I was describing this song to someone about a month ago and they told me that it was "Call on Me" by Eric Prydz. I went to listen to that and I was like, "Yeah, I guess this is it but I thought it had more lyrics. Guess I was wrong." Then today I just happened to come across this and instantly knew this was the song I was actually looking for! So glad I found this version. At least I can watch this video at work (unlike Prydz's remix)! LOL

I spent years looking for this song. Heard it on a classic rock station, never remembered the song name/lyrics or artist. Got the record that it was on from my mom in February, put it on said album a few nights ago and jumped for joy in front of my roommate who thought I went nuts when it started playing. "Dude! Why you freaking out?" "I've been looking for this song for over 15 years since I heard it when I was 16" (just turned 32 on Sunday) I called my music friends who I use to track down certain songs, screaming "I'm not crazy! I found it! It's called "Valerie" by Steve Winwood. I knew it existed!" It's the little things in life like these moments I enjoy the most.

@@boerebru If you had said "Well Eric Prydz sampled this song for Call on me" I wouldn't have said anything. "Used his voice" sounds pretty ambiguous to me. His voice wasn't some ancillary instrument on the track, it's the entire song. Plus it wasn't originally Eric's song -- he took a Daft Punk members DJ loop and got the rights to do a full arrangement and had to re-do the song because he couldn't get rights for the Master. So when you say use his voice, I think you're glossing over a bunch of stuff.

Eric Prydz sampling this was genius because this song is epic
@ShadowSliph7 ай бұрын
Fun fact, he didn’t actually come up with that sample, it was Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk fame. Bangalter and DJ Falcon had a duo act called Together and they played it during a live set, a recording of which had gotten around in DJ circles. Ministry of Sound knew about it and wanted to release it because it’d be a huge hit but the duo said no, mainly because they hadn’t cleared the sample. So MoS basically plucked Prydz from their stable and said “remake this”, then got Winwood in to re-record the song because he didn’t own the masters anymore. Prydz has since come out and said he hates the song because it’s all he’s known for now and it’s not at all his sound.

Have you heard the songs he sang on with the Spencer Davis Group, in the 60s, they make you feel good. The same can be said, for the songs he wrote with Traffic too. In fact they make you feel really good. 😉
@crimfan3 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it's "feel good" exactly. I guess it could be, but the song is about the late Valerie Carter, who had a serious drug problem and was very much a tragic figure on the LA music scene of the time.

why don't we have good songs like this anymore? i'm dead tired of hearing about drinking, cars, money, sex and whatnot. i love their beats and music (sometimes) but the content is old. We need more guys like John Lennon, Steve Winwood, and other greats from the old days around. back when love was from the heart and wasn't synonymous sex (as far as today's music goes). i know some songs by today's artists are good like this but we need more.
@rickesh2810 жыл бұрын
You can't generalise music like that. According to you, music now has all these references to alcohol, money and sex, but you're forgetting that music has ALWAYS had references to all of these. Go ahead and tell me that John Lennon NEVER wrote a song about sex, or drinking, or drugs for that matter...
@TheKisame80810 жыл бұрын

***** Don't go on about the 'wrong generation' shit I am only 36!! I have listened to a lot of modern music actually and whilst there are some that don't mention money, sex or drugs, they are very few and far between! I appreciate people who are able to write their own music and do it well like Adele, not people who just produce random noises from a synthesizer that is on a loop! There is nothing remotely musical about that!
@Ineddiblehulk7 жыл бұрын
Oh FFS really? "Music was better in my day". You should be embarrassed spurting such cliched claptrap with a straight face. Even Alvin and the Chipmunks, the animated series, pointed out the moronic hypocrisy of this sentiment in the 80's and that is HARDLY a bastion of social criticism. If you think music today is rubbish, that says more about you than music; you're not looking hard enough (read 'at all') and you mistake music that 'you like' as the only material with merit. Neither make for a very robust opinion.

I heard this song this morning on the local FM station. I had to look it up on KZbin. What a great example of the perfect Pop song and song smithing. So crafty and simple and right to the point.The video is so simple and really gets to the point of Steve’s great talent and the way he developed his voice and approach. Just a normal guy dreaming about a girl back when things were simpler. I think that pretty much came to an end in the 80s,Period.a great song is timeless. Steve isn’t on my radar, and with the venues I listen to he doesn’t seem to come up much. It improved my morning, for the moment, and I just wanna thank Steve Winwood for his efforts! Also to the people who post great music and artists. I see great musical artists as the unsung heroes, I’m sure their parents wanted them to become lawyers or doctors. But they follow their hearts and make our moments in life sustainable.❤
