It's true that fans can sound very exaggerated when we say that these five girls are the best hard rock band of the moment, but if you stop to think about it... it is that today nobody puts as much into their music as Band Maid. Infinite guitar riffs, top notch musicianship, energetic two hours live performances, chemistry on and off stage, songwriting that is both progressive and popular, with a lead bass vs lead guitar uncharted (because of being completely new) architecture, original and edgy drumming, multilayered catchy vocals with heavenly voices... and so much more I could go on. They do nothing but fill the lives of their fans (we the masters and princesess) with joy and good music, nobody cares for them as much as they do.
@stevehall51282 жыл бұрын
There's that weird and special thing with Band-Maid where you become a fan, and then you keep hearing and noticing more and more and more as you keep listening to them. Ryan Mear played some bits from the _UW_ score CD with the vocals stripped out and pretty much everybody, even non-musicians, was like "Holy Crap I never knew that guitar part was even THERE before!" Not that we don't love the vocals too, but they can be distracting and bury other stuff in the mix....although I do think even if one never consciously heard it, that extra guitar track added something that makes people go, "Oh holy cow this is GOOOOOOOOD but I don't even know why." It's like adding an eighth-teaspoon of a spice that no one would normally _taste_ to a dish, but which accentuates all the obvious flavors. Kanami, and the band as a whole, are freakin' geniuses, and I think it's just because they can, and they want to, because they love music - because somehow they usually know the difference between doing something just to do something _extra_ vs. doing something because it _works_ and also goes above and beyond. I mean there are bands that I love that make an effort to make real quality music, but B-M _starts_ at that level and then builds from there. (And I should say that there _are_ other bands with different styles who do the same, it's just that the Maids hit almost allllll my personal sweet spots.)

@@stevehall5128 Hi Steve!. I agree of course. For a while, at the beginning, I was wondering if I was deceiving me, if I was exaggerating myself. I don't care if I'm a fanboy, I just wanted to be honest with myself. Then Conqueror came along, I heard instrumental Domination and I didn't hesitate anymore. The five of them probably make up the best songwriting team in active.

G'day Steve, that looked like fun! Full conversion to Maidiac almost complete - just need to learn their names: Saiki - lead vocals, some lyrics, Queen of the Stage Miku (Kobato) - rhythm guitar, main lyrics, band founder, heart of the band Kanami - lead guitar, main composer, riff monster, sweetest Rock star MISA - on-stage-barefoot bass assassin, virtuoso bassist that will get you Akane - drums, insanely good feel and fills, elevates every song

“Dice” is a slamming song. Guitarist Kanami writes the music, with Akane & Misa having broad leeway in the rhythm section. Founder/guitarist/vocalist Miku writes the lyrics. I’m not exaggerating when I say this, but there are no bad songs from the ladies, only varying degrees of excellence ranging from good to amazingly fantastic. Keep in mind that their live performance versions are almost always better than the studio originals. Great review, you have plenty of kickass Band Maid songs to choose from.

Blooming is always an excellent choice. Since I first found these ladies, I've watched quite a few other musicians fall in love with this band. Even after they've worked out just how legit they are, Blooming still makes them go "Holy sh*t!" It's kind of a modern rock masterpiece.

MISA! MISA! MISA! PoP-Punk is a term that has been used a lot to describe Band Maid, particularly early on. By 2016-2017 they had moved a bit away from that side (probably due to all the managment changes and more freedom in their ability to write their own songs) and into a heavier Rock feel but by late 2018-2019 it started to come back a lot more in their songs. I remember when Dice dropped. We were all just floored from the first notes of MISA's intro. At that time this song was one of their heaviest.... then came Conqueror (album) and they went to a more mid-tempo sound (for good reasons)... and then... then the MASTERPIECE that is Unseen World dropped last year and Band-Maid blew everyone's minds with the sonic assault that album is.... Playing World Domination, Conqueror, and Unseen World back to back to back will melt your brain. You mentioned that you still have Blooming to watch... if that doesn't become your favorite Band-Maid song or one of them I would be surprised. As amazing as Dice is Blooming takes it to another level... then... LOL... there is No God. When I first heard No God I was giggling at the sheer audacity and boldness of that composition. I respected the pop-punk bands for their energy and their hook-writing ability, but for me they always lacked overall musical depth (tho this could be because they never inspired me to dig into stuff beyond the hits I'd hear on radio or tv). There was no _meat_ in the sense that the arrangements were pretty pedestrian, they pretty much always hoed the same row, and there were few if any WOW moments in the playing; it felt like one could reshuffle the band memberships and barely notice. More alternative choices like Hum or Sunny Day Real Estate were a lot more interesting for me, and just as catchy in their own way. Not only did Band-Maid take that sub-genre and fill it out to its full potential, IMO they've done the same with arena rock and thrash, and lately with (hard) proggy stuff (the latter by taking material that _does_ have musical meat on its bones and making it catchy as well). And then somehow they can also throw all these things together in the same song, along with some funky or jazzy bits (I even hear some contemporary R&B in "Corallium") and somehow make them all flow together instead of just being juxtaposed next to each other. (P.S. There were/are definitely one or two stand-out bands in each of these areas, but I think the Maids stand alongside them while adding some new wrinkles.) Solid reaction once again, I like your concise "quick observations" style.

Boy do I agree with this… when i first kept hearing people call Band Maid “punk” or “pop punk”, I was like WTF, I’ve never heard anything in that genre that in any way compares to this?! So, it’s just a surface-level comparison. Nowadays their compositions, instrumentally, remind me of classic Yes, and Rush, with those pop-punk vocal stylings that so many people mention. That’s a tremendous combination, obviously, although I’d have never guessed that such a thing would exist if I didn’t hear it myself. And it’s not really as simple as that, since they are too diverse for me or anyone else to sum up in just a sentence or two.

It's a bit misleading when people say "they are the best band in the world". Are they "the best musicians" in the world? Definitely not! Not by a long stretch really, though they are definitely talented and above-par players (even Miku got really good as rhythm guitarist really fast). What makes them stand apart from other bands is the combination of all their talents : how Kanami's composition are filled with amazing drum fills by Akane and MISA's bass lines , complimented by the very unique vocals and harmonies of Saiki and Miku and then carefully envelopped in a dizzying and yet finely structured wall of guitar noise by Miku and of course (closing the circle) Kanami. The nearly omnipresent not extremely technically complex solos which are always the perfect length and never overstay are just sugar on top. It's not so much that they are "the best band in the world", and more that they are so unique they can not really be compared to any other band.

Both great songs (of course, I mean...BAND-MAID, duh) but Black Hole especially will melt your brain. Nemophila is also great, as others have said, and another J-Metal band with harsh vocals I'm trying to point people to is SAISEIGA. The last one there is newer, having just released their first album last week, I think. I'm really infatuated with their singer Regan's voice. To me they are a pop fusion band they do pop power ballad, pop metal, pop-funk, prog pop, pop metal or anything goes, pop factor mainly comes from vocal melody and they would sound completely different without vocal, but then it wouldn't be the same, it won't be the bandmaid I love. 5 of them complete the sound. It's not just one of them standing out. Everyone adds so much to their music. Does something that can change their songs for the better. Dice is funky as...and with bit of a bluesy tone as well as pop punk. So addictive when the end result is always so musically satisfying.

Although as a counterpoint (and not nay-saying your preferences at all), I have definitely been more able to appreciate styles that I found off-putting before through reading comments from B-M fans who are coming from those parts of the musical spectrum. I assume it's because of their diversity, but they're a great bridge or entry-point from one style to an unfamiliar one. Funny thing is that there are quite a few screams from Miku on _Unseen World_ but they're in her own style and she does all kinds of other vocal stuff on top of that. A lot of bands are like, "OK, that works well, we'll just do that ad infinitum" and Band-Maid is like, "We're gonna do that AND six other things."
@SteveOGRock2 жыл бұрын
Love your comment, Steve. Mark, I can definitely see how in a world of rock which increasingly features scream vocals it can feel oddly refreshing when a band doesn't have that element. But, as per Steve's comment, Band-Maid certainly don't seem to limit themselves musically... and I think neither should anyone. Explore some light music, and explore heavier music with scream vocals. There is a place for all of it.

@@SteveOGRock great reactions Steve. I appreciate everyone’s comments and their appreciation for all kinds of music. I was just stating mine. I consider Dice to be one of my favorite Jrock/Japanese songs of all time, up there with the songs made by some of the top Jrock bands. I used to think that this is "only" a great, fun, and uplifting song, but after hearing it carefully multiple times, I came to the realization that something's different about Dice. If you think about it, and hear it again and again and again, everything fits perfectly, the tune, chorus, bridge, transition, tone selection, even the emphasis on the vocal during certain bars and the words used, the noticeable huge basslines but not overpowering anything, and the drum beats, everything is very very close to perfect in a sense of what a Japanese Hard Rock song could ever be.

Not a bad song. They are the best rock band in the world in my humble opinion. The parts all fit and they are actually friends. Watch some of the fan cam stuff and you'll really see what they're about.

A BAND-MAID a day keeps the doctor away 😊 You had a lot of good points describing the BAND-MAID phenomenon, but Saiki "screaming, growling, grunting" or whatever you'd like to call it, no, please no. Never.

If you go "that bass!" every time MISA does something gnarly on that thing, you'll develop a verbal tic.
@markjames48632 жыл бұрын
Yup! they are unreal......Honestly they have changed how i listen to music. I now pay more attention to the bass. Also i look to see if a song is just copy and paste or just plain simple. I don't know if they are the best hard rock band in the world right now. But they would have my vote. Can you tell me who is doing it better? Check out the song Arcadia Girl. Unfortunately i do not have a link for you. I have it on Apple music. Maybe someone knows where you can hear it. Tell me a Band playing like that right now? I cant think of any. Great reaction.......

i downloaded Arcadia Girl from my cd and also have a link for Arcadia Girl when it was their opener in their show in Mexico in 2016 (b4 the start of the song they all introduce themselves in Spanish). P n D also has a pictorial version of Arcadia girl. that is one of my top 3 B-M songs

happy and complimentary the entire video... what did you do with the real Steve? (gets to the end of the video... ah, Steve O is hopped up on cold meds, that ...explains much.... )
@SteveOGRock2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha! Oh dear, is it really that rare that I'm complimentary throughout? XD lol. I try to find the positives in the music I listen to but also I want to try and be objective and honest about what I think of things. And I think the end result is that some reaction videos of mine have truly special moments like this... when I hear a song like Dice and I just have nothing but great things to say about it because I really mean it. This song, this band, is quite exceptional. If I just pretend to love every song I listen to then none of my reactions have any value. They have to be authentic. I genuinely loved every second of this one. It deserves the praise in my view. Either way, I'm genuinely honoured that you've clearly watched enough of my content to have a take on my general feedback style haha. Thanks for coming back, bishop steiner! Great to have you here.

So say it! Best F*cking Band in The World! If you don't agree have the balls to say who is. You haven't done 'Blooming'? Okay, now I know why you didn't know they were the Best F*cking Band in The World! You als o have to do 'Rinne' their heaviest song yet.
@frankgonzalez48532 жыл бұрын
when i say they are the best rock band in the world i always emphasize "band" there is no other group of musicians with the talent, charisma commaraderie or sheer love of music and of their fans that compose one band. there might be individual musicians that are better but no band that is better from top to bottom in all aspects of their music technicality composing performance and joy of being together

If you're going to do No God (and you totally should) you could try something different and do a double header. If you google "Bandmaid No God Instumental" there is a studio version without vocals where you pick up fills and parts that you totally miss when the voals are over the top, then play the Live version of the song which is on their channel.
@SteveOGRock2 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I do understand the reasoning there, and appreciate the tip, but really... as much as I want to hear every detail as much as possible what I am most interested in is hearing the full intended song with every element including vocals first time round. So thank you for the suggestion, but I'm going to dive into the live version I think.

@@SteveOGRock Cool, just honestly, listen to the instrumental as well even if it's just for yourself, it's got so many layers.

NOOOO! No scream voice in Band-Maid please... It is the reason i enjoy them so much, i want actually a good singer and not somebody who is growling and screaming into their microphone... I know that is an art for itself, but i personally hate it and dont like it at ALL! That is the reason i avoid so many metal bands, i know they make great music, i would hear an instrumental FOR SURE, but the screaming kills it for me... Band-Maid is perfect how they are!

Just curious, how do you feel about it as more of an accent or just one element, as in "Take My Chance" by Doll$box?
