Anyone who has ever laughed *at* “Spock’s Brain” has realized on some low level that irreverence is a form of love. The TOS, TAS, and DS9 tribbles episodes remind us that it is okay and encouraged to not take things deadly seriously and to find the humor in events.

I have matured over the years, but Young Me was very sensitive to people making fun of the things I loved. This was in the days of sci-fi not being mainstream. I remember tuning into TNG and feeling on-edge when someone else walked into the room. I was almost expecting them to laugh at it, or me. An innate aspect of fandom is the emotional attachment to a piece of media. Making fun of the media makes fun of the fan, in a lot of cases. My emotional and social maturity was under-developed at that age, so I could get hurt and defensive pretty fast. I think what helped was the consumption of other things not-Star-Trek. The more I could compare and contrast against, the more flaws in Star Trek I could see. But, I could also see its strengths in a new light.

One of my favorite Futurama jokes is the episode where they reveal that Star Trek has become a religion, with churches and everything! Not only is that episode hilarious, with cameos from the living original cast members, but the meta joke about the desperate clinging to the canon of StarTrek is brilliant in its own right! And, for what it’s worth, Futurama is one of my favorite shows too! It is an absolutely brilliant sci fi parody, that only true fans can make.

I'm glad to hear that you once took Batman too seriously. Me and most of my friends went through that exact same evolution, but people don't talk about it much. We tend not to give the benefit of the doubt to people who take things too unrigidly seriously, be recognizing that most of us went through that phase selves. Yes, it's an immature response, but that mostly means people haven't grown out of it yet.

I do think a lot of people taking these shows much more seriously tend to be struggling with mental illness/neurodivergence tho and we need to be mindful of that. I have adhd and often hyper focus on shows to an unhealthy degree, but it’s part of my functionality and hyper focusing isn’t something I can control so if I hyper focus on something that starts to upset me or something other people trash it’s impact affects me deeply. Same goes with people struggling with autism or other issues very similar. You make great points in this video, but it’s not exactly taking into account people who might be neurodivergent and struggle with doing just that. I’ve gotten better at this point through therapy and practice… not everyone has that luxury….

Obviously we should try to be courteous to other people's feelings and struggles, but that's not really what Steve is talking about here. He's talking about the people who vitriolically attack anyone with an opinion divergent to their own.

Additionally, some people just express their love for something by taking it seriously. Finding a healthy way to do this can take time.
@kaitlyn__L
@kaitlyn__L Жыл бұрын
While it’s true it’s easier to fall into those lines of thinking, it’s definitely not inevitable even without paying for expensive therapy! But maybe I’m lucky in that during my malleable-brain years, anime fandom had “abridged series” which made fun of them all but from a loving place. So ever since I came to Star Trek, I always kinda wished there was more of that irreverence! I’ve seen other commenters credit MST3K with providing them a similar mental framework to apply to other works and formats. (I’m autistic and have ADHD, and definitely the first time I experienced that “fandom seriousness” was with Thomas the Tank Engine lol) I do also agree with Emeral Bookwise that they’re not the main toxic complainers Steve is discussing, but I won’t rehash their comment since it already exists! So in as much as this video makes a personal plea to the viewers, it’s definitely not just something you can turn on and off at will, but with practice watching how your brain works, you can start to exert control to (subtly at first) nudge yourself away from certain emotional reactions which you dislike. Like “oh, I’m getting annoyed at a movie again, maybe I’ll finish this thought and then refocus on something else”
@CaptainPikeachu
@CaptainPikeachu Жыл бұрын
While I do agree, I also think groups like the fandom menace types aren’t struggling with those things, they’re just grifting on hatred. So I do think there is a difference with someone’s hyperfixation (which I get too) and someone willing to attack and hate and tear at creatives with often bigoted comments.
@citrinedragonfly
@citrinedragonfly Жыл бұрын
MST3K has this stated blatantly in their theme song, and I think having heard and sung-along to it many times in middle school and high school, it's helped me with this: "If you're wondering how he eats and breathes and other science facts/Then repeat to yourself it's just a show, I should really just relax". It's one thing to, in the moment while watching, get swept up in the story itself and treat it as a form of 'reality' while suspending disbelief. But after the show's over, and you're back in reality, looking at things this way is helpful. It's also a form of knowing yourself and how you react. On a first viewing, I am completely absorbed in whatever I'm watching/reading/etc. The outside world ceases to exist, and I'm fully immersed in the story. It's only on subsequent watchings/readings that I can get a sense of perspective and distance myself from the media. That all being said, I'm also the one who, after having my students watch Spartacus (Kirk Douglas version), and they've seen the Big Scene everyone knows (and I've had my tear-up over Antoninus's final scenes), shows them the Pepsi commercial from about a decade ago, that takes the Big Scene everyone knows and turns it into the most hilarious soda commercial I've ever seen. Gotta be able to laugh at your favorites, and Spartacus is one of my very most favorite movies (second only to the Lost Skeleton of Cadavra and The Abominable Dr. Phibes, which tie for first).

I get some people liking one Hulk over the other. Some people were saying, "Don't make it Ang Lee" they wouldn't like him when he was Ang Lee's. Dancing Spock is funny, it's an advert, so it's fine. If he'd done it just after Hemmer gorns it, I would probably complain a little. Taking the piss is a good old British tradition, we know how bad Blake's 7 or Dr Who's special effects were, and we all took the piss, but we loved them. It's what we do with our mates. Maturity is knowing when and where it's OK and when it's not.

To quote one of Londo's wives: "Whatever it is, it can't be that bad." I disliked a fair few things done in The Rings of Power, and it certainly changes a number of things, but I overall quite enjoyed it. It wasn't the best TV show I watched last year (that was Arcane), but it received a lot more vitriol than it deserved, I think. But do I think the people who despised it are unsophisticated pea brains with maybe three braincells rubbing together? Okay, that depends on the specific criticism (keeping in mind the, for instance, Italian Fascist Party's love of Tolkien's work...), I suppose, but mostly no, of course not. This is really quite an interesting way people think, I suppose.

Very well spoken! On every point. Across the spectrum, diversity has been impostered around as "divided". As something negative. As if our civility should be broken for it. Somehow, the value of diversity has become obscure. We should embrace our divisions. Those aren't bad things. Division is the foundation stone, upon which the best of civility and society was built: The United States of America. I'm glad that there are people who love eggs. So that I don't have to touch a single one :)

Straight up agree. Point of fun nuance. A lot of my formative years involved the so-called Angry Reviewer era of media criticism. The reviewers who would play a character who were so incensed, so personally affronted by the existence of bad media in their wheelhouse that they needed to destroy it with criticism (and sometimes literally). In maturing among that environment, I noticed that there were some examples that I found excellent and fun, who clearly *enjoyed* the process of roasting things, while I also noticed that there were some examples that came across as not having fun at all. One of the former, Linkara (who reviews bad comic books, even to this day), would mention in candid comments and such how people would ask him "Why don't you go read good comics, instead of complaining about bad ones?", to which he would invariably reply that he *does* read good comics, on his own time, and he loves them; that he loves comics, and that bringing out the bad ones to face the light of day is both cathartic for him, and hilarious for his audience in a similar way to the 'Deep Hurting' from MST3K was for viewers of that program; and that if we want to expect the companies that make media we like to make good things, we do need to call them out when they make bad things, and be able to articulate how they are bad. He also is on record saying that all media is worth critique, of the good and bad about it - nothing is too sacred to examine or too trashy to be worth the effort. A lot of the 'Angry Reviewers' that I actually enjoyed followed similar philosophies - they were essentially *mocking* the 'angry fan' who 'takes things too seriously' with their demeanor, while displaying their love of the art by diligently taking these things apart to thoroughly roast and riff on them. People would always come up in comments to tell them 'not to take it so seriously, it's just a movie/comic/show' - but I never got the impression that the point was generally that 'you should hate this', but, as you suggest here, a sort of boisterous irreverence. So yeah, on the one hand, it's important to take a step back and enjoy a cheeseburger from your sacred cows, to keep that sort of perspective and not let ourselves get to caught up in everything; but on the other hand there is also a benefit of elevating even 'bad' media to position of Serious Discussion; because if we can't take a good academic look at what makes things good and bad and why the decisions get made that make something bad... well, then we'll never really be able to expect much better, either.

In regards to the Hulk films: With the exception of the obvious casting differences and some minor differences (mostly just aesthetic callbacks to the 1970s series) in the opening exposition dump of the film, I think “The Incredible Hulk” acts nearly flawlessly as a sequel to Ang Lee’s “Hulk.” It basically continues the story with very little contradiction at all. That’s one of the things I like about that film. It’s a hard reboot AND a soft sequel (which is a combination that basically never happens), and I think that’s neat.

I can go into detail about all the interwoven themes and nuances that Lucas sought to communicate, the lore and continuity (including problems within said continuity), listing specs of the E-11 blaster rifle, the history of the Old Republic, the deep tragedy of the clone wars and the emotional intensity of Luke's redemption of his father, etc. etc. etc. And I will still find "sand" to be the funniest meme and line of dialogue from anything. And it's funny BECAUSE I love everything else. I used to despise Jar Jar, until I saw an interview with Lucas where he discussed his reasoning behind the character. And while I ultimately disagree with his method, it lightened me up greatly with regards to the mythos as a whole.

I don't have the emotional/nostalgia connection to comic books that many Marvel & DC fans have since most of my "superhero" consumption came via cartoons in the 60s, 70, & 90s(& later the WB animated series) One thing I always loved was the shit talking certain characters did not only to their adversaries but to each other. Wolverine & Cyclops ~chefs kiss~ Spiderman was a smartass long before Dead Pool who I've grown to adore as a character via the films. I really enjoyed the newest Suicide Squad film with Peacemaker (haven't caught his series yet) So yeah, people need to lighten up. Some of my more favorite eps of Trek & other scifi shows were the lighter hearted ones.

For the most part I've been able to embrace a similar irreverence. I enjoy the things I enjoy, and shrug off the ones I don't. I've been able to have a laugh at nostalgic properties I loved as a kid, and acknowledge the flaws in favorites while still being able to enjoy them. The few exceptions for me haven't even been centered on the media itself, but cynical jabs made directly at those who like it. One case in particular involved a YTer whose content I usually would appreciate watching calling fans of a particular movie I happened to like fools for liking it. Honestly, I have to say-that didn't sit well. However, I didn't leave a cynical comment or go on blast in the comments section of that video. I processed my disappointment over thee situation mentally, and then moved on. I have since not been able to watch any of their content moving forward, but I never made a big stink about my issue with their content.

I'm glad you went to Snyder. That's where I went immediately. This is why I can't take Snyder's Superman. TOO self serious. It's NOT for me, and I don't like the toxicity found in some fans of it. But at the end of the day, it's simply not for me. I still have Superman '78 to lovingly watch.

Heck yeah. Honestly I think Star Trek the Original Series is totally hilarious most of the time. Mostly due to the budget sets but at the same time I can marvel at what they did on a budget (while laughing at them trying to convince me a dog in a costume is an ‘alien’). One reason I like your videos is when you don’t like something it’s usually from a point if valid criticism. And you find a funny way to deliver it most of the time. I will say sometimes the line between general real annoyance and poking fun for fun sometimes confuses me with you. Especially since we aren’t friends riffing on a couch and because I have a hard time with social cues in real life. 😂 I like a gray adherence to canon, but I am not precious about it. While I don’t agree on your almost anti-canon approach SOMETIMES. What I like about you tho is that you don’t attack creators for trying to do new things or take franchises in new directions. Kurtzman isn’t the demon of creation for having some imperfect Star Trek projects and none of them are nearly as bad as Kurtzman haters make them out to be. And I don’t care what anyone says, Kurtzman era has also added a great resurgence to Trek I appreciate.

I think it's a bit of a Superman Returns situation, although to a lesser extent. Some of Incredible Hulk is definitely incompatible with Ang Lee's Hulk (how Banner gets exposed to gamma radiation, for example), but it also picks up roughly where Lee's Hulk leaves off, with Banner in South America. So, there's at least the impression of it being a sequel, even if it's actually much more of a reboot.

THIS! I don't know the best descriptor is for people with zero chill, no sense of humor and no capacity for irreverence, especially about themselves or the things they love and invariably hang their existences upon. "You can't make fun of that!" they shout. "Why not?" I calmly reply. "Because it's SACRED!" they wail. "Says who?" I query. "Says me!" they insist. "And who," I question, leaning in closer, "...are you?" I mean, honestly, if you can't laugh about a thing, you aren't examining it closely enough. And if you never question your surroundings, you can have no say in how events play out.

It's about investment and return. A change to what we know about a story or a franchise is an investment because now everyone watching and everyone writing it change their perspective. That investment from the writer also requires an investment from the viewer, and if the return isn't worth it, then both the viewer and future writers feel disrespected. It's not something to get too upset about, but it's like how Elon moved all the buttons around on Twitter. It makes people who work on Twitter have to do more cognitive work to deal with working on a new UI and it makes users have to do work to get used to it. If the changes don't work for the users and/or it doesn't help anyone working on the system, then it wasn't worth the investment of their time and the users' time. It's not something worth getting more than mildly annoyed about, but it's still a minor bit of disrespect that says, "I like it this way so everyone else has to deal with that."

11:35 - Was that a dig at Angry Joe, because that dude was furious over "Star Trek: Picard". In one of his reviews, he not only questioned the intelligence of anyone who liked it, he went as far as to outright insult them for it, even going as far as to blame them (the audience mind you) for the direction it went in.

this was a hard lesson for me to learn regarding my favorite show, Dragon Ball. not that I was made when people didn't like it - that was fine. but when stewards of the series made something "bad" and, god forbid, people liked it. infuriating! it made me miserable. am I the only person paying attention to what was good about this thing to begin with??? then I took some time away, didn't engage, and pursued interests that had fallen by the wayside. let my little autistic brain play with some new toys for awhile. and when another Dragon Ball movie was trotted out, I went and saw it. I didn't like it, but I did my duty to the series that had meant so much to me. and what stuck with me were the kids coming out, excited about what they'd just seen. that let me, finally, let that stuff go. maybe those kids will discover the version I liked and enjoy it for the same reasons, maybe they won't. but it's theirs now. my show run from 1986 to 1997, and I can watch it whenever I want. (Because I'm a grown up, now. Mostly.)

I say this as someone who learned to love literature by reading comic books as a kid: superheroes are inherently stupid. Dressing up in a costume and defeating criminals with kicks and backflips is stupid. Getting powers from radiation instead of dying horribly is stupid. Being inspired to avenge your parents' deaths by a bat flying through your window is stupid, and you know what? That's fine. As long as you realize this and place it in some context, there's nothing wrong with enjoying that stuff into adulthood. It's nice to find someone else who thinks that Ang Lee's Hulk is massively underrated (remember when Marvel was eager to experiment instead of having to sell the next five movies in the MCU?), and another one I'll stand up for is Wonder Woman 1984. Sure, its execution left something to be desired, but it really felt like a Silver Age comic come to life and I liked how gleefully it disregarded "continuity" and fanboy angst to embrace the inherent ridiculousness of a heroine in a red bustier who uses a magic lasso. These characters were created for children with the expectation they'd outgrow them in a few years and there's nothing wrong with acknowledging that, guys...
