Hello. I've been welding for over 40-years and my preferred stick rod is 7014, doing flat, vertical and overhead with AC current. I worked in factories where I had to be certified and of course a 7014 is not used. I hated the 8018 rod and the 60 series rod, well, if I'm working in a tight spot, where there is a lot of grease or rust, after cleaning as much as possible I use a 60 series rod at high heat for the first pass to blow the junk out. I never had a fail with a 7014 and when comparing the 7018, I'll stay with the 7014. What welder is used makes a difference. I've tried the Lincoln "Buzz Box" and they are garbage. I have an old Craftsman made in 1972 with copper windings. I bought it new and its still going. Not one part went bad, not even the fan motor. I never worried about the duty cycle. I have quick connects for the stinger and when it got too hot to handle I'd switch it and keep welding. An AC welder and a 7014 is a good combo. I've made heavy equipment trailers with the 7014 and never a crack in the welds. Metal over 1/2 inch thick I'd preheat. My trick in welding is listening to the sound, like bacon frying. A crisp cracking sound. When welding it has to sound right. As I got older I got lazy and now use a mig more often. A mig has its advantages. But when I have to weld something big and heavy, its time to break out the 7014 and my Craftsman AC welder.

one thing that makes a great pick for cleaning tight spots without power tools is to take a hacksaw blade and cut it in half at about 60 degrees. its also have a good whole blade or two you may be able to use it instead of a cut off wheel. i always havw a few things like this in ny bag of tricks

Years ago I can't remember if I was practicing for the 1st yr Government SMAW Cert Test (🇨🇦) or if it was actually during the 6010/7018 Vert (luckily you are allowed a new Coupon to start over if it was during that section of the Test.) The Root went in fine, but I had a Brainfart and forgot to change direction during the fill or change any Settings IIRC. I was welding along and all of a sudden a good section of my Puddle and what was behind it poured down and off my Coupon (It was like I was gouging out my Weld instead of Welding.)

@ShadeAkeley5 жыл бұрын
If they're old 7018 that were not stored in an oven or at least outside the reach of humidity, well they're probably toast. If it's not for code works, you could try to bake them but you probably won't get much out of it
