Remember the old policy Steve, if you fix the problem, it's charged at your regular rate. If the customer helps, it's double your regular rate! Great video Steve!

It was probably the nozzle or that head being loose. Your right about the nozzles. You do get a bad one or temperamental one. Specially with a burner running kerosene. Never cared much for Carlin or Riello burners. They try to be so different. You can go anywhere and get Beckett parts.

Love your videos Steve. Very informative. No one wants to train you properly when your on a job. Most guys just want to get in and out as quickly as possible and training takes time and patience which makes your channel, and a few other guys, an excellent resource where a guy can take it all in at their own speed.

I thought it was the nozzle to begin with. Bad nozzle or it was too big. Can’t trust it when the customer states he changed something. That’s the first thing I’d redo.

On some older concentric vent terminals, there are joints inside that are sealed with silicone. If the silicone deteriorates over time, you can have flue gasses mixed in the combustion air. Some terminals had resistance right at the exit to create back pressure to force the exhaust away from the house which will force the exhaust into the intake through the leak. This causes the flame to become unstable just like what happened to you when you added air. It will run ok for a minute or so until the exhaust gets to the leak and down the intake. I had this happen on a 90's era Trianco. Had to replace the vent terminal with a Field which I don't think they make anymore. Most DV units that I see now come with Z-Flex DVO terminal. If you get called back, look for soot/smoke in the air intake or blower wheel and let it run with the vrv closed and see if it becomes unstable after a minute or two. You can't just route clean air from somewhere else because the combustion air coming in is what gives the terminal zero clearance to combustibles.

Welcome to my world of troubleshooting. I'm always called when others can't figure it out. But they don't tell me that so each time I run into the crazy s**t then later hear that nobody else could figure it out. Never assume even a new part is good. Especially not these days when the part prices are astronomical and the quality is crap. I work on very different gear but the same troubleshooting principles apply.

Nozzle are one of the most common problems and extremely sensitive, if it was handled by someone that does not know that it definitely could have become compromised.

So was it the coupling or the nozzle in the end. Hard to tell . The customer replaced the nozzle earlier and the problem remained.

You have a draft issue which is very common for Carlin, did used oil heaters for a long time. Blackgold, Cleanburn and Energylogic .Carlin has a very sophisticated draft system for their catalytic clean exhaust. You need to put a proper venting system because your riser is an issue.

I guarantee after you left the gasket and the extra screws were put back on along with the baffles put back in. If the homeowner wasn’t there you would have been out of there in 30 minutes with just an annual service.

Iif that front door is not sealing properly you will have that problem with buderus make sure you tighten hinge side first .the baffles could have not letting it close all the way

Mostly the customer doesn't tell half the story, he could have opened up the nozzle to clean or inspect and compromised it. I would start with a clean setup new nozzle, electrodes and difusor 😎. By the way there is liquid you can spray inside the furnace it will clean the sooth in no time 💥💥

Guess it could’ve been a defective new nozzle, but did anyone check the oil quality when it started dying out? Maybe he got some bad fuel with crap floating around in it and you finally purged it out by the end.
