I need to get cutting today, but before we get that done I need to teach myself how to sharpen with the Stihl 2 in 1 sharpener. A few tips and tricks I learned along the way.
Have a great day Around the Yard!

Good job, Brent. Not bad for you trying out. As you do more, you will get better and better. I lost count of how many chains i messed up learning with just a round file. I have had a few in my area telling me i am getting better and better 😉👍

Can't say I've ever used one of those. From the video it looks like you have good ability to keep straight.

Pretty much the first time right here. Initial impression is I like it. Just need to keep a vise in the woodyard to make it easy.

Nice work Brent 👍 the longer you do it, the smoother it becomes…..after a period of time, the norm seems to be 3-4 strokes I have found. I also (right or wrong) put the log clamp a bit further back on the bar…..helps me maintain the proper angle and stroke. I keep it fairly tight on the bar. Take a permanent marker and darken in the chainsaw and arrows on the 2&1 and makes it easier to orient the 2&1 to the chainsaw bar…..I have found👍👏😎🇺🇸

Great Ideas, I’m going to implement those on the next sharpening session. I really like the permanent marker suggestion of coloring it in. I always forget that I own it, and the perk is it can be modified to best suit needs. Hope you are having a great holiday weekend with your family.

I also have 2, but it didn’t dawn on me when I bought the first one that they were sized for the various chain sizes… The first one I bought was a 0.325 and didn’t work with any of my saws, and I didn’t realize it at the time, so I just thought it didn’t work well on 3/8” 😂 Not to long ago I saw the .325 molded on it and the light 💡 bulb went off that I bought the wrong one. This is the 3/8.

If you roll the file over you can do the opposite tooth and go around the bar with out skipping teeth - makes it much faster once you get the hang of it

Good call! That will be the plan as I get more efficient with it.

You could actually give them a few more strokes to clean them up a bit. If you go back and look at our video when I brought the Holzforma, you’ll notice how I can really dig it out. It was for two distinct reasons. 1) the carb was not tuned correctly. This helped greatly once I did tune it. 2) the depth gauges were excessively filed. So the teeth were taking a much deeper cut. You would be wise to actually pull the flat file for the depth gauges and only use it about every 3-4 sharpening to prevent the chain from getting too aggressive. Your guide marks are for a standard 30* crosscut tooth. If you look at a true milling chain, you’ll see they are like 10-15* angle on the tooth for making much longer noodles. I’ve started to actually put a 20* angle on my chains for more multi-purpose use.

Good call on pulling the flat file.

Got the future and it works great for me. Try holding the base of the handle down at the edge of your table with a large C clamp. Works good even if you don’t have your vice.

Good call on the C-Clamp. My goal is to rearrange the wood yard slightly and have this spool nearby vs out of the way. I think if it were more convenient I would use it for prep a lot more than I do.

If I was you learn with a hand file first , is my way . Not to hurt your feeling I can tell by the sound your not sharp all teeth right . As a logger bent over from back of chainsaw with a single hand 🤚 file . Remember own your top tooth cut the wood 🪵. It come with time and practice to sharpen a chain . I don’t mark a chain to sharp at because won’t you come around you will see the sharp tooth you start that . Hand file last a long time if you look after them from the rain and damp weather. Good. Steel rust easy , them you know it good steel in the file . 😊

By the sound you got a lot of chainsaw chains to practice onto . There millions of U tube way to sharpen your chainsaw chain on line . Remember us logger own use a hand file in the wood 🪵. Easy to carry around on our belt , own take few min to bring our teeth 🦷 back to cutting timber . One chain can easy cut over 100 cords of pulp wood 🪵 8’6” , firewood the same if the wood is clean from dirty from forestry equipments. Remember firewood 🪵 is junk wood 🪵 in the lumber trade , now just chips up burn 🔥 in the mill boiler or sent oversea to UK market per ton . Premium hardwood logs 🪵 go to mills by the grade of timber. Our big money 💴 is in big fir and cedar in millions per load of logs on a logging ship 🚢. Remember chainsaw in the logging trade is for big timber now , wood processor cut small and med stuff a lot faster and more SAFETY them chainsaw guys .
