As someone who has many years experience with repairing and major overhauls of Boeing aircraft, and dealing with stacks of shims that Boeing used in areas like the structure surrounding the S duct on a 727, to make up for large tolerances in fitment, makes witnessing of the precision and exacting tolerances achieved by Mike Patey, all the more impressive! I am completely blown away by Scrappy. We are witnessing unequaled engineering prowess. I eagerly await each and every video.

@MrJaiimez 3 жыл бұрын
I think the thing to remember is Mike is building this without a real timeframe or budget, public companies are under alot for time and budget pressure. Not saying it justifys their failings sometimes, but I'm sure alot of engineers at Boeing, ect, would love to deal with this kind of precision but the finance guys would rather have looser tolerances in favour of being able to produce an extra part per hour ect.
@wrstew1272
@wrstew1272 3 жыл бұрын
@@MrJaiimez I wish that your statement were true, but do bean counters really designate quality in engineering? Granted that Mike controls when parts are made, choosing temp etc., but surely the biggest guys can temperature control the machining areas, and subassembly areas. You just have to specify requirements. He does, they don’t. Simple? Timeframe? Budget? As if Boeing or Airbus are pressed for either as it takes years to design and tool to build aircraft. They neither lack either. Mike worked his ass off and created products that were needed, built a business that obviously builds quality products, priced accordingly, and continues doing the same. The twins have a booming business that can’t keep up with orders. Then he does super engineering and manufacturing after work and weekends to design and assemble a excellent prototype of a world class experimental aircraft. The biggest guys might, but not at the profit margins required. My 2 cents worth.

I get what you're saying about 'the whole world moves forward' - the big companies can't take risks like you can building for yourself. Airbus, Bombardier, Boeing... if they take a risk like this, and it fails, the publicity could destroy them. If it fails for you... odds are, it's just back to the drawing board for something better. When it works for you, they can then look at your work and build on it.

Not to mention Mike Patey only has to answer to 1 person, his wife. He is only limited by his own creativity and time. Mike's almost certainly not a billionaire - it would be very difficult for someone working in general aviation to be one - but I think it's safe to say the Patey's are doing okay for themselves ;). They re-invest a lot of their profits back into aviation.

Amazing work, Mike! The final cost of designing and custom-building Scrappy must be astronomical, but I’ll leave the calculation of manufacturing costs to the bean counters. When passion is involved, money is no object.

He has done very well in the business world .. my view is how better to spend it before one pushes up daisies .. what's the point of keeping it .. plus the value added product at the end is worth more than what he put in to it anyway ... I would bet a considerable sum he could sell this in the 2 million range some Ferraris and Conigseggs go for ... perhaps in less than 15 minutes on the market

You know, your expertise in engineering is borne from years of experience and the depth of that expertise absolutely floors me. Especially considering you didn't go to college. (I assume. I doubt your ADHD brain could tolerate it.) I wish I could know how you got into some of the industries you got into, and especially how you went from a tinkerer/hobbyist to owning an engineering firm that did smart hybrid systems! Because I want to chase you down that path. After reading your brothers book I suddenly realize that I may have the tools (ADHD + Gifted IQ) to be just as successful as you. That terrifies me but also excites me because I consider you my ultimate role model. An absolute perfect superhuman person with all the same tastes, values, and interests as me.
