Another great Stig Shift! The blue box next to the pressurization controller that you were testing is an extremely important unit for safety in flight - the Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System computer (EGPWS). It warns the crew if they are approaching terrain in flight, either horizontally or vertically. That box contains a digital database of all terrain in the entire world, and is coupled to the GPS for aircraft position and the Air Data Computer and Radio Altimeter for height above ground, pressure altitude and airspeed. Honeywell packed a lot of functionality in that small box. Might be cool on a future Stig Shift to show the digital terrain on the pilot’s nav display in a 737. If the IRS is aligned to the GPS, just push the “TER” button on the EFIS control panel and rotate the range knob to zoom out the Nav display. The San Gabriel mountain range to the north of LAX ought to show up in shades of yellow, orange and red.

Stig Shift makes me very happy. On so many levels. Thanks for taking time and effort to spread your knowledge, happiness and stories. I've been a life long avgeek, since my first flight as infant about half a century ago. Always been fascinated by aviation and the technology that makes it possible. Always loved being around and inside airplanes. Always asked questions about them or pondered about how they work. What I've come to grow more and more appreciation for over time, is the people that makes all this possible. From the engineers designing and building them to the ones making sure we travel comfortable and safe. I never feel as safe and taken care of as riding an airliner, knowing about how much care and work that has gone into make it possible. By professionals, from the moment I step into the terminal to the moment I leave it at the destination. It's a beautiful thing. However, what I also appreciate is this: I came here for details about aircrafts and knowledge shared about them. I'll hang around just for the feeling of just... well, hanging around those beautiful machines like I always dreamt of doing: up close and personal. Poking in places I wouldn't get near otherwise. Surprisingly to me, however, the thing that has made the moments I watch Stig Shift special... is the feel good-feeling I get. It's almost a spiritual experience. My kind of meditation if you will. Or therapy perhaps? I could watch this channel just for good, solid advice on how to try to live a good life (and I am not thinking of the smell of jet fuel here). Things I get reminded of here are, for instance: be present. Appreciate things around you and what you have, that makes you feel good. Be nice, be humble but also be proud of what you do and have achieved. (We tend to always be on our way somewhere, physically or in our minds. Or let worries and stress dominate our everyday life. It's only human to do so, but that is also why it matter to try to break free from this. Whenever we can. It can be as easy to have someone reminding you about this, every now and then. Like weekly. While poking aircrafts and enjoy their awesomeness. Works for me.) Thanks Stig. Keep being you, no matter what. And love to all of you people being here!

Another great video. The MRTT KC30’s (A330-200 based)are used by several air forces around the world, off the top of my head Australia, Singapore, UK, France, Germany, NATO and a few more. The MRTT actually won a procurement competition to replace the KC135 in the US Airforce but Boeing complained and the result was changed and the contract given to Boeing KC46 (B767 based). The project is years late, over budget with lots of problems, some still to be resolved. The US government has supported a US company but at a big cost in money and time. You probably know all this. I think most MRTT’s are refurbished and modified civilian A330-200’s, it is impressive to see the systems in the aircraft to enable and monitor in flight refuelling with both probe and drogue (1 centre line probe and 2 drogues mounted at the point on the wing where A340’s have their outboard engines, that’s enough from me. Yoo Stig. Loved the video. Night time brake riding was such a treat. Got a few questions to ask 1. Idk if you explained this in an older video but can you go over how the bleed air system works. If u already explained then no probs ill go back n watch 2. What type of clothing do AMTs wear? I would imagine durable but breathable material (seeing that it does get really hot sometimes) 3. U mentioned the airplane with the XV reg is an ex Virgin. Would the registration change again if that particular aircraft is bought by another carrier? Sorry for the many questions but really enjoy and learn a lot from each upload. Keep on teaching us and we'll see ya in the next one. Dont forget the coffee🤙🏽 ☕
@StigAviation2 ай бұрын
I have explained how the bleed air system works many times. If you have time reference my older videos and you’ll see me talking about it in detail. As for the clothing that I wear, it is issued to me by my airline. It is very durable and breathable material. And asked for the ex virgin aircraft, if another airline wishes to purchase that aircraft they have the option of, changing the registration, or they could keep it the same
@747FoSophie2 ай бұрын
That's a fancy parking system you have, we still rely on people with wands to guide us in but then we don't park at gates. I love learning about the parts of aircraft that us pilots don't get to see. If you think those Telex headsets (for the captains repalcement) are expensive, the Bose ProFlight 2's are $1,000. For the ground incident it's ATC's fault for telling the Delta crew to taxi when it wasn't clear. It's possible the CRJ was on tower and the A350 was on ground frequency.

So, do the out-stations line service the O2 bottle? Do any commercial jets have LOX systems? 44:00 One of my favorite things is to see a line of aircraft on approach at night. It's so cool to see the aerodrome system at work! Do you think that Endeavor jet is a total loss or do you think they can rebuild the empennage? I would imagine there is a lot of structural damage, especially in such close proximity to the aft pressure bulkhead.
@StigAviation2 ай бұрын
Out stations probably will service the bottles. Don’t know of any commercial aircraft using LOX. But I know military jets use it. The endeavor jet will most likely get fix. But it will be out of service for a while.

I've been wondering this for a while. On some planes. The engine is turning slowly but obviously not on when parked lol What causes that too happen? And one some walk around there's smoke coming from the center exhaust? It's not burning oil or just really hot. Thanks for the fantastic educational content. I love what you do and how you take the time to explain in absolute detail. Your the best Stiggy!
@StigAviation2 ай бұрын
One thing you have to realize that these engines are perfectly balanced. A slight gust of wind will simply turn the blades, we call that windmilling. And the smoke that you’re seeing coming out from the exhaust portion is burned oil gases.

Hey stig do you ever realistically get to use your flight benefits? Like is it realistic to swap shifts and go on a short vacation on your days off? Or is it just a pipe dream. Also , you should do a Q&A video one day I think it’ll really help future A&P mechanics get a sense of everything 🙏🏼

I know that pilots, flight attendants and their families get to enjoy the flight benefits a lot.

I use them all the time, I give away days and I go on many vacations, matter fact I did that on my previous weeks, I went to Miami for a couple of days. I have done so much traveling with my flight benefits. it’s not even funny. And I fly for free, obviously I fly on standby but I still fly for free. Heck I’ve even gone to New York for a slice of pizza and came right back on the same day

Couple things. I'm not sure about in SoCal but I know it's fairly common in parts of Arizona and Texas to have our NATO allies come for joint training exercises so if the Dutch Air Force normally refuel from an A330 based tanker I'm not surprised one accompanied them. As for the incident in Atlanta it looks like the CR9 was back quite a ways back from the hold short line but that still doesn't excuse the A350 crew from not paying attention and hitting it. There should have been about 40 feet of clearance according what Juan Browne could figure from the post collision photos.
@StigAviation2 ай бұрын
That could be the case as well, as I said, I don’t know how far away the RJ was parked, I’m sure they’ll get to the bottom of it when they finish the investigation.

Thank you, sir. I have always been fascinated with everything aeronautical, and watching this really scratches an itch. Now that we are older, and can afford it, the Mrs and I fly once a year for vacation. While I don't fly with your company; Canadian carriers are much simpler, given our remote area, I love a wrench jockey perspective nonetheless. Thank you for your hard work!

Wow that was beautiful seeing the Airbus powering off in the dark, it’s so interesting seeing the once busy plane full of excited passengers become completely dark and silent like a liminal space 👍🌱if only Airbus used Nintendo Wii clock battery technology, those batteries must be getting on for 15 years old and are still ticking!
