Lately is one of the most beautiful ballads ever written by Stevie Wonder. With just piano chords and bass synth backing a vocal of unsurpassed emotional power, it tells the story of a love he feels is dying but just wishes his premonitions miss. Musically, Wonder uses minor 7th, 9th, and 11th chords to make the song sound more heart-wrenching and sad. The sudden crescendo and shift in key that accompany the final chorus repeat are just heart-rending. It finally ends in yet another minor key, leaving the listener wondering if the inevitable breakup of the couple has occurred or if the lover singing the song has decided to stick it out, suffer, and go on.

Stevie Wonder is a musical prodigy. I look up to him so much because of his range and power, especially in this song is so beautiful. Lately is one of my favorite songs by Stevie and I’m so happy you reacted to him. I agree with everything you said. *He did all of that and he can’t even see!* 😂

I was a closet Stevie Wonder fanatic when I was around 10 when this song came out. I hid it from my friends since none of them ever talked about Stevie Wonder, so I assumed it was uncool to be listening to him, but at home I loved listening to Stevie for hours on end. It was only years later when I started to by CD's and they still had extensive notes in the CD package that I started reading that many of the R&B singers gave Stevie Wonder as one of their main influences. That enabled me to open up about it because I realized he was admired by so many people who were making music that I enjoyed. A note about Stevie singing live; although I love Stevie's studio albums, to me, there is something special about when he sings live, it's like he ad-libs even more and comes out with these heavenly things that sometimes seem to surpass his studio singing. It's great to see young guys like yourself enjoying this music and I think you're helping to bring people of different generations together by what you do. Also it was enjoyable hearing your assessment of his 'storytelling' and how the music moves harmonically. Very engaging reaction video.

You’re my favorite reactor for my fave artists. I’m part of Gen X and love the songs I grew up with. Apart from melody. the lyrics is something I dig. Songwriting is an art and when combined with that melody and musicality of Stevie, wow it’s perfect.
