I have a 039 looks to be the same age. I know I’ve had mine 23 years. Mine was slinging oil off the bar like crazy. I took it apart after watching several videos and after the repair I went to put it back together and I could have swore that mine also had that plate that you were looking for. I searched for two days looking anywhere and everywhere. I finally said the hell with it and put it back together and said if runs it runs if not then I’m off to the Stihl dealer. It runs fine thank god. Great video the most detailed on showing every possible place that the oil leak could be coming from!! 👍

That plug you referred to along side the muffler can be fixed by the grub screw used in the older Stihl models vent system. The older models used a length of hose with 2 of those screws. 028 used 'em among others. It'll thread in with no problem but make sure don't go too far in or you'll block the oiler passage.

Nice work 👍🏻 I hate when you get everything back together and there’s more than one issue, especially when it’s something someone else caused.

Every time I think I’ve learned every possible reason for a bar oil leak I find another one! Great save! Although I’ve used 1184 for a lot of different applications, my first thought for that fix would have been the plastic epoxy. I might have slathered the screw with silicone grease before installing, just to see if it would be possible to seal the leak and remove the screw also. The other possibility might be to apply direct heat to the screw after the epoxy set up to see if it could be removed. Anyhow, thanks for the video and adding one more thing to look for when I’m running down oil leaks. 👍🔧🧰

I missed the absence of the flat plate washer. When I looked back at you video it was missing. I would have replaced the oiler.

@@RayofallTrades Stihl calls it a cover washer. For some reason someone left it off the 029 that I rebuilt, too. I caught it on the IPL and replaced it. If it is not there you can cause all kinds of problems. Just remember TOP means what it says - TOP faces outward. If you put on a rimless sprocket please remember it takes a thicker steel washer, instead of the aluminum one used with spur sprockets. If not the sprocket will bounce around on the sprocket and wear both out prematurely.

Some of the early 029 and 039s did not have the washer under the clutch. They clutch used on the was slightly different also. I've rebuilt at least 25 of these. Great video.

I have the 028 farm boss....I didn't even have to look at the saw.... Stupid oil cap! Dumbest design! 2 piece oil cap... Junk! I have the screw in caps, not the twist and lock.
