Conan is such a master. When he’s got Bill Burr or Norm on he’s gotta play the straight guy who is asking the questions and keeping things on task and from totally going off the rails. Now here’s Steven Wright who is deep and seriously contemplative and Conan switches into the wild-card position his guests normally sit in. He knows the balance of how much structure vs chaos needs to be in a good dialogue and he’ll swing from side to side to keep the balance so his guests can just be themselves.

Steven Wright changed my life: hearing his material caused me to subconsciously adjust to his wavelength, which in turn inspired me to write new one liners, without copying him. I had no intention of doing anything with this new material, but it kept flowing until I had over a thousand jokes in my file. I decided to try & sell them, but after a while the notion that I would have to perform them myself was unavoidable. I was already a pensioner over 70 but I booked an open mic slot & went on to perform repeatedly for the following five years. Thank you Steven, you changed my life.

Steven Wright is exceptional in general, I especially love when he gets to shoot the ish with other comedians, you get those glimpses of two professionals in their field, knowing how the sausage is made, chuckling to each other on a meta level above the jokes themselves, like two Oz wizards winking at each other from behind the curtain. Conan and Craig Ferguson especially tickled those moments out of him.

Conan was right about one thing. Steven wright is a palate cleanser. After years of nothing but broad yuk, yuks and wife jokes on TV, he came out of the mist and turned comedy on its side..."There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot.".... And after his set is done you feel refreshed and wanting more. His first appearance on the Tonight Show with Johnny might be one of the funniest and revealing stand up sets in the history of the show.
