Welded for 10 years… had not struck an arc in 5 years till today. Started a new job welding, and while I do have tons of experience, it really ain’t like riding a bike. This video was a life saver bud.

Some advice I'd give to young up& coming stick welders. Don't hold the electrode holder too tight. Practice as much as you can with your weaker hand. Don't always practice on the bench. Practice in awkward positions. Get into the habit of ALWAYS saying "eyes) every time you strike a arc (fellow welders/fabricators/platers ect don't like being "flashed) 🌚👍

I had to do some welding today, ran a bead, ground it and tried again. Repeat. Threw away the electrode I was using. Had some stainless steel electrodes, tried them, first try is perfect (for my skill and need). Turns out I wasn't shit, the electrodes were. Have to buy some good electrodes in the future.

I have a few projects that I want to do, and need to get up to speed with stick before starting. It sounds like the tutorial you are working on, along with your stick course will be helpful for me. I'll be using borrowed equipment. Do you have sources to suggest for materials (coupons etc) to use while learning? A metal supply place seems like overkill for these small pieces (don't want to annoy them). Thoughts/suggestions?
@fastbusiness2 жыл бұрын
I have a local metal/scrap recycle place in my area where I can go in and look for metal to buy. They have every kind of junk, and metal of all sorts and sizes, including some new stuff. If you have access to one of these, you might be able to get some good material to practice on for a fraction of new price.

@TimWelds: Isn't the welding gloves you're using the BlackStallion GM1550 Mig Gloves - do you think it's also appropriate and safe for Stick (I'm curious as I really like the design of it and hoping it'll be good for Stick as well.

Hello Tim. Wondering if you can help me out. I'm 70 yrs. Old learning to stick weld. Autodarkening helmet. Problem is I can't see enough to distinguish anything. What do you suppose is the solution? Thank you. My welds are hideous and I'm frustrated.

Thanks fot tips, one thing that determans your manipulation of rod or technique is your pool, by pool I mean when you weld two pices both had to be equaliy molten and keep angle of rod so that slags stays behind the molten pool.Be sure when welding that you melt both pices , I mean read the pudle. Tim thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I am welder my self, pipe welding in EU. I am sorry if my English is not correct.

Could anyone be able to tell me which states are the best for welding careers ? I try to do my own research but there’s many different answers. Would like to see if anyone could help me out with this. I’m taking a welding course that I barely started a few months ago and I know that once i get some certs, I would like to see which other states are best for welding jobs. I currently live in California but would like to move out of state someday.

Watching people weld always makes me feel like I’m going too fast, but my buddy Tony says I have to go fast because I’m welding 1/8” with a 3/32” rod. If I turn down the amperage, I can’t strike an arc. Thanks.
@TimWelds9 ай бұрын
If your weld is the size you want and you aren’t getting undercut, then your travel speed is good. I weld 1/8” with 3/32” rod a lot and it works great.

I have a question. Which welding mode gives joints that are more tolerant or elastic to compensate heat expansion and contraction ? Stick or mig ?
@DavidCuddy-ml7gv Жыл бұрын
Stick gives more variety in electrode/filler selection, but I wouldn't depend on either that hard, as you'll likely end up with cracking at the Heat Affected Zone over time.

Another good informative video Tim. I’ve recently picked up a new welder (Everlast 210EXT). I’ll look through your videos, but would be good to see someone swap it from TIG to stick. Learning the TIG side of things and your videos have been great. I’ve MIG welded for years (stick welded as a youth with my dad) so it’s been good to learn the other processes.

Long arc for a second and get the metal hot then move in
@prestondallas403510 ай бұрын

@Brian-dj3ru10 ай бұрын
@prestondallas4035 you're welcome. When I first started I would, hold the rod with my free hand kind of like a pool stick,while I'll flicked my hand that's holding the stinger and struck it like a match and that helped me to get going
