Several years ago,one of the popular magazines had a article which stated that drum brakes were as good as disc. The problem was that the drums were sealed and heat was the problem. By drilling vent holes in face of drum between studs drums they were nearly as good as disc, and a lot cheaper. Nothing against throwing money at cars. But anyone with deep pockets can go fast or stop fast . Hot rodding is going fast cheaply.

Agreed 👍 If you slam on the brakes. Unless something is not adjusted. They do jam. As teenagers we experiment 😉. What does not work. Is front drum brakes with a little water. Rain. Or snow being the worst..Just do not get in the way. No matter how much you pressure your brake pedal. You will not STOP.

These are memories for me as I did the almost exact same thing to my 1978 Z28 using Eldorado calipers and brackets with Trans Am rotors in the late '80's. Did the kit come with a master cylinder and proportioning valve? The MC is necessary as the volume of fluid to the rear brakes is much increased and I remember I had to swap it out. The PV was also different. The parking brake was a bitch to get working right and also had to replace the cables. That car is long gone now. I miss it :-(

Unless you want cosmetic appearance I wouldnt waste good money on rear-disc conversion. For one thing most of the braking power, like 80% of it comes from the front, so a nice quality, larger diameter, 6-piston up front will do most of the work, then to spend that same money and time for the rear which isnt used as much isnt a great idea. Also you can run line-lock on old cars with front disc and rear drums for Easy burn outs.

The reason GM stopped using these brakes is the requirement for constant adjustment of the e-brake. If this is not done; which Cadilac owners never did, as they bought a caddy thinking it was maintenance free (Chevy Caprice owners, or the Caddy at one third the price, since it is the same B-body behind the grill without the added trim, owners realized that maintenance is required; such as changing engine oil and filters). If not adjusted to compensate for pad wear it results in complete loss of rear brake function and your pedal dropping constantly as you try and stop the car only using your front brakes. Big Dave

Did you not have to change the propotioner valve ?
@Thundarr9954 жыл бұрын
You do have to change your proportioning valve. Or some GM vehicles you're supposed to get a master cylinder from a vehicle that has rear disc brakes. Disk brakes require more fluid and higher pressures to work properly. Nobody ever mentions this,they're actually down grading their braking power without changing those parts also. Sometimes you only need to change a spring in the proportioning valve to vehicle that originally came with rear disc brakes. If the car has antilock brakes,this can open a whole can of worms. The brakes might be ok,but then the antilock brake light won't turn off. My friend did this to his Explorer and it eats front brake pads and rotors. I drove it and I think his brakes suck. I put slotted drilled rotors and carbon ceramic pads on mine,drum in the back,ceramic shoes. Mine stops on a dime and no issues. I wouldn't waste my money on this stuff. It ain't gonna stop you much faster anyway. Just because it's aftermarket doesn't necessarily mean it's better than stock. There's plenty of cheap Chinese aftermarket stuff out there that is....well it's not very good. Sometimes it doesn't even fit,or work for that matter. Sometimes it's made from inferior grade metal. Grab a Chinese brake rotor in one hand and a factory on for the same car in the other. 9 times out of 10 the factory ones are heavier. They're made of better iron and they last longer. I'm not familiar with the brand this guy is using. If it's cheaper,it's probably junk and the stock drum brakes are better.
@rick3434 жыл бұрын
@@Thundarr995 totally agree, I was just wondering why he didn't mention it, I own a 93 K1500 has drums on the back and I'm perfectly happy with them, I make sure the wheel cylinders are good and clean and everything is adjusted right and it stops great, I will probably never get rid of it so I enjoy keeping it going strong.

Also put a 99 NVG 3500 transmission in it. Its heavier duty than the 97 NVG 3500. Put 3.42 gears and a Zexel Torsen posi-tracion carrier from a Z-28 in the rear axle. @indykartsindoorgokarting67112 жыл бұрын
It depends on the car; weight, wheelbase, height, centre of gravity and weight transfer when braking all make huge differences. Rear or mid engined sports cars for example will have a about a 50/50 split front to rear for brake performance. An old big block Camaro or a standard FWD small car will have about a 90/10 split in an emergency stop however an old Cadillac Limousine will have about a 60/40 split because of the lack of weight transfer do to the extra length of the limousine. To give you an example of how extreme the weight transfer can be the 1970 V8 Holden Monaro 2 door (an Australian built RHD version of the Camaro with a different body) would lift it's rear wheels completely off the ground during emergency stops! a 100/0 split!

What did you do about an emergency brake replacement?
@averagedadsgarage3 жыл бұрын
These calipers have a built in e-brake. And this kit came with cables that replaced the factory ones on my 68 LeMans.

@@averagedadsgarage do you have the link for ebay? I'm on Vancouver Island so wanna minimize shipping lol
@averagedadsgarage3 жыл бұрын
The seller was Pirate Jack. Not sure what all he has listed on eBay right now. There is a link to their website in the description. There are other companies that sell very similar kits. It’s a popular caliper and rotor used in older swaps, so you may find similar kits sold by other companies.

Yes.

Great video! I am curious- did the wheel mounting surface move either inward or outward with this swap? Or is it in the same exact location?
@averagedadsgarage4 жыл бұрын
Roger Jackson Almost exactly the same. Maybe an 1/8 of an inch outward. The thickness of the rotor on the hub face is slightly thicker than the drum.

Question?? Did u upgrade the front brakes ? If so did u have to do anything to front end??

88 Classic I did upgrade the front brakes. After doing a CPP big brake kit, I changed out my master cylinder and proportioning valve to a wilwood.

@@averagedadsgarage so the brake caliper on the front in this video is stock? Only asking bc i wanna go from one piston to two piston brake calipers.. I see u have two piston brake calipers on the front..

88 Classic The front is not stock. In one of my other videos, I did a c5 brake kit. I had a factory single piston caliper set up in there prior to that.

Can you run a 15 inch wheel??
@averagedadsgarage2 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure you can. I think they’re the same size rotor I use to run on the front, and I had 15" rims back then.

Hey brother , quick question when changing drums to disc do you need a power brake booster. Or can I still use the stock one in my car
@welcome2cali9464 жыл бұрын
I need to kmow also
@Karkmotuning4 жыл бұрын
Yea you probably will need a brake booster, disc brakes generally need a bit higher pressure for the same amont of brake force. Not often you see disc brske cars without a brake booster.
@1967davethewave4 жыл бұрын
If your car already has power brakes the booster should be adequate. I have seen front disc/rear drum cars that weren't power and they work fair. I've never seen 4 wheel discs that weren't power and I would think you would need Arnold legs to make them stop. The cheapest way to get power brakes if your car doesn't have them is to buy a factory style booster.
@pgboyinthehouse90414 жыл бұрын
You would need a larger bore size master cylinder. You can do some home and find a factory one that will do the job and may bolt right in. I have a 1974 corvette factory manual 4 wheel disc brakes . It stops pretty well. However I would just buy a factory booster lime others have suggested. Other option would be aftermarket Master Cylinder from someone like Wilwood. They offer quite a few options in power and manual version for disc brake conversions . Hope that helps.
@holmes1956O4 жыл бұрын
Karkmotuning ah ya race cars. You can go in 2 different directions. You can power booster it or go with a different master cylinder to give the pressure and volume to suit the brake caliper size. A proportioning valve between the master and rear brakes is also a good idea
