Hey Stig you got the IRS concept a bit wrong, the IRS itself only computes the inertial position by integrating data from accelerometers and gyroscopes starting from the initial position set at the gate, you can see it as being in a car blindfolded only knowing where you started from and figuring out where you are only by feeling how the car is turning or accelerating/braking, the more you go on the less accurate your positon estimate will be, and that's where the drift comes from. GPS position on the other hand doesn't accumulate errors because every second it feeds instant measurements from different satellites but it has a bigger uncertainty spread, and this is fixed with differential WAAS stations that make it precise enough to fly instruent approaches off GPS alone. In the end planes use a "tightly coupled Kalman Filter" algorithm, that in short words uses the coordinates both IRS and GPS think they are to calculate a new position that has a higher accuracy probability, and every second it feeds GPS data into the IRS to correct for the drift, like doing a new position initialization every second. Sorry if I wasn't clear, I'm an guidance and navigation engineer but english is not my first language.

@davidcottington55346 ай бұрын
Yes, the three IRs determine position based on their movement through space (inertial). Along with the Air Data information (barometric), they make up the three ADIRS. The position from each of the three IRS is combined to generate a MIX IRS position. The IRSs also compute a combined GPIRS position using any of the two GPS systems in a Multi-Mode Receiver (MMR). A combination of the MIX IRS and GPS position is used by each FMGCs to determine their own position (FMGC1 and FMGC2). The FMGCs always choose whatever position they determine to be the most accurate. The FMGCs also continually measure a vector (called a bias) between the MIX IRS position and the GPIRS position. If the FMGCs lose the GPIRS position information, the FMGCs memorizes the bias and use it to compute the Flight Management (the FM part of FMGC) position. Kind of complicated but as you always say, there is a ton of redundancy in aircraft systems.

I'm "disabled" and although I dont like that word, its the one most appropriate to describe my situation. I was injured pretty badly while deployed to Afghanistan in 2009 and so I wasnt able to pursue my dream of being a commercial airline pilot and I am not able to do any techincal job like maintenance or anything related to aviation because of how sever my injuries are. I dont say that for you or anyone to feel sorry for me, so please dont. I mention this because I look forward to your videos and dream of what could have been. So, keep em coming pal. Hey Stig! 37:30. Just wanted to add a small correction. The Ram Air doors on the 737 are not simply spring loaded to close in flight. It’s a bit more complicated. The doors are actuated with AC power from the associated AC transfer buss and controlled with power from the associated side DC buss. The CBs for these doors are on the P6-4 panel behind the FO seat, rows A and B. The PSEU uses the Air-Ground sensing and the pressure differential either side of the heat exchanger (to detect blockage or dirty heat exchanger) to determine when to close the deflector doors. In the cockpit, the two blue lights [RAM DOOR FULL OPEN] on the air conditioning panel normally extinguish in flight. If they remain illuminated, that is the notification to the crew that there might be an issue with blockage or a dirty heat exchanger. There is no action that can be taken in flight, hence the blue instead of amber light. The blue Ram door status lights have been removed from the Max and are only found on the NG.
@StigAviation6 ай бұрын
But i wasn’t talking about the ram air door for the pack intake my friend. I was talking about the Deflector door.
@Stepclimb6 ай бұрын
@@StigAviation Ah yes, not sure why I thought you were talking about the ram air doors when you were clearly pointing to the deflector door! I did some digging in the systems manuals. It turns out the Deflector door is also electrically actuated based on air-ground logic. It does not modulate. It’s either open or closed.

Hi stig, I used to live near Chester and the huge airbus wing plant in north Wales. The airbus beluga wing transporter between Broughton and Toluse flew over my house twice a week. When the airbus 380 was planned the wing plant at Broughton expanded enormously and is vast. Airbus employs a lot of people and is the primary industry in this area. I had a tour of the wing plant a few years ago, interestingly it occupies a part of the plant where Lancaster bombers were made and was handed over to De Havaland where later on Chipmunks were made amongst other things. Keep up the good work

Howdy Stig! I keep forgetting to ask, but is your handle a Top Gear reference? 42:30 You explained the IRSs pretty well. In the bus we have to check the drift after every shut down as part of our flow. Anything over 5nm error over 2 hours we have to write up. I'll maybe get one once quarterly, I'm sure you see more. In recurrent training we occasionally practice flying with all of them failed, using nothing but the standby instruments. It's... unpleasant. 46:30 BLASPHEMER!!!! I'm jealous LAX always gets the NEOs. I hardly ever get them in DFW 😭 Great job as always.

That engine and its fan blades are truly a work of art: (Fun Fact) “The engine contains twenty-two fan blades, each of which is four feet long and weighs less than fifty pounds. Composite technology has allowed them to design a uniquely formed blade that is lighter, more aerodynamic, and larger than traditional titanium blades. The blade is made of carbon fiber and a toughened epoxy matrix, composite material that is extremely flexible yet highly resistant to impact. Designed using three-dimensional aerospace computer modeling technology, the blade is able to draw a massive air into the engine while operating at a low noise level. The fan blade is a powerful fusion of cutting-edge engineering and design, and its beautiful undulating form is a pure expression of aerodynamic function. It’s inclusion in MoMA’s collection continues a tradition started in 1934 with the exhibition of Machine Art, in which advanced airplane propellers were shown together with coils, ball bearings, and other machine parts of equally honest beauty.” From The Museum of Modern Art. The Fan Blade is not currently on display. Manufacturer: CFAN

Hey Stig, I just wanted to say thank you so much. I am currently a student getting my Airframe and Powerplant license, almost completely done with my airframe. Without telling my whole life story, I wanted to work in aviation, specifically as a pilot, but I couldn't keep up with the cost after my private license so I switched to the maintenance track. I had a pretty poor attitude, but you have changed that. My instructor introduced you to my class during our landing gear section due to your amazing video a while back working with the tiebolts that stripped and clogged up the brakes. I have since watched more of your videos personally and have been super inspired by your positivity at work. While I am aiming to work on helicopters and not in the airlines, I am so inspired by how much you love your job and the fantastic information you give that helps me understand systems even better. So, again, thank you so much for being awesome! Keep up the great work and keep having fun!

Keep up the good work Stig! Just a couple questions: 1. What do you carry on you during your shift, like tools ect. + your service vehicle? 2. What does your work schedule look like? 3. What are the checks you do compared to a A-B-C-D check?

Thank you very much, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos. I have a whole separate video dedicated to my tools, as well as when I carry in my pouch. I also have a dedicated video specific to all those checks you mentioned. And as for my schedule, I usually work 16 hour shifts three days.

For your new tool pouch, you should look at getting a Police Duty Belt for it, so you can take it on and off easily and it shouldn’t pull your pants down as much.

I think your “drift” explanation was great. In the manufacturing world, we would call that a build up of tolerance. If a part is continually manufactured on the high or low side of tolerance yet, still within spec, eventually you may have a mismatch to the next assembly when the parts are married. In your case, drift is building up over time. Unless maintenance is done on the tooling, that tolerance could even allow out of spec parts. Can the system be reset or maintained to correct the drift?
@StigAviation12 күн бұрын
The system resets itself once you realign the aircraft. Once it’s taken out of alignment and then realigned it will regain its proper parameters

Stig if you ever get merch you need a shirt that says "Cargo Never Dissapoints." You could have like a front view of two or three super cars with the front view of a 767F or 777F behind them! Lol Edit: I think we can all agree Trump knows how to choose his personal planes. He just sold a Citation X not to long ago and had a 727 VIP bird before the 75..... Edit(2) I took a tour of Deltas Tech Ops in college. The 777 (the one i saw was an LR) is. VERY massive I got a picture standing in its GE-90 engine inlet.....and they literally had a MD-80 positioned under its wing LOL. The cleaners had to wear harnesses as they spot cleaned the wings in the hangar!
@StigAviation6 ай бұрын
That would be definitely fun merch idea. Glad you got to experience the 777 and real life, it’s a beautiful aircraft.
@sharoncassell52733 ай бұрын
We only wore harnesses on the T tail of a C141 which was only 40 ft up. Wings were 17 feet high. I guess you could still break something if you fell off the wing. My partner slid off an icy wing but only bruised his buttocks and went back to work.
