Thanks for this video. I have this same carburetor on a string trimmer. On the metering diaphragm side, there is a brass looking part with a whole in it! Is there a PLASTIC PIECE underneath there. Accidentally poked a hole in it. Now my carburetor does not run correctly. It will run in 2nd position. Move it to 3rd and it boggs down. Than cuts off.

Which side will cause it to bog the diaphragm side or the fuel pump side ???

Two days ago I rebuild my old Russian weed eater's carburetor using your advice. I changed the diaphragm, also that thin rectangular membrane. Since the piston head was black, I had to remove carbon residues on the top of it. I had no special cleaning substances for that, so I had to improvise. I used sandpaper dipped in engine oil, then dry sandpaper, and at the end I polished the piston with a felt disk mounted in my drill machine, it surely looked better after that comparing to those small dimples left after the first stage of the cleaning. Today I put the engine back together. It starts very easy, works normally. I love it. Many thanks, Steve! ❤

I finally got my hitachi weed eater working off your primer installation video and after some new hoses and spark plug. I was thrilled to have it running after sitting for 7 years or so and then it died the next day. Watched this video, took it apart to this level, everything felt good so I cleaned it an reassembled and it’s running great again! Thank you!

Steve, I got it fixed. I removed the high speed screw and spayed with carb cleaner. I put the screw back in an once I figured out where the high speed screw should be initially set it started up fine. I dialed it into the sweet spot and it runs as good as new. I really appreciate all you videos, I wouldn’t have been able to get this fixed without them. The Great Lakes Elliot Ness beverage certainly helped.

Thanks for the video and instruction. Just did a partial re-build on a Stihl 023 chainsaw (Walbro WT 215 carb) using this video and it worked out great. The metering diaphragm did have a bit of a click to it. I don't do this often so I took lots of pictures as I went along to make sure I got things back together correctly. I also had to adjust the Low speed idle just a bit after getting things back together as I found there was too much fuel getting into the cylinder, causing my spark plug to get wet (flooded). A minor adjustment made all the difference. The chainsaw runs great now and I can sit it down and it keeps idling (yay). Love your videos and thanks again..

Thank you so much, Steve for this video! Thanks to you, I’ve been getting my small engines running without taking them to the shop. While not identical to the one in the video, I cleaned & partially rebuilt the Zama in my Homelite SXL. It’s currently my only saw & I have to cut 35 cords of firewood every year for my parents & I. Oh, did the job with Busch Light. Not much in the flavor department, but I didn’t get all buzzed up & screw up the carb either. It’s s fine line!

I just decided I'm "over" carbureted lawn equipment! I don't have any problem keeping "regular" carbs tuned and running right (I'm a trained and certified motorcycle mechanic), but for the life of me, I cannot keep this style carb running. I have a Ryobi leaf blower that starts and then shuts off right away, over and over and over again, and I have a Remington string trimmer that ran like an absolute champ with a brand-new Walbro carb on it a year ago, but now when I'm ready to use it, it also is a bear to start and won't idle. DONE! I'll keep my carbureted chainsaw, lawn mower and snowblower (for now), but from now on, as far as my other lawn equipment is concerned, it's batteries or bust! And yes, I only use ethanol-free fuel, and regarding my string trimmer, I drained the fuel and ran the carb dry when I stored it for the winter...

This is the only video this guy's made that really falls short. There's several other basic things that can be done at this point including pulling the idle and high speed adjustment screws and blasting them out with carb cleaner and poke a wire through the jet if there is one sand blow it out. If it's gummed up just replacing the diaphragms won't work.

Don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but a step ALOT of ppl miss is setting the needle valve lever. In most cases the end of the lever furthest away from the needle valve should be flush with carb chamber body. If too high will flood ...if too low will lack fuel flow.

lots of useful info in these. Been binge watching them all afternoon. Thanks! FS 250 has always been a hard starter. If it has an internal compression release, it is not working Now needs a half choke to run at full. Spark arrester? What about cleaning jets? CArb cleaner? So you prefer to exercise rather than seasonally put away drained?

Hey Steve, how's that brew? Yup, love this cutter. Thanks for the response and help. No, hadn't tried playing with the needles. This zama only has a low anyway. Spark resistor was fine. Not the problem, but the throttle cable seems to have stretched 1/8" as well. Need a new one but I shouldn't need to touch the throttle for start anyway? Noticed primer bulb in video is full. Mines not. Maybe now bigger issue. Jambed a wire down the main Walsh plug trying to clean it. Forced it into the main chamber.. Looks like my stupidity will now cost a new carb! Some sort of check valve under the Walsh? Any thoughts and any experience with a Hipa carb? $20 incl. Air filter and spark plug. Beat that. Thanks again

Thanks for all the good info you put out there. I've worked on hundreds of small engines, but have been fighting a chainsaw I bought new for a few years now. Very cold natured critter. It sat for about a year with fuel in it so I cleaned/rebuilt the carb, tank etc.(I got rid of the limiter caps too) When finished, and back together it wouldn't even pop. Watched your video on saw carb rebuild and the lightbulb came on. Switched the purge bulb lines and it started on the first pull. Thanks again!!!

Thanks for another good vid Steve. You helped me see what the mechanic I took my weedeater to screwed up. I had him clean the carb of my Stihl KM90R because the primer bulb wouldn't come back up when pressed and the motor only ran at half choke after having sat "with fuel" for more than a year and he had an ultrasonic cleaner. I had him put in a new diaphragm since the old one crinkled like yours did. Problem was he didn't have the "EXACT" diaphragm and gasket. The one he installed didn't have the tiny crossover port. I saw that mistake when I watched your video. BUT in trying to figure out the primer bulb problem in the half dark and sub freezing weather I accidentally put a screw through the diaphragm that was installed so I can't return it. New parts are ordered and when they arrive hopefully the clogged carb problem was solved by the dip in the ultrasonic cleaner. I seriously need to get one so I don't have to rely on others and any mistakes will be MY OWN. Sheesh, I shoulda had a beer BEFORE I started this repair or maybe a hot toddy to warm my numb fingers and a better light to see with.

Or you can just go on eBay, and buy a brand new carburetor. I bought one for my Stihl FS55 grass trimmer about a month ago, and it came with a new set of fuel lines, a new fuel filter, a new spark plug, two spare primer bulbs, both gaskets, and a new air filter, all for $11.98 with free shipping.

@osu67 Well, according to a quick internet search, Stihl carbs are made in China. Here's what www.b4usa.com says: STIHL Inc. Updated, July 13, 2016 by contributing editors. "Search America 1st" Always verify USA Origin Most of the STIHL products sold in the USA are made in Va. Beach, Virginia and a majority of the STIHL engines or “powerheads are built in the United States from domestic and foreign parts and components”. The carburetors are manufactured in China; STIHL purchased Zama Corporation, Ltd., Hong Kong, on December 31, 2008.

Lol I bought one. Ran like new! First yard, go to weed eat and it starts bogging down then locks up. Did it again. Had to finish the yard so went and bought a new weed eater, because I was tired of it. Come out the store and gas is pouring out of the weed eater. Apparently it got stuck open and was flooding the engine. Wound up fixing the original carb later.

Steve - I love your videos, they've got me pulling out old trimmers and chainsaws I gave up on years ago just to get them running again! I do have one question though - I have a pole chainsaw (Husqvarna 326P5 X-series) and I need to adjust the carb... should I follow the trimmer or chainsaw procedure? I'd guess the trimmer, but I'd like to be sure. I've got a Victoria Bitter and a local DuClaw's craft beer chilling just in case it gets complicated!

Particularly with the moonshine that is added to gasoline in the US, I also replace the primer bulb. I was going to use a gasoline chainsaw a few days ago, and it is fairly new, but the gas lines were brittle, along with the primer bulb looking like it would not be very long before it cracked.

I happen to disagree. You said any beer would do, but I believe if you used a thicker beer let's say, Guinness as your repair beer it would likely wind up gumming up the idle jet in 3 to 5 tanks. Otherwise, spot-on!
