I was mostly frustrated that Stephen made no effort to understand what the guy was saying. He had his pre-intended conclusion that he kept driving the guy towards, ignoring answers and putting words in his mouth. Its soo easy and convenient to claim a moral high ground when you are living in a comfortable and non threatening environment. If you were surrounded by violence all the time your disposition towards said violence might very heavily be skewed. Here's what I got from the debate: 1. Steven wanted Josh to clarify what Josh meant when he wrote "The principle of free speech on which the United States was founded was not conceived with our modern interconnectedness in mind, nor has it scaled to adapt to it" in his article. Steven's point was: free speech is free speech no matter what form it's in. Josh's counterpoint was: A line should be drawn for free speech. 2. Steven then asks, "Who defines those lines?" After a messy back and forth, they finally clarify that Josh advocates for a human element to draw the lines for when free speech becomes hate speech and/or harassment. 3. Steven tries to point out to Josh that humans are inherently biased and that humans change positions often. If the line is always changing, someone's speech deemed okay could another day be deemed hate speech. 4. In Josh's article he writes "Facebook’s color-blind and tone-deaf approach to content moderation must be overhauled to adopt an intersectional model shaped by more context of who is often victimized." My question to Josh was: who determines the "context of who is victimized?" It seems that Josh is implying that white men have more power than women and people of color and the responsibility lies with them when he writes "It’s time for white men, who largely control these services and the traditional media, to stand by them as allies and actually take action." Crowder tries to point out that Josh's article was written through a racial lens. And Josh countered with something along the lines of "No, I'm not... you're reading it with a racial lens." How can Josh argue that when he's writing that "white men" need to stick up for "women and people of color"? 5. Steven tries to point out that white men are not the only ones with power. A person with a large following (someone not white) has more power to do harm simply by inciting their followers to harass someone than a person with a smaller following that would attempt to do the same thing. This point completely flies over Josh's head. Overall: Steven won me over with his reasoning. P.S. I love your content! I'm not implying that your positions on these issues are either right or wrong, but that analogy doesn't do them any justice. Voting is a legal right whereas publishing to Twitter is not. On that note, I'd like to point out that these hypocrisy analogies are generally useless. Even if you demonstrate an inconsistency in someone's reasoning for two positions successfully, you are committing a logical fallacy if you expect that to discredit either of that person's positions. Both positions could be correct for completely different reasons. For example, it's possible that "People shouldn't need ID to vote" and "people need every form of ID online so they can't spam Twitter" could both be reasonable positions for reasons other than, say, combatting racism.

I just saw your comment. Were coming up on 4 years and this conversation is more relevant than ever before. Crowder has even more evidence to show just how biased these social media companies have become. These social media platforms now hold more power than the news, newspaper (any printed press, really), and even what used to be the local public square. What I mean by that last part is that public opinion is now massively influenced by the opinions and world events shared on social media. Which, is now the most influential public place to discuss ideas with one another. When the policies of the social media platforms silence the ideas shared by nearly half the country, and not the other half, we have a problem. For that reason, I believe the power these social media companies have, is too large and influential to simply be regulated by a board of executives alone. As much as I believe in less government power in the private lives of ppl, I do think that social meda companies need more government oversight. By government oversite, I mean we need to make sure that the more popular political ideology should not be allowed to silence the less popular political ideology. The balance of power can always shift, but the right to share your opinion should not be diminished because it is less popular. Our government was never meant to be dominated by the ideals of one political party. If were being honest, the more left leaning group of ppl now have the loudest voice. There will always be shifts in power, but at this point, conservative or even right leaning ppl are very much being targeted and actively silenced. Its bad for discussion. Its bad for balancing the needs of the entire country when were discussing new ideas and policies. Its bad for the way new generations are first introduced to the political environment. When one group of ppl move to silence another group and then use peer pressure to enforce their ideology alone, we are in trouble. Nobody has to like the opinions of ppl who disagree with them, but silencing the other person can create echo chambers where no idea is ever really scrutinized. At the end of the day we need each side to scrutinize the ideas of the other, in order to improve our quality of life for everyone. There is growth in a healthy challenging of your own ideas. We as a people and a country need to continue to grow and learn through discussion. We need to continue to protect the freedom of thought and opinion. If we continue to silence opinions, we will without fail, turn into the tyrannical government early Americans left in order to fight for equality of opinion.
