A stiff-legged deadlift involves no quad drive by keeping the shins straight (in other words: not bending the knees) in order to involve more hamstring and lower back. The RDL was created by Nicu Vlad and his coach, Dragomir Cioroslan, to strengthen Nicu's back for the clean and jerk. There was no name for it. In 1990, Nicu and his coach were in San Francisco conducting a clinic at a gym named The Sports Palace owned by Jim Schmitz, the then President of the US Weightlifting Federation and the US weight lifting in 1980, 1988, and 1992. While at the clinic, Nicu demonstrated the Olympic lifts and proceeded to do his deadlift variation. Someone asked what the name of the lift and Nicu and Dragomir just shrugged. At that point, Jim Schmitz said, "Let's call it the Romanian deadline, or RDL for short." Dragomir could have learned it from Istvan, but Nicu and Jim Schmitz gave it a name and a place in the training world.

The explanation is good, his knee flexion on the SLDL is deeper than most people's would be because of levers (long torso, short legs), not because technique is incorrect. Your legs are flexed, not locked, otherwise the spine would have to flex and the whole thing would be wonky.

I was quite surprised to hear such an explanation from you, of all people. The difference seems to come down to whether or not the bar touches the floor, which sounds pretty arbitrary. From what I know, the difference is that in the Stiff Leg Deadlift, there’s less bend in the knees, keeping them relatively straight, which emphasizes the hamstrings. In contrast, the Romanian Deadlift involves more bending in the knees and hips, which engages the glutes more.
@jlirving5 ай бұрын
For me: Romanian, the cue is legs striaght and arse back. This gives me that ridiculous stretch in the hamstrings with a fraction of the rom. Stiff leg, I take to the floor, I'm folding my body a bit more allowing a littke bit more of upper back bend, there is a little leg bend allowed. Both are important imho. Slap on some defecit deadlifts and rack pulls and you're golden for all your deadlift accessory work.

I see lots of women with super heavy weights. It looks hard on the back. I prefer lower weight and holding the stretch. No pain in the back.

Romian deadlifts you hinge mostly,think kinda like a good morning but holding a bar not one on your back. where sldls are really just a deadlift you set up in a similar position to a normal but before you move your knees to touch the bar after pulling the slack out, ie keep your legs alot straighter during the pull and not bringing them to the bar as much

no, a stiff leg deadlift is just what it sounds like: "STIFF must the leg be" ! Legs should be BENT to a degree that allows you to put the bar down, then you lift IN THAT LEG POSITION all the way up, without straightening your legs. Romanian deadlift instead focuses on keeping the legs as straight as possible to emphasize low back and hamstring (even calves!) strength while stretched; obviously, you can't quite touch down in that straight leg position, and *that's* WHY you don't.
