In Steven Wilson's own words: “The song is based on a story but one that wasn’t mine; it was suggested to me by the guy [Hajo Mueller] who was illustrating, doing the artwork and the book. The idea is about a couple driving along in a car at night, very much in love; the guy is driving, and his partner - his wife or girlfriend or whoever she is - is in the passenger seat, and the next minute she’s gone. “The guy is crazy: What happened? Where did she go? He does all the obvious things: looks under the seats, stops and checks the road, all of that. The song is basically about missing time; it’s the idea of blocking out time because of something so traumatic that you literally remove it from your mind. “The story ultimately winds up with the ghost of the partner coming back, years later, and saying, ‘I’m going to remind you now what happened that night.’ There was a terrible car accident, and she died, etcetera, etcetera - again, the idea of trauma leading to a missing part of this guy’s life. He can’t deal with the reality of what happened, so he blocks it out - like taking a piece of tape and editing a big chunk out of it. It’s a sad, very beautiful song about loss. “It has an extraordinary guitar solo. Guthrie’s playing is just sublime. That, for me, is the memory of this song. I had done a solo on the demo, knowing that I wanted an anthemic, epic solo at the end. In the studio, we did four or five takes, and each time Guthrie would reinvent the idea of what the solo could be. “The particular solo we chose was either the first or the second one. It was so inspired and had such a beautiful sense of logic and storytelling to it. It’s one take, unedited, and it’s just unbelievably brilliant. And it’s improvised - he didn’t plan anything. It was such a moving experience to hear him play it. I was almost in tears."

This song resonates very much with me, as me and my girlfriend had a terrible car accident last year. A drunk and high driver lost control of her car and hit us head-on. Knocked our car straight on the sidewalk, it was unrecognizable after. We both fainted, and woke up later with the glass from the windshields in our mouths. Fortunately, we got out (or maybe they pulled us out, we don't remember) and people helped us out. We were in the hospital for a few days, and luckily walked off only with a concussion, a broken wrist on my part, and various bruises for both of us. But I remember breaking down crying when my gf lamented a weird pain in her stomach on the drive in the ambulance. I begged the paramedics to look after her and forget about me, I was convinved I was going to lose her. Thank God it all worked out. :)

+Joseph Bennett Well you can clearly hear Guthrie's style of soloing ! Being a big fan of Guthrie, I know this is improvised, he never plays the same solo twice ;)
@XiyuYang8 жыл бұрын
Joseph Bennett No I'm not, read it here, www.themonolith.com/music/music-video-steven-wilson-make-the-drive-home/ However, I don't think SW mentioned that the guitar solo on Regret #9 is improvised. Guthrie did say that he borrowed an American Deluxe Strat for that solo, it might be improvised, it might not. No need for the sarcasm pal. I know SW rarely improvises anything in PT, No-Man, Bass Communion, Blackfield, I.E.M. or Storm Corrosion. I can tell that almost nothing in all these projects are improvised. However, he is very open to improvisation in most of his solo works, perhaps excluding Insurgentes.

Guthrie’s solo is breathtaking, it’s pure emotion and serves the music perfectly. No ego at play.

I came to this song after watching the Rick Beato interview (which was fantastic by the way!). I have been a Porcupine Tree fan since I first learned of them in 2005. Seen them live three times. I haven't followed Steven's solo work as closely. I just listened to this song for the first time and it moved me to tears. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Guthrie's solo was absolutely incredible. This is one of those very rare moments in my life that I cherish so much because I just heard a song for the first time that I absolutely loved immediately added to my favorites list after one listen. It's so rare for me to like a song this much this quickly. I just listened twice in a row and I feel like I could listen to this song on loop for 24 hours. Thank God for Steven and the gifts he's been given and the amazing work he's been doing for many many years now.

Worth listening to the whole of the album that this song is from, and Steven's follow up album. Guthrie does the guitar work on both. They are great albums even when excluding Guthrie's contributions.

Any person who has gone through the devastation of loss can relate to every bit of that solo.. Guthrie and Steven are two gems of this world.. People are very impressed with the guitar solo; it's exceptional, a fact, but what really stands out is the theatrical context, the construction of the drama, the emptiness and hopelessness as protagonists, it's as if we invited guilt, pain, sadness and perplexity for not accepting the facts , all contained in musical notes that express sensations that many do not like to face, but that are always present, sometimes more intense, sometimes more subtle, and only the very sensitive can capture the waves of multi-feelings that gather within a human being. this is the great force in Steven Wilson's musicality; this one, a troubadour of tragedies and the wizard Guthrie Govan honoring primacy over speed; tearing souls into deep immersion; to say: A masterful solo, sovereign, detached from everything that has been heard in the current moment in the history of the guitar. Congratulations from an unconditional admirer of the colossal work proposed by a group of geniuses united by the love of music built on the flames of excellence.
