A New England was a Top Ten single for Kirsty MacColl in 1985. Billy Bragg wrote a couple of extra verses for the song just for Kirsty.

I love both versions and learned to play the song on the ukulele. I like to put Bragg's original boy-to-girl verses first, followed by the last 2 girl-to-boy verses. to my mind it's like the girl answering the boy and telling him how he got it all wrong and she'd always liked him anyway

I’m 60 year old man an still get a tearful every time I watch Kirsty’s videos. She was what I would have called a “pub girl” back in the day. Kirsty MacColl died prematurely in December 2000 (age 41), she was killed in a boat accident in Mexico. She pushed one of her sons away from the boat, but she got hit and killed by it. In my opinion, Kirsty died a hero.

@@salmonesque- Are you sure? The guitar credit on this record is conspicuously missing and stylistically it contains many of Johnny's hallmarks. Whatever you may think about the guy it's a matter of record that he loved Kirsty to bits, and cutting guitar tracks for her as long as he remained anonymous is very much in keeping with his way of doing things.
@salmonesque
@salmonesque 10 ай бұрын
You know more about him than me but as a guitar player I'd bet my tele that he did not play on that track. I just don't think he has the musicality to have played those lines. I know that this is not in keeping with the reverence in which he's held but I don't think he could've come up with those parts. I researched track credits and it mentions a couple of guitarists but nowhere does it credit Marr so, I'm fairly sure. Tbc, I do think he is a singularly brilliant stylised guitarist who has come up with some incredible guitar lines and playing on classic tracks. Through interviews with him I have decided that no one loves Johnny Marr more than Johnny Marr though. @@joehoy9242

This was one of the songs I ran to the radio for in the 1980's......a fresh breath of air in the (What I then considered , my taste has become milder since the last twenty years) polluted smoke of synthpop. I can still get a kick out of this song and am just jamming along with my newly acquired electric 12 string. Still get goosebumps. Don't know why, the lyrics don't apply to me but it is the overall atmosphere of youth and exciting music that speaks to me still, How sadly Kirsty may have met her end, in her musical inheritance and in her vids she at least doesn't age.Very thankful for the fact I can still enjoy it with modern technology.

I was lucky enough to spend a little time with Kirsty at a party in the late 90s...she was the most gentle, mannerful woman. Very quietly spoken and just lovely. I'm glad I got to meet her and that she left a beautiful legacy for her children.

20 years ago yesterday since the horrifying murder of Kirsty happened. It was murder and I will never sway from that belief. My favourite song of hers is this one. It was in the charts when I was born and I have always loved it. It's heartbreaking to see she's pregnant in this video and was killed saving her sons lives 💔

Probarbly manslaughter or the equivalent. I see to remember it was reckless not malicious. Nevertheless the Americans look after their own again and he was spirited away and lost in his big county. Add them all up in recent years. Perhaps we can count up to ten. Justice??

It was cold in January 1985 in North West England where I was and the video matched the weather. The documentary about the making of Fairy Tale Of New York pays tribute to Kirsty MacColl. Deeply moving and a special mention for her mother who comes across as so dignified.

As a little boy in the 80's I have fond memories of lots of very 80's films like the John Hughes movies, weird science, anything with the brat pack, etc and I always loved the music. It came as a big surprise when around the millennium I was old enough to track down a lot of the songs of my childhood and found most were by British bands like Tears for Fears, Ultravox and The Cure. The 80's must have been the 2nd British invasion after the rock bands of the 60's!

Evokes growing up in some blighted town where ideals have been let go of and hope of betterment stripped away by the economic desolation of the 80s,far from the affluent places,and just about the only thing left to aspire to is teenage pregnancy (and with it the chance of a council house).

@@krashd He wrote I put you on a pedestal, they put you on the pill. His lyrics are basically th same as hers barring a couple of bits, ie. I'm looking for another girl versus Are you looking for another girl. Great piece of song writing but I prefer her singing it.
