I always found that the one with the grounded pinky was most effective for me. If I keep the pinky grounded on the body below the strings, I can just use muscle memory to make sure I'm picking the right string without having to watch my right hand. The pick gets held like Cartman's Jennifer Lopez and the middle and ring just fend for themselves. I've been told it's weird, but it just works.
@thecommenter92673 жыл бұрын
Most people don't know this but one of the key factors that makes Marty's sound unique is his strange right hand. The flexed curvature is basically a modified form of the rare Gypsy Jazz style picking, which was invented to create a louder, more aggressive pick attack. He leverages a massive downward pickslant and uses circular thumb picking to get around the string change issue (for example when the pick is below the string and he needs to move to the string above). You can't reach as much consistent speed output with Gypsy style picking as you can with traditional picking but you get MUCH more power. Think of it like the difference between an AK47 and a metronome. AK47 shoots extra fast and clean in short bursts but then soon gets out of control if you keep shooting without rest, but the sound is dynamic and powerful while a metronome maintains consistent high speed, but the sound is rather weak and mechanical.

A lot of players change up their grip depending on what they're playing at the time. They might have one technique for playing string-skipping arpeggios and another for shredding. The right way is whatever works for you.
@evilcowboy4 жыл бұрын
@@tantrispicks2440 What this guy said is right. Personally I play sweep picking with the pick directly pointed towards the body of the guitar and use a .056 pick. If I need the pick to be sturdy I choke the pick to barely a tip. The reason I use that thin of a pick and point it towards the strings is because it provides the most clarity, the pick is thin enough to just flop off the string to the next one. If you're gonna slowly strum a chord then it makes sense to use the same type of pick you would when strumming a chord and thin picks are popular among chord strummers. The thin pick coupled with a picking style like Steve Morse is just a great way of gaining speed. I naturally pick like Steve Morse so I get why he picks that way.

He was always up there, but I always thought of Kerry King from Slayer back in his prime as the "King of Downpicking" to be honest, lol. And yea, downpicking is definitely useful to aggressive riffs, but there's no need for you to also hold the pick in the screwed up way Hetfield does (unless it's weirdly comfortable for you.) Might as well learn with the proper way of holding the pick, and then practice your downpicking ;)

LOL I knew both EVH (for his tremolo picking technique) and Marty Friedman would be on this list. I have to wonder how Marty keeps string noise down (that is, muting unwanted strings), since most guitarists use both hands for that... it must all come from the left hand.

Synyster gates changed his picking technique 6 years ago from now when he started playing Gypsy jazz, he told this to his Synyster gates school website. That he needed a much stronger picking technique that's why he changed his technique. And Steve as far as I know, in one Interview with Troy Grady on his channel Batio said that he was actually left handed when he used to play piano, so at the time when he was learning guitar all by himself on Chicago there wasn't any left handed guitar and wouldn't want to play a right handed guitar upside down so he decided to play right handed and just because he is left handed he just locks his right hand and flick it anyway to control is as best as possible.
@Yuki-oi1cs2 жыл бұрын
That's right, Michael Angelo Batio said himself that it's pretty odd for him to play like a right handed as a left handed, but I gotta say I do the same thing ( also because I don't have a left handed guitar ) also self-taught since he started, and now he's known as the man with the double guitar and the fastest guitar player in the world. Also I wonder what's the name of the music used when Stevie introduced him in the video. Do you know it? :)

Half-same...Finding this video just now had me think about it for the first time...I also hold with three fingers but at the same time its also somewhere in between tosin abasi and marty friedmans technique. Where my arm isnt swooping down nearly as much as marty's but i angle my thumb more than him to compensate, just not anywhere near as harsh an angle as tosin lol...like right halfway in between their techniques, with 3 fingers like hetfield...so i guess its angled backwards compared to most peoples forward slicing..as for holding it with 3 fingers, the middle is like extra support for the pointer finger so that the pick doesn't move and so i can pick harder Sucks though cause i heard that angling the pick backwards like that instead of slicing forwards, makes for a less "djenty" sound and more effort required for fast tremelo picking, and that 3 fingers also hinders speed compared to 2 fingers somehow. But at least hetfield can reassure me on the 3 finger thing, and i just realized that backwards angled pick is the perfect funk strumming technique anyways and tbh i used to play a lot of funk when i started out on guitar idk why i just did. Maybe thats where Tosin got it from too, since he's pretty funky. Noticed that when watching Vulfpecks madison square garden thing - that pick angle just makes things chop hard even on upstrokes (which i use a ton unlike hetfield), like a funky machine

He also has a weird technique while tapping and soloing, you can check it out in the "Don't Stop Me Now" video, in the "Resurrection" video from Brian May's KZbin channel or in the instructional video where he teaches how to play "It's Late" it is uploaded either yo his KZbin channel or Queen's channel… Also you all should check out Brian May's "Cyborg", it features a lot of tapping and all of the singing is him as well…

I ALWAYS tell my students, “this is just a guideline, everyone’s hands are different, and you will find what works best for you by exploring different forms for different sequences and passages you are playing” then I proceed to show them cracking the code for examples. I lastly mention that Jason Richardson’s guide to picking hand muting is basically the best possible lol.

Not sure if my technique is "weird", but I've always preferred the hybrid picking grip when playing guitar, even before I actually started using it as a technique. I was always a fan of folk fingerpicking, though (one of my all time favourite tracks is actually "Streets of London" by Ralph McTell, believe it or not), and still quite enjoyed putting my pick down to fingerpick, so this one does make a lot more sense if you view me as a fingerpicking guitarist who also uses a pick instead of a pick player!
