Well Steve! I want to thank you. I watched your entire video series, Parts 1 through 7, and I can proudly say It was a success. Even though the chainsaw you worked on was an MS290, and mine is a 029 Super, They are very similar in make. My only concern with the rebuild was the fuel line, and the way it make's that bend around the back side of the carburetor. It worked just the same, which I am surprised. My chainsaw sat in my shed for over 10-years after giving it to a back yard small engine repair guy that said he repaired it, well he did not. When I took it apart he had run a common gas line from the tank to the, using a grommet to seal it from the tank, instead of using a replacement line. Instructional video's like your's is why I use KZbin. Thanks, Great Job, and keep them coming. I am a Handy Man and my Mother use to call me MacGyver

You're very welcome. The tight bend in the line surprised me too. On some aftermarket replacement lines, you might have to trim a tiny bit of that thickened end. But if you're not experiencing fuel starvation, you're probably good to go. Not all my videos might be your cup of tea, but I'd appreciate it if you'd subscribe just the same. I'm trying to get to my first KZbin recognized milestone of 10k subscribers. Thanks for watching!

For future reference, the Walbro carb on the MS290-390's default factory settings is 1 turn out on both screws from stop without limiters on the carb.

STEVE I HAVE A MS 290 SAW ALSO AND I HAVE NEVER TAKEN OFF THE CARB, YES THERE IS TWO NUTS HOLDING THE CARB ON, BUT THERE IS ANOTHER PLATE THAT GOES OVER THOSE TWO NUTS BEFORE YOU INSTALL THE AIR BREATHER,. I DID NOT SEE YOU REPLACE IT, I HAVE NEVER TAKEN MY CARB OFF BUT DID PUT THAT PLATE BACK ON OVER THE TWO NUTS BEFORE THE AIR FILTER WAS INSTALLED... MAYBE SOMETHING TO LOOK AT???

Thanks. I'll check out the parts breakdown and see what I can find out.

yours didn't have 2 taps to hold carb before you put breather on ?

pinched fuel line behind carb? It will start then stall out...

set to factory settings... turn idle up till it stays running,set low speed for maximum rpm lower idle to reasonable level again set low speed for maximum rpm. open low speed until idle just starts to drop.. set high speed for light 4 stroking .. done

Any thought on what could be done to repair a broke off bar oiler feed nipple on the main case of 029. I don't have the broke off piece or I would epoxy it back on. I got this saw as a basket case and this issue might be why no one wanted to deal with it. Replacing case is expensive. Any thoughts on what would seal up with the delivery elbow from pump and drill into the case and epoxy it on to the case?
@stevewatr4 жыл бұрын
I'd go to a hardware store that stocks a good assortment of fittings and start looking through the various barbed adapters . Maybe you'll spot somthing you can modify to work. If your going to rely on epoxy, be sure to clean and prep the surface. Any oil residue may compromise the bond.

Steve Watroba I have the case/engine torn down. I was thinking if I found a bolt that would slide in and seal into the delivery elbow that I could cut off leaving some threads. Drill the center for an orifice, round the entry end into elbow. Drill/tap into the area where it broke off and thread it in with some blue lock tight. What ya think?
@stevewatr4 жыл бұрын
@@magicone9327 might be worth a shot. If you use a fine thread bolt maybe you could tap the case to accept the bolt. Try and drill the hole as large as possible to minimize restriction. Don't over tighten anything. If you get some epoxy putty you could encase the elbow and bolt in the stuff to strengthen and help seal it. You can file off any areas in the way after it dries.

Steve Watroba thanks, the hole that is original is only 1/16" diameter. I talked with the service department at local Stihl shop. He said he has never done this but thought it could work. I wish I knew what the original looked like. This basket case is starting to make me a basket case. My 038 is different. Anyway as soon as the elbow shows up I will then have the info I need to make the nipple length and diameter. I keep wondering how this got broken originally. The only clue I found in all the mess was a broken off and battered oil pump volume screw and it's housing in the bottom of the gear case. Whatever happened something rattled around in there and pounded the engine oil pump mount area. Didn't come with the oil pump on it so it's anyone's guess as to what would have caused that to explode. Maybe screws backed out of the pump and they or it began the problem. Oh well it's a challenge and perseverance will get this fixed. Thanks for your videos and advise!

Steve Watroba I got the oil delivery elbow. Had to drill the orifice by hand as no way to get any drill into the confined space. Dental drill would be great. Used a brass wire feed tip for the replacement nipple. Chucked it up into drill, spun it and cut it to length with hack saw blade. Drilled the hole from .035 to 1/16" which was the original bore. Chucked the nipple up to a point where the jaws could be used as a guide to cut the groove for the O ring. Finished the groove with a drill bit wrapped with 400 grit. It worked super! The nipple already had 1/4-20 tread on it so I tapped the orifice and wound it in. Perfect!

Hi Steve ,cool to mentioned in your video . The low speed mixture sounds pretty close ,whatever the setting was when it started and idled, try turning the high speed screw out 1/8 "richer more fuel "at time and see if that bog goes away . Be careful doing any long high rpm busts with out bar and chain due to over rev. I agree the diaphragm looked questionable, they become less pliable over time and will effect performance. Take care, as always, enjoyed

Cool to be mentioned , is what I meant ,ha

i came back to finish watching,this is the best its run so far. i really thought you had it by replacing the missing nuts. that diaphragm is the pulse for fuel,and i wonder if it being deformed is causing your too lean issue? it sounds like it is too lean upon acceleration.......
@stevewatr6 жыл бұрын
I agree. My dilemma is, do I buy a walbro rebuild kit, or for the same money, buy a new chinese carb.
@rogeroconnor51826 жыл бұрын
i have used the china carbs on Stihl trimmers before without issue,i would just replace it
@canamrider71956 жыл бұрын
I agree with Roger. Get a new one. It is Alchemy trying to get an unknown to work like new. You don't know where you are and are going in circles. Missing a nut? Just imagine the tiny little gremlins you can't even see.

Looks like someone also lost the black plastic pre-filter that mounts near the spark plug. It's a winter/summer thing..
@joew93925 жыл бұрын
It also appears to me that someone may have switched the carburetors on this saw to an older version. Yours should be a late model with limiters. The plastic on the top of the saw indicates to me that the saw itself is a later version.

I'm noticed that the impulse line was not on the package that rubber makes my to tear down unce again the chainsaw because it was punctured and the chainsaw runs but it has no power .That after i change the carb kit .

I had a poulan chainsaw that was doing the same thing and it turned out to be a vacuum leak
@wolvenar6 жыл бұрын
This might not be relevant to this particular instance but... Something I have encountered many times is the seals on the crankshaft leaking air into the mix. Depending on how bad these seals are, I have seen from almost impossible idle, to people just racing them all the time to run, leaned out to much and burning up the saw.
@wolvenar6 жыл бұрын
Just looked back in this series and noted you already have replaced those seals. Still will leave the comment for people that stumble in at this video like I did.
@ainodekam46886 жыл бұрын
In my opinion the gaschet sealant is not doing his job and the air get into the crank case .Try red gaschet sealant and turn the screws l and h like the cover and it must run propreli .

Thanks for the advice. The diaphragm in the carburetor looks bad, so I ordered a carb kit, and want to try that first.

Never use the Chinese fuel lines on these saws, use Stihl or Oregon fuel hoses or they will kink and cut off the fuel..
