Check out this easy solution if you accidentally filled your chainsaw fuel tank with bar and chain oil.
How many time have I heard "my wife accidentally put oil in the gas tank". Okay guys, I know it was you and you don't need to be embarrassed. And it's not the damn kids either! ;-)
This is an extremely common problem that happens when you are not familiar with a chainsaw or just haven't used one in a while. I see this in the shop more often than you think.
This video is how to correct the mistake and get back to cutting firewood.
The chainsaw in the video is a Stihl MS170 Chainsaw.

I do my best to teach you how I easily diagnose problems the fastest, quickest and most efficient way.
Whether it be a handheld, two stroke, two cycle engine like chainsaws, weed eaters, string trimmers, grass trimmers, line trimmers, hedge trimmers, strimmers, brush cutters, leaf blowers, or four stroke, four cycle units like lawn mowers, pressure washers, generators, ride on mowers that need parts installed or replaced, I’m your guy.

My dad has degenerative disk disease and I'm looking for a lightweight saw he can use since he refuses to quit cutting, any suggestions he prefers Stihl but he's not buying i am lol. Cutting brush and wood around 8-10" or so around $400 to spend. Any suggestions would be helpful thank you, I enjoy your videos 👍

God Bless You Steve I'm new to the chainsaw world. I have a little Remington 14-in and I don't know how the hell I did it. I did exactly that, I put the Oil in the Gas and the Gas in the Oil. A Bright Orange Cap. I don't know why my mind Registered Oil. Down in my basement, I took a real strong flash light and there it is. It says Fuel: Oil Mix. That could have been What My Mind's Eye Saw Oil 🤔😬 I tried everything to get it started checking the spark plug filter nothing. Then I remembered. I marked your video down in watch later and sure enough the filter inside the gas, is what made my mind click. I said why doesn't that other one have a filter? Then that's when it hit me and I came to the strong flashlight. You put my mind at ease though and I'm hoping for the best cuz this is a brand new chainsaw. When you said listen guys you didn't mess up your motor. For the past couple of days prior to realizing this I've been tipping it up in different angles trying to get the fluid to run out and the little bulb also would fill up so I push on that and it would make a puffy sound spitting out oil. I'm not sure if the lines are cleared out or if the carburetor still has oil in it not sure if I should just fill it up with gas and chain oil and go out and try to see if it will just start up. Or should I just go ahead and pull the filter out and do as you suggested. Be nice if I got an instant reply Thank You Again

I sure wish I’d seen this one when I put the oil in the fuel tank of my one month old Stihl chainsaw. I was sure I’d killed it but knew if I took it to the shop I’d not see it again for maybe months. I took it all apart, down past the carb, splitting the fuel line in the process. After ordering and waiting for a new line and filter for a week I was able to get it up and running. But, oh shit!, was I freaked out that I’d killed a brand new machine! Your videos are so much fun and so helpful, Steve! Great stuff! Thanks so much! Joe Jovanovich in Eastern Washington.

I filled my stihls gas tank with chain oil a few months ago, a mile into the woods, I was fortunate enough to realize this as the oil just reached the top of the tank. I just turned it upside-down dumped it all out added a small amount of gas shook it like a sparypaint can dumped it again filled it with gas and saved my day. On a side note I did not know you were from Vancouver Island, and didn't catch your accent, but that's all I can hear now.

Had a brand new MS180 come back to the store with this exact scenario a few days ago! One tank of work done then refilled and got them mixed up. Checked your videos for this topic and of course you covered it! Was great to know I was correct in assuming it would be fine if I could get it cleaned out enough. Flushed the fuel tank, new fuel filter and flushed the line with carb cleaner first and then tried starting. No luck at first so shot some starting fluid down the carb and got it to start running for very short periods with throttle full open and normal run position on the choke setting. Repeated for a while but would only get a couple seconds of running. So to make it a little easier and to free up a hand I taped the trigger down so the throttle was kept open and once I got it to run after priming with starting fluid I was able to pick up the can quickly and keep squirting starting fluid in the carb to keep it running until it finally cleared out and ran at top speed. I of course then shut it off and removed the tape on the trigger and the next start it was running like new; with a little white smoke of course. Thanks Steve!

Second I will tell you the story I’ve been running the chainsaw all day and I’m completely exhausted and I’m thinking about the next set of very complicated cuts I need to make and I set my chainsaw down in a different direction than I normally do. I put fuel where it shouldn’t be an oil where it shouldn’t be. Fortunately I realized after trying to start it what I had done and immediately dumped both put gas in the gas tank switched it around and dumped it and then started it. All better now.

This is horseshit. I use a small Dolmar and on some rare occasions i need a bigger saw with a longer blade for the particular job. So i go and borrow a bigger saw from a buddy. What´s the big deal. Buy a 800€ saw for a job i need to do maybe once a year? Right. Horseshit. edit: I´ll grant you that saws are a different type of beast than sth like a lawn mower or a strimmer and should only be used under guidance/supervision in the beginning.

Steve, thanks for your clips much better than the owners manuals. I was a fire dept. mechanic for 31 years we had many small engines two and four cycle. We had both mix and straight gas cans on the trucks. When the fire fighters weren't looking I would mix Amsoil 100/1 in the straight gas cans, if they dumped it in the saws and jaws no harm done . A little synthetic mix oil is good for air cooled engines as they tend to run hot and dry in the head. Keep up the good work and libation.

Yup, oil in the gas tank and gas in the oil tank. Man, this makes me feel so much better knowing I'm not the only dummy who ever did this. My mistake was asking my brother in law to look my saw over to see if he could figure out why it wouldn't run. The end result was much mirth at my expense. Not likely to live that one down in this lifetime.

Lol I really enjoy watching your videos. You’ve inspired me to rebuild my ms 260 myself. I bought a pressure vacuume tester and after I build a couple plates to block of my muffler port and the carberator I’ll vacuume and pressure test it and if that all passes I’ll start the rebuild🙂 It would be great if you ever deside to do a piston and. Cylinder replacement video. Thanks for all the great knowledgeable videos. I love the no nonsense get to it approach you have. Cheers 🍺

Steve...You may want to add a half ounce of Mechanic in a Bottle to the fuel just to make sure the carb is really clean. I am always amazed at how that stuff works on my kids' two- and four-stroke engines that they can't get to run right. Keep up the informative videos.

Great money saver. I was happy to hear you say, that maybe it was on purpose, something I have long suspected, also. It is just to plain simple , to be a accident. Especially on cars and trucks, when they have been making the bodies so many years. They know exactly where it is going to catch mud and water , then rust out . Then so many people, will trade in on a new one, a few years earlier than planned .

Amazing video. Steve is so cool. If I lived in Vancouver I would apply for a job there. I was day dreaming and put some 4 stroke oil in the gas tank. I topped off the tank with fuel to dilute the oil but no luck. It's still a bit cold here in Boston so that may be part of my problem. Come the weekend I will drain the fuel tank and float bowl and give it a go. BTW I agree with Gilitar's comment from last year.

Howdy Mr. Steve & fellow followers. Here goes my unsolicited tip that has precluded me from making that mistake. Since I have a myriad of different chainsaws in my arsenal (stihl x2, husqvarna x3, "crapsman" x2, "pull-on" x1 & a homelight).... what I do is occasionally get a black sharpee marker & rehighlight the faded raised Braille like markings that indicate fuel+oil & bar oil. This may come in handy for those that allow their saws to be loaned out. "Ounce of prevention is worth a pund of cure". As always, LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. CHEERS. Southern Maryland out.

I'm having a hard time believing someone could reverse the oil+gas tanks when filling up but hey, looks like it does happen. I'm not without blame, I once grabbed the wrong bottle and mixed bar oil with my gas. Ran a full tank through the weedeater and realized my goof when I walked into the garage and saw the bottle of bar oil on the bench. Keep up the good work. 👌😀

I did that once to my Echo chainsaw. The tanks are situated opposite of most chainsaws I've owned. Once I realized my mistake I just rinsed out the tank with gas after I drained the oil out and refilled it. Luckily it started right up. I've never made that mistake again!
