Mike, I look at that engine and prop and images of Road Runner cartoons of my youth come to mind as this airplane build reminds me of something that Wile E. Coyote would dream up to catch that bird. In the cartoon taking shape in my mind the engine revs up, the brakes are released, and the fuselage takes off like a shot and leaves the wings behind. Nothing ever worked correctly for that coyote.

Fabric has been in aircraft construction from the absolute beginning. Aren’t there more advanced material options for this purpose? What’s the advantage of fabric over other material options....weight? What are the disadvantages of utilizing fabric as a choice for this particular project?

Fabric on control surfaces is lighter, and makes it easier to balance them....that's why it was used on planes like the Corsair with 4 times the power of Scrappy. It is also fairly easy to work with, and can't be beat for going around compound curves. Linen and cotton was used in older times, but they are likely using a synthetic fabric.......

About how much does the fabric shrink and does it become brittle if you screw up and overheat an area ? Thanks
@StewartSystems4 жыл бұрын
The fabric will shrink approximately 10%. If the fabric is heated over 375°F it will crystallize and it will not have memory. In other words if the airframe shrinks because of a temperature change the fabric will not. It will become loose. It is very important to never heat the fabric over 350°

i want to know if 2 layers of medium would have been better if the under layer was installed on a bias.. if that might add to the final strength of the cloth coverings.
@StewartSystems4 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting question. I think in some ways it might. But it would be difficult to test. When we test the fabric for strength we do it was a pool tester. We would normally pull it straight in line with the weave. The way we are doing it now we would be pulling two layers of fabric in line with the weave. If we did one on a bias I think a conventional protest would probably show it weaker. But in the real world it might actually be so much stronger overall. But the reality is that two layers of medium fabric is so ridiculously strong it’s kind of a moot point.

@@StewartSystems thanks. I take it that you know mikey and Joe up at buffalo are starting to build new wings for a replica DR 1 and a Fox Moth . There was a great video of a brand new jetliner doing cold weather certs at -47C. When the new jet was ready to take off. They had to wait for a 70+ year old Curtis C46 to land from its daily cargo flights no matter what the temp is.

Design change: build in air breaks. 2 seconds before Scrappy touches down at the end of a run, cut power and pop the air breaks. It should reduce turnaround time by 20% +-
@ericlayton64 жыл бұрын
That prop is all the air break he’ll need
@richbuckley69174 жыл бұрын
Eric Layton Yah, you’re probably right about that. Besides, I can’t think of a light weight easy to operate airbrake. All together the upper and lower air break would end up being way smaller than the fixed prop brought back on rpm.
@jamesburleson19164 жыл бұрын
@@richbuckley6917 There's also the bit where the plane is designed to stall at ~30mph, and air brakes are not terribly effective at those speeds. They work great at higher speeds, but it's sort of an exponential, and 30mph is on the flatter end.
