Um... In Finland we have minimal power cartridges defined for most animals, I think. We even have a minimal power requirement for bunnies, which is lower than that for rabbits and hares. For example class 2 is defined as energy at 100 meters being over 800J, with a bullet weight of at least 3.2 grams (examples given are 222 Rem, 223 Rem, 22 PPC USA, 6 PPC USA, 22-250 Rem, 7×33 Sako and 7.62×39), and is allowed for roe deer, seal, wolf, lynx, wolverine, beaver and mouflon, and any game from the lower classes. Class 4 is the highest, for moose etc. Energy at 100 meters > 2700 J, bullet weight at least 9 g, or energy at 100 meters > 2000 J, bullet weight at least 10 g, or lead free energy at 100 meters > 1900 J and bullet weight at least 7,5 grammaa. Calibers: 6.5×55 SE, 270 Win, 270 Wby Mag, 7 mm-08, Rem, 7×57, 7x65R, 7×64, 280 Rem, 7 mm Rem Mag, 7 mm Wby Mag, 7 mm STW, 308 Win, 7.62x53R, 30-06, 300 Win Mag, 300 WSM, 300 Wby Mag, 30-378 Wby Mag, 8.2x53R, 8x57JS, 8x57JRS, 338 Win Mag, 338 Lapua Mag, 340 Wby Mag, 9.3x53R, 9.3x74R, 9.3×62, 9.3×66 Sako, 375 H&H Mag, 416 Rem Mag, 6,5 Creedmoor ja 260 Rem. Allowed for moose, bear, boar, and other animals in the list. These are primarily for reasons of mercy, to increase the likelihood of the animal dying fast. Now, in AFRICA this might be different, since the wildlife is way more dangerous.

Just so you know, the .376 Steyr .270 grain load (when shot through a 28” test barrel) equals the original advertised velocity for the .375 H & H .270 grain load which was also fired in a 28” test barrel in order to achieve it’s advertised velocity! Also, the .375 Ruger achieves greater velocity via greater propellant capacity than the .375 H & H case. No magic there. I like the hat!
@michaelguerin564 жыл бұрын
My point was to provide historical perspective. If you want more velocity and energy that is fine BUT many hunters get by very well by loading 100 to 130 year old smokeless chamberings to original factory velocities and sometimes (given that average hunting distances tend to be 30m or less) 5-10 % below those velocities (taking full advantage of modern bullet manufacturing quality standards). The velocity race is an artefact of military specifications. Yes, it can be fun and ... yes higher velocities are a big thing with recreational varmint control BUT it is often more about buying more expensive projectiles, propellants cases, barrels, actions and sights than satisfying an actual need. That being said, each to their own.
@michaelguerin564 жыл бұрын
Cyclone Bravo Not ‘my’ 30-06 (wrong end of the planet) although I do own a rifle in that chambering. As previously stated, I provided some historical context. By the way, there is no practical standard magazine length (which is what really counts) for a ‘short action’. You could describe anything from a Savage Model 20 to a Brno ZKK 601 (or Mexican Mauser) as a short action rifle. The .376 Steyr is a niche cartridge that, in my opinion, will probably become a case-forming project for dedicated users within the next twenty years. I doubt that I will ever acquire one, especially given that a Swedish sporter in 9.3x57 would be easier, cheaper and more practical for me to buy, reload for and use in the local bush although I already have a Brno Volkspolizei Mod. 98 rifle (8.2x57 JS) with a Lyman 57 backsight and a barleycorn foresight that I have filed to create Patridge-style sharp-edges (for good definition). Breathe easy, enjoy your hunting and shooting; and keep yourself and your family safe in these Covid 19 times. I reckon that we have done this topic to death.

irony is that the last guy I knew who actually hunted Big Game in Africa back when there were few, if any rules, was a South African farmer who used an Enfield 1853 rifled musket because it was much cheaper and easier to supply than metallic cartridge weapons. A 600 or so grain slug of lead going a thousand feet or so a second was pretty much all you needed as long as you hit the right spots as you were supposed to. Sure, he had a 7mm Mauser just in case something leaped out of the bushes, but when actually trying to hunt big critters, he went for the rifled musket.

I had five cartridges to use and chose to shoot sitting down, crossed-legged, at 45 degrees to the target ..... for me a pleasantly stable position, but the first shot bowled me over backwards and off the berm I was sitting atop .... slightly embarrassing in front of a crowd, but I hit the ground, not the rifle .... and I took the final four standing up, it definitely helps absorb the recoil.

Love the pith helmet. Early in my shooting career i fired offhand a couple of 375 H&H rounds from a customized Sako with a short stock (owner was maybe 5'7"). I was focusing on keeping my eye away from the scope. Recoil wasn't bad, like a heavy push. Nowadays i am heavily interested in the 9.3x62mm, which is a small step down. If i move to AK, which is likely, and get into hunting, it should be great for moose, caribou, and bears. I might also get an AR-10 and an extra upper in 338 Federal (ah, the joys of a free state). I heard somewhere that rebarreled Garands in 35 Whelen are also popular up there. Sounds like an interesting concept. Another cartridge i like the idea of. I have always liked the Scout Rifle concept, and i would like one in 308 with an 18 or 20" barrel. I have a Springfield Scout Squad (18", not the SOCOM), but it is of course a lot heavier than a bolt action scout rifle. Another one that is close is the Savage Hog Hunter. It has a 20" medium weight barrel, so i am sure it does not meet the scout weight spec. But it seems like a nice rifle. I always liked the Steyr, but they are rather rare. Maybe Ruger could make a long action Scout in 35 Whelen- or a short action in 6.5x55 (don't bother me with Creedmoor nonsense; i am a traditionalist). Lots of food for thought. Great video as always. Definitely not in the same class as a .375, but the first gun I ever fired (that wasn't a .22lr) was a break action, single 20g H&R. Very light. I was 8'ish. Dad had me back up to the rear tire of a friend's farm tractor. I don't know if he did it on purpose or not, but I refused to fire a shotgun again for 5 years...

@@3928damian I can shoot a 20Ga all day long, but obviously not leaning back into anything! My Brother back in the 80's "won" a _single-shot 10Ga_ shotgun for selling magazine subscriptions to the Northwest Hunting and Fishing News. It made sense for him because he was hunting a lot of geese at the time. He took one shot with the 10Ga and never shot it again. I've still got the remainder of that box of ammunition. Dunno what ever happened to the shotgun. He want back to Dad's double barrel 12Ga after that, a heavier gun with less recoil and a backup shot on hand.

I love the idea of the scout rifle and Mr. Cooper. Can you do a video of what you think are the best scout rifles?
@WardenWolf4 жыл бұрын
My take: modern LPVO's have fully obsoleted the scout rifle concept. Scout rifles are front-heavy and while the more-limited scope technology of the 80's and 90's allowed the concept some viability, the vastly improved optics we have now have completely removed the need for it. That's not to say the Steyr Scout isn't still an excellent rifle, particularly since they designed it so you could still mount a traditional scope to it. I'd gladly own one, but I'd mount my scope traditionally.
@brianwilson48613 жыл бұрын
One of the reasons Cooper wanted the scope mounted so far forward was so that the rifle could be reloaded with stripper clips. What is an "LPVO"? Low power variable optic? The scope doesn't make it as muzzle heavy as it would be if it had a heavy barrel and a scope mounted in the traditional location. Muzzle heavy is generally fine because we support the rifle underneath. Muzzle light and the stock wants to slip off your shoulder and the forend doesn't rest in your far hand. you have to put your far hand on top of the rifle to keep it from pointing skyward. nearly all rifles are muzzle heavy and it's better to be way to muzzle heavy then just a little muzzle light.

Speaking of the scout rifle in general, has anyone thought of combining the scout rifle concept and apply it to Karl and Ian’s wwsd (what would Stoner do) project?
@pscwplb4 жыл бұрын
I'd think that the concepts are fundamentally incompatible. Bolt action is useless on a service rifle and semi auto is illegal for hunting in way too many areas.

The difference between the Scout concept and WWSD is that the Scout was invented from whole clothe for a fictional character, seriously Cooper was inspired by a novel. WWSD is based on more real world applications

My M70 Safari Express in 375H&H lets you know when you press the trigger but it's not that harsh. It's an FN South Carolina rifle and the stock design delivers perceived recoil somewhere above a 30-06 and below a 300Win. It feels more like a sturdy shove than a punch, kinda like a 1911/45acp compared to a Glock in 40s&w. Anything past a 30-06 makes good stock design a must! Ian, you'd like my 375H&H because of the improved Winchester stock design.

Ians finger hitting the sling swivel on the Ruger M77 in .375 Ruger, is one reason, why most African big game rifles, have the sling swivel on the barrel. The other reason, is to make the rifle better balanced, while being carried slinged over the shoulder. The later because those rifles tend to have longer and thicker barrels, than something more...pedestrian, like a 8x57 or .30-06, that in turn makes the rifles more front heavy.

I always shot fullbore bolt-action rifles prone (I was at school) and I hadn’t thought about why the recoil was such a killer, especially for the smaller kids. When I was an adult, it was semi-auto (FAL) or machine guns, so no issues however they were fired.

@elund4084 жыл бұрын
The scout scope, is long eye relief so the shooter can keep both eyes open and have good vision around the area, highly helpful in a place where shots are close and the targeted game eats you. it also allows very quick snap shots and shots on running game. it takes some time in the field to get used to it, it is not a great range scope for shooting tiny little groups at 300 yrds.
@sniperfreak2234 жыл бұрын
That pain from getting rapped by the sling swivel is why so many dangerous game rifles have the forward sling swivel mounted to the barrel instead of the stock.
@cs-rj8ru2 жыл бұрын
Or maybe it just has to do with the barrel on these rifles be a very handy mounting point, being essentially a truck axle.
