I have one of these for several years and it’s brilliant. A good tip if I can share is to give the the blade 3 passes on each tooth every time you refuel and not wait until the blade is completely dull. It only takes a couple of minutes and it keeps the chain in optimal condition.

Thanks Steve watched another video that was doing a review on the device. The person demonstrating the device wasn't familiar as to why the sharpener was set to sharpen at that angle. For a homeowner that only uses a chainsaw on occasion having someone explain the how's and why's and demonstrate correct way to use the tool invaluable.

I bought one of these a few years ago and it is by far the best tool for sharpening a full chain. Before, I used that cheapie HF sharpener which has too much flex to maintain a good angle and only handles the cutter teeth. My only suggestion to those who use it, put a few blocks of wood under the power head to support it, keeps stress off the bar while in the vise and helps with getting the bar level.
@thomaslaessig96695 жыл бұрын
I've been using this sharpener for about 3 months and it's really great. Five things; 1- Use a rag, wood, or plastic in your vice to reduce damage to the bar. You can see the damage done to his bar in the video. 2- Do not sharpen a tooth that is toward the end of the saw as the blade begins to turn the corner because the guide rails will not be at the proper height. 3- I tighten the chain a little so there is less deflection as you push on the tooth and I use the chain brake then cut 3 or 4 teeth before advancing. 4-The chain is typically very sharp when your done and the depth gauge is very aggressively cut. This does create some chattering while cutting as you can see in the video of the chainsaw use. 5- He didn't cover the amount of times he files but for me it depends on the condition of the chain. Usually two passes for light touch up or 5 to 6 if you've hit a rock. Overall an absolutely terrific tool, I can't recommend it enough. Stihl all the way. Great video!!

Gotten very good at free hand filing over the years with hand eye coordination and muscle memory but getting arthritis in my fingers and this sharpening guide might be a lot easier on them. Going to give it a try. Also I noticed the instructions say to hold it at 90° but the instruction Manuals for the two Stihl saws I've had both said to hold the file 10° down which would be an 80° arc not 90. Not really a big difference.

I thought this thing was a gimmick until I bought one and used it. It does a GREAT job. I recently had my two saws out and one had a brand new chain, the other had one sharpened with this thing. I couldn't tell the difference.

I have used my sharpener for a year now on my main saw, an Echo, I swear by this sharpener. I just purchased a second sharpener for my backup saw a Jonsered. I live on 40 acres of hardwood and burn for heat. Excellent invention/helper.

So this will work with any brand chain? I have one of the cheap ms170 sthil chainsaw and it wont take any chain other than the sthil... I am currently in the market for another chainsaw

What type of chain? I have the 93 link Oregon that came with my Echo and its 3/8 and 7/32 files. 7/32 does not fit in this device.

Steve, your guide really helped, I've had one of these for years and hadn't been using it correctly. I followed your guide and my chainsaw worked well. Thanks.

I have two of these sharpeners. One for my MS170 and the other for my MS390. In the early 1970s, when I worked for Crownzellerbach in the Kitimat Valley, I used just a round file, flat file, and a raker guage. These new sharpeners are the way to go.

Thank you very informative, like the detailed shots. Are the knockoffs sharpeners($11 to $17) any good? If so what details to look for?

Thanks for the video. Just picked up 2 in 1. I don’t know that I totally agree with you on the directions. I thought they were pretty poor for someone who has never sharpened a chain. I had it pretty much figured out and your video was a big help. Just from playing around with I think putting in a vice is a big help. Thumbs up and Thanks again!

I had this sharpener for 2 years; best one I'VE used. I go back afterwards and use a flat file on the depth gauges again for that noodle effect. Be careful, the saw really grabs.

Right on John! Thank You...
@jasonbusch36245 жыл бұрын
I like it because it doesn't take your rakers down too far. If you take the rakers down too far you will loose chain speed and actually cut slower because it is bogging the saw down because it is grabbing too hard on the wood.

Same here. Just bought my first chainsaw last weekend, a Stihl MS-271 Farm Boss. Got a few downed trees that need clearing and thought, if I'm going to spend hundreds of dollars on a chainsaw, I want one I can depend on. The dealer didn't have a 2 in 1 in .325 for my saw but I'll be checking a different dealer in the next few days.

@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Steve, I've been using one of these and it seems to work pretty well. I was using it with a Stihl chain. But, now I bought some Oregon chains. Same sizing and everything. I haven't tried it yet, but, I guess, I should still be able to use the Stihl chain sharpener with a different brand chain? I think on my last Stihl chain I wasn't pressing down hard enough on the flat file that lowers the depth.

Steve, I have really enjoyed many of your videos. You are a good communicator, direct, and comprehensive. No B.S. I bought and used this sharpener today, THEN I watched this video. Thank you for taking the time to show that sharpener. Will buy it. I have a question about operation. When I use my saw, 50: 1 oil to fuel mix, i get a half hour out if it running then it boggs down. No smoke coming out exhaust, could it be running lean and getting hot?

Hey Steve, greetings from Oklahoma. I'm a sevice tech for an echo dealership and I have a video topic suggestion. How about doing a video on reringing a 2 stroke engine like a weed eater? I see a lot of weed waters and other 2 stroke engines that could be saved by throwing a set of piston rings in but service cost being what they are at most shops that's cost prohibitive for the average home owner. Jimmy Jones
@Nudnik15 жыл бұрын
Echo excellent stuff. Saws good for money start easy cut good .
@jasonbusch36245 жыл бұрын
Usually the cylinders are scored so throwing rings in a scored plated cylinder is not worth the time or money.
