I have watched hundreds of YT guitar lessons over the last 10 years, and Ian continues to show me something elegant and simple that I didn't really know. He keeps doing this. Time after time. Chapeau, sir. Best learning channel on YT.

Dude, I don't know if you'll know what I'm talking about, but I remember once, when I was trying to learn to play, I was having trouble tuning my guitar, so I brought it to my roommate Geoff, who was the single most naturally talented (and well trained) guitarist I've ever met. As he was tuning my guitar, he started just riffing with it, and I swear, for like 5 minutes, he sat there and had a conversation with me THROUGH THE MUSIC. No words, he'd simply play something and look at me, and I'd KNOW what he was "saying". It was the strangest, most incredible musical experience I've ever had, but I've never understood HOW it happened. Have you ever heard of anything like that before? Ever experienced it?

You are a genius. I had to stop and go to the guitar and check for myself is it really real? It was. Yes I did nod my head to concur with your thoughts. I did also feel annoyed by that “some invisible irritant” flying through your nose. 🤓 I was there right near your desk taking instructions. Not a second got lost. For the first time could see the D-minor and C major connection. Many Indian Hindi songs have these Dminor to C jump many many many. But I couldn’t connect them or make sense out of it, other than mechanically playing them sometimes with decent sound interspersed with many a times a dumb-muted sound. But the 5th of dminor to the 3rd of Cmajor sound when I could connect blew me up. Now this opens up a an ocean of possibilities. Probably innumerable people might have tried to say this same thing, but only today I could connect. Back to where I started. You are indeed a genius. Furthermore your thoughts flow at a speed where anyone can understand. Take a bow. Respect.🙏🙏🙏🙏

Yes, this made sense. It's interesting that in a lot of things, people hear things or see things and are moved by them without really knowing why. In the case of these specific notes, as listeners, I think everyone "hears" tension in music but couldn't say what it was beyond saying, "it needs to go end/resolve/go somewhere" Great video!

Personally, I think this is a wonderful lesson!!! I have been doing this for years, I just call it arpeggiating chords. I started doing this years ago primarily because as an entertainer I wanted my music to sound better than just simply strumming chords which, sometimes is necessary, but there is so much more! Now, I have simply been doing this because it sounded good to me and I am pretty much an autodidactic player so this has come to me, I suppose innately. However, just hearing you talk about what I am already doing and offering the theory behind it will certainly make me much better at it. Although, I do not write music per se, I write my own arrangements and in doing so, I do use many variations of chords to add color, and that, "one note", makes a tremendous difference. Thanks so much.

Great lesson. I’ve been trying to figure out how to add color and melodies to my chording. Also how to play riffs or embellishments out of chords. It is difficult for me to do while I’m singing. I played and sang for years but always in a band. And usually just chord rhythm. Now I’m wanting to do solo gigs and I’m terrified because it’s just me and my guitar. No safety nets. Anyways, you’re my favorite teacher. Thank you for your teaching videos
