and burdens, but also that he would be the only being in creation who could make the Diamonds listen. His existence was proof that the Diamonds were not superior, untouchable beings. He is a fusion of the perfection of the Diamonds and another intelligent lifeform. She knew Blue and Yellow weren't happy-look at all the references to Pink cheering them up, making them laugh, the only happy times they talk about. But they were older than her and had been indoctrinated so long and so thoroughly. They fully believed they were supreme beings, a concept Pink was only able to begin to doubt because of the way they treated her. She saw Steven as the only chance for their redemption, to wake up and see the beauty and intelligence they were destroying. Phew, that was an unintended rant but, yeah, maybe it's something. I always understood the hate for Pink after the reveal, but I could never hate her. She was a spoiled princess who, when faced with the disgusting reality the cult she was raised in was benefiting from and the part she played in it, rejected it in every way she knew how to as Pink, and when that didn't work, she murdered her old self, her old life and everything she knew and was taught to believe she was created for, to try against all odds to beat them. I think she probably didn't feel like she deserved to be happy and safe with Greg and the Crystal Gems. Steven was her ultimate sacrifice and last effort to undo all the wrong she did.

I love Spinel, her character design, her villain song is absolutely amazing (Especially if you watch that scene a second time), she has a really depressing backstory poor girl 💔, her voice actor did a phenomenal job portraying all of her emotions (really showing that she went through something, what pink did really hurt her) also singing as well, her theme is like mostly creepy reverse sounds with little glitches which fit her character and story really well, and her animation was so cool and fluid (Absolutely amazing). I also love how her eyes showed how insane she became afterwards ❤️.

i do kinda wanna comment on the fact that this film really solidified the hate a lot of fans have for rose/pink. i think pink didn't necessarily think of spinel as a friend. she was MADE to be her friend, so all they did together was play and have fun like children. so while they might've been sort of friends in the beginning, their friendship was very static. pink wanted to change, to become more "mature". but like basically all other gems, spinel didn't change and in the end pink "outgrew" her. just to clarify, i'm not excusing the fact that pink just abandoned her and left her to wait for 6000 years, she could've just left her at homeworld or something (maybe she was afraid spinel would alert the diamonds?? i dunno). and rose did some horrible things and made some really questionable choices, but she did reject the whole gem hierarchy at homeworld and tried to be better than the other diamonds. she was no saint, but i do feel like it's a bit too much how some people will say that she was basically "the true villain" of steven universe. like c'mon

Do keep in mind how the diamonds looked at gems. They aren't people, they're tools to be used. Spinel wasn't made to be Pink's friend, she was made to be her toy. And if pink told the diamonds she didn't want her toy anymore, there's a high probability she would have been shattered and recycled. I do think Pink, from the beginning, was different from the other diamonds because while she was raised to look at gems as tools or at best servants, Pink WOULD look at them somewhat like people. Enough that she didn't want Spinel killed simply because she outgrew her. Also, I can't imagine Pink entirely meant to abandon Spinel. But it's not like she ever got the opportunity to go see Spinel and set things straight.

I think you'll appreciate *Steven Universe Future* -- just as a heads up, a lot of people will say that it's pretty bad, and . . . not gonna lie, they're not wrong. Don't get me wrong, there are many things I enjoyed about the mini series: it answered some questions the original series left us with, gave more catchy songs, and I appreciate that it tried its best to wrap up as many plotpoints as possible, it still has its flaws though

An important thing to note is that pink did care about spinel even though she didn't know. She didn't really care about any gems properly until garnet came along and completely flipped her view of gems, but before that you could tell she missed spinel by her interactions with pearl before they went to earth. Spinel was a friend who played with pink and had fun with her while Pearl was meant to be a servant designed to obey commands almost mindlessly. You can tell that although pink wanted a colony she didn't enjoy being in that role when she finally had it and if pearl never took her to the surface and if she never saw the beauty of the organic life they were destroying then she probably would of gone back to playing games with spinel, but after that point she felt she had a duty to protect earth. Earth wasn't made for her like spinel and pearl, it didn't obey commands or follow orders, it had life unlike anything she had known and she felt the need to protect it. And then garnet showed up and pink realised gems could be more than what they were created to be. She realised she could have actual friends that chose her because they wanted to not because they were designed to. And with all the new friends and a whole new purpose it makes sense that pink would forget about the gem that was her "little playmate" and be focused on her new life. Pink used to look up to the other diamonds until she realised how things really were and then garnet came along and pearl was gaining more individuality and soon she had more gems that chose to go against the diamonds and to go against their original purpose. Rose was their leader but pink found herself following them as they what she really loved, the power to grow and change (maybe not always physically but emotionally). That is why she decided to (fake) shatter herself in a attempt to win the war for the gems she had grown to care about and after that there was no way she could return to homeworld or to spinel.

Spinel came to totally change his form and purpose due to psychological damage. The psychological damage is such that it can totally change the gem, both physically and mentally. It's quite sad knowing that spinel was only created for the purpose of having fun and living only for Pink. This can be seen best at minute 41:43 and 48:10 where you can clearly see the disorders that cannot be healed from one moment to the next. just like in real life... Spinel is one of my favorite characters :'D.

After all they didn't have a way to get to the humans, not to mention Spinal was clingy and considering her curiosity nearly killed Ruby I wouldn't be surprised if that was the reason why she placed on the garden.

The thing is that pink diamond redemption is reverse also in steven universe future there will be an episode where you will get to know something more about her past too and understand it in order.. Essay Incoming XD I am glad that Spinel never went with her. Definitely was a horrible thing that happened to her but a lot of these "air pockets" that Pink ended up having of her past, involving gems and even other creatures are what ended up lasting the longest during the war. Firstly Pink was so eager to be seen as a Diamond like the others, but under White, if it wasn't serving a perfect purpose it was wrong. I am honestly surprised they let Spinel exist with how much they flopped between fun with Pink and being murderous invader/dictators without any time for anything else. So a chance to make them see her as more than just the worst Diamond/spending any time with her period was a chance she wasn't going to let pass her by. No childish games = no Spinel. If she took Spinel With her, as she was showing even in the beginning, Spinel was glued to her the whole time, even her Pearls weren't so adhesive. Going through the whole story like that would've easily changed the narrative. A gem that easily identifiable by cut and behavior alone is a dead giveaway. Any gem loyal to the other Diamonds wouldn't hesitate to report that kind of thing. Even if she makes it through the whole thing, nothing stops her from getting corrupted or shattered down the line with that kind of attachment/purpose she was given. I cannot prove this last bit but from the sounds of it, around the time they were about to stage Pink's shattering, the time she likely would've gone back for Spinel would've been a very small window as the war was still happening right up to the Big Flash. Going back for Spinel, A gem not made for war before this and who didn't know anything about Rose, her battle strategies, nor her faked death afterword and bringing her into a warzone that likely had alert eyes everywhere was both a hazard to her plans and their safety. I want to believe the Garden is someplace near Homeworld that would've only been accessible by a Homeworld warp network, something they didn't improve or add again until after the end of the first series. The only one they had was what all the fleeing gems used to escape the Diamond flash, a flash that may or may not have damaged the warps there, and even if they hadn't Pink's observation about fighting for Earth was right. "If we lose we'll be killed, and if we win, we can never go home." Even testing said warps was a risk to the gems that remained and might've brought more back to Earth and easily repeated the recolonization/destruction of it. When she became Rose, she could only do what she could with who remained. To make amends for anything after that was too little too late. Having lost that many gems, and now being stranded, she got what she wanted. She helped set forth in motion change that sadly cost the lives of countless gems and scarred the rest, Spinel included. TL:DR yes, Spinel was one of many gems Pink hurt trying to get away from/trying to get the Diamonds to see and accept her for she was. Does it excuse her? No. Would it have happened any other way? If it did the story wouldn't be what it is now. Could anyone here have done any better as a Diamond in her place to fix/prevent anything with the only resources she herself had available, especially in the Interpersonal communications department? Highly unlikely but not impossible. Spinel definitely deserved better, but again, it's wasn't as simple as some people want to believe. I'm glad Steven was born after all of that because he was able to do things that Pink would never have been able to even if she was the best character, including bringing Spinel home. The whole Gem Civilization thing was a horrible messed up system. Pink played her part, and so did the others. Forgive or don't, absolutely, but don't cherry pick for convenience, or do. Like the point of the series, "You're free to be whoever you are."

At first I thought that pink left spinel because she was bored, but the more I watch the movie the more I think that she left spinel because she didn't want spinel to be hurt as well, then pink rebelled and faked her shattering, so she couldn't go get her anyway even if she need more gems to help fight homeworld. So 6,000 years later here we are.

I can't believe I just started watching your Steven Universe reactions a few days ago, and I'm already here. I just happened to catch up on my birthday, which just happened to be in time for the movie. I know we still have Future to look forward to, but I'm still sad about this ending. Are you planning to get back into Adventure Time? I know it's a long series, and it's a bit of a slow start, but it really became one of the best cartoons ever. It's actually what I watched when I originally finished Steven Universe (or at least when I caught up on all the episodes that were out at the time).

I like that even though the conflicts with them were quickly resolved it's pretty clear that Spinel and the diamonds are all still pretty messed up. Sort of like how the gems themselves were good at the start of the series but clearly had loads of issues they hadn't addressed. I like to think maybe in another thousand years the diamonds and spinel will start having their own character arcs and grow into more functional people.

38:25 while i cant say anything to pink's thoughts after leaving spinel in the garden, i don't think there was a chance to come back if she wanted to. she went from the garden to oversee earth's invasion, to starting the rebellion, to the corruption of the gems and the destruction of the galaxy warp, which only got fixed after the end of the series (since peridot fixed them, then garnet destroyed them again). once everything kicked off, there was no way to warp back to the garden.
