"I didn't win or lose, I just threw the cards But I paid a price for it" Incredible lyricism. The haunt of regret keeps me up at night as well, so this song is relatable to many

Doing The Best I Can (Escape From Berlin) in my opinion is one of the most powerful songs ever written. In the lyrics of this song you can really hear Stevie's emotions and heartbreak.

Yep, Have "Been Down" with The Real it y, of that one since that first was put out. Too many times., Been Down That Road. Yet, Makes A/One person STRONGER, With the Help Of God, Somehow, We'll ALL "Get Bye". "It's Baby"....

That's why her music is so poetic and deep. She is really so sad.. She appears to be so much happier in 2011 with her new music. She is the best!

Her voice is usually a bit rough when she's at the piano because she concentrates so hard, but she's so, so strong here. Chilling and stunning.

I wish this version had been on TOSOTM and released as a single in 1989/90. I hope the remaster of this album will include this live version as a bonus track.

AnthonyKZbinFan I wonder if since it had “Escape From Berlin” in the title if the label considered releasing this as a single in late ‘89/early ‘90 after the Berlin Wall fell to capitalize on the zeitgeist

sefrims1 this is legit but the song is definitely about how she really is just trying to live as a good person but she has made mistakes while continuing to try to change them all the time and people are just trying to lead her life for her. You can tell she has encountered things like depression and anxiety, through the lyrics

I think this is a good song to relate to fathers day. Our society does not give enough respect for the man dad's who even with their imperfections do the best they can to provide for others. This applies to men who have kids and even those who do not bur have done the best they could as brothers, friends, and just being in society and paying more than their share in time and effort.

It was one for you...it was three for me It was very nice...it was everything So here it is...in little pieces... I just played the part...I didn't win or lose Maybe next time I'll think about how I'm feeling... "Cause I'm doing the best that I can And the whispered secrets...go on and on No one says anything to anyone You watch after her...and your word is law She thought she was out there...but nobody saw I didn't win or lose...I just threw the cards But I paid a price for it... And it's alright, baby...I'm doing the best that I can And I'm trying hard to change...I'm doing it the best that I can Well because fate causes fortune and fortune takes it away Well it's alright, baby...I'm doing the best that I can I was silent...I was locked away But I covered my tears... Silent all day It's out of my hands here In my distress...well I wanted someone to blame me In my devastation...I wanted so to change In my way...disaster was the only thing that I could depend on... But it's alright, baby...I'm doing the best that I can Yes it's alright, baby...I'm doing the best that I can Because fate causes fortune and fortune takes it away And then fortune causes nightmares...nightmares that make you crazy It's alright, baby...I'm doing the best that I can It's alright, baby...I'm doing the best that I can Oh he says, "Well I hear you're doing fine and you're doing the best that you can." Well he says, "Oh, I hear you're doing fine and you're doing the best that you can." Ooh she says, "It's alright, baby...I'm doing the best that I can." Yes it's alright, baby...I'm doing the best that I can Oh and he says, "I hear you're doing fine and you're doing it the best that you can." Oh and he says, "Ooh I hear she's doing fine and she's doing it the best that she can." Oh and I paid a price for it... I'm doing the best that I can...

OSOTM could have been truly genius - instead of just the garden variety genius - if Rupert Hine hadn't produced it . This version and the acoustic Unconditional Love are vast improvements over the album versions. And I like that Sharon is still recognizable as Sharon in this video.
