I have two neighbors, older dudes. Neither of them just can't resist the sound of chainsaw. It's like a mating call or something to them. If I sometimes saw some firewood at my backyard it will take no more than 20 minutes max when both of them start their saws at their backyards.

That was far better than the cheap cord powered chain saw I bought from Lowes years back. The work I needed it to do was far from heavy duty and it couldn't handle even that. For someone who doesn't do what you do for a living I was pretty impressed with how well that Stihl cut. Thanks for the demonstration.

For limbs that small I would use the Stihl GTA26. A "great" little saw with a 4" bar. I've had mine for a couple years now, and have cut almost 2 cords of small limbs for firewood. It will cut more than 4" with a double cut, and not think twice about it. Finally changed the first chain out last week from all that cutting. Thought that the lack of an oiler would be a problem, but I'm glad it runs dry. The saw stays clean and I can clean it out with an old toothbrush. Just dribble on some of the "special oil" that comes with it on the chain before you put it away. They even have a "holster" for it now that fits on your belt. Would get one, but I'm left handed and that make it awkward to carry. It doesn't have a "holder ring" on it, but you could epoxy on one for a lanyard.

I still have my hand saw from 20 years ago. Never did I go up a tree without it. I paid well over 100 for mine back then and it is still a beast. Not sure what a good cost today. Side note, the only ones I ever seen complain about them were using really cheap ones.

I have a stihl msa120 for pruning and small removals in dense urban areas. Done about 30 removals with it and I don't hesitate to start just a little earlier than my local noise ordinance would allow for a gas saw. I can bike with it slung over my shoulder with climbing gear in paneer bags. If I had to haul gas around it'd be a bit too much for the bike. The looks on people's faces can be pretty entertaining. Maybe I'm one of those people you're talking about with a personality defect :) You covered the drawbacks well. I'd recommend it to homeowners and hobbyists, particularly for carving. One plus (I guess) that I didn't see mentioned in comments is that it can be a very approachable saw for teaching a newbie. I've taught several of my younger friends saw basics with it, and a gas saw would've definitely been more intimidating for those that have rarely used power tools.

I looked at the Stihl battery saws, way over priced and were not rated that good by most reviewers. I just bought a Dewalt 60 volt brushless and love it. Very pleased with it's ability so far. Bought it after reading lots of reviews and watching KZbin videos and it seemed to be the top rated battery saw available today. Another added benefit, I can use the 60v battery in my 20v Dewalt tools as it is backwards compatible with the 20v systems. It automatically switches to 20v when used in a 20v tool but gives you three times the run time. So since I have a dozen or so Dewalt 20v tools it was an added bonus.

We tryed out both batterie brands when getting ready to do a big hospital job where quite was most important and found that the husqvarna far more powerful and felt more like a normal topper to use, yes its no high power chogging saw but even for medium sized branches its brilliant and having got a 7.5st female apprentice it's brilliant to teach with being so light. Looking forward to seeing a comparison between this saw and the little echo when it comes back 👍

The whole thing about the neighbor reminded me of a service call I did not to long ago, a guy in a rather troublesome trailer park called me to change a starter in his vehicle , I setup shop onsite as usual ,have my truck parked out of the road in a small patch of grass as he recommended and a lady from the trailer next door came out almost immediately raising all kinda of hell and cussing over the noise of my battery impact driver I'm like...ok, then a while later I got back with the new starter parked in the same place and a lady across the street apparently backs her suburban into this guy's damn yard to leave her house I suppose because she called me everything but santa clause for being parked there as she attempted to take 180 yards to back up into the street, later when I was done the guy asked if I ran into any problems I said none other than your wonderful loving neighbors,he rolled his eyes laughed and said and I quote" yeah I think this place is government housing for psycho cunt$" then as I was leaving the trailer park some jackass kid slung his skateboard infront of my truck intentionally I'm like yeah I have to get out of here before future history books have to compare me to Charles Manson.

I use mine on a 10" bar for just pruning work only. It is quicker than a 200t for these jobs as you don't have to start the saw each time. It does have its problems but I do love it. We have smaller trees in the UK too as well :-)

My 2cents... seems Electric saw don’t want to start spinning under load. They need to spin up just like 2 tenths of a second. It takes a bit to get used to not shoving it in a cut and keep hitting the trigger expecting a gas engines low end torque. Once full throttle in a cut you can’t let off or push hard. If you stall it you have to back off a bit trigger it then cut again.

My Silky and an MSA 200 are my go to choices for Sat and Sun mornings before 9:30-10:00. You should give the 200 a try (with a nicer chain maybe) before totally writing them off. You might think it cuts into production but so does your groundies trying to calm down angry neighbors. Some days its also nice to not smell like 2 cycle exhaust.

Thanks for the review August. I have a 536 li xp from the other guys and I must admit I love it. Definitely is a time and place saw and there is a learning curve to cutting with it. However, in a timed cut you need to add in the starting of the 200t to the total time so is it that much faster? Ever taken 3, 4 or 5 SOB pulls on it in a less then ideal position while pruning? Thought so...give the little guy a chance

Great as always August. The thing i like most about the MSA 160 is not needing to put on your ear protectors. Down side of working electric is to have the reflex to always put on the chain guard... With a petrol powered chainsaw you hear it running and seem to be more aware of the danger it has (if this makes any sense :)).

Been in the businesses since 81. never been seriously hurt . There is no way I would climb into into a cotton wood with this small diameter. I would never go above a 5 inch trunk. Don't want to see you die. I am in grants pass I have been sending many referrals to you in the last 3 years . I am scaling down.I have owned tim's tree service here in grants pass, since 1985. I look at every job, but time has made aware of my limitations. I am specialising in pruning now, I have 2 bucket trucks. These have kept me in business longer. I learned pruning from working in a nursery Owned by japanese americans. I worked with them for 4 years. They our our better half! I am 63 years old and like pruning. My favorite jobs are fruit tree pruning and ornamental shade tree pruning.

Could not imagine a construction project without a battery powered tools, they are so handy. It is only a matter of time when electricity is the main power supply for arborist work. No toxic fumes, very cheap to operate, no gasoline required... healthier and energy efficient option.

Great video, you are still young strong and in your prime trust me years fly past, when your young you just want to kick on because money is your motivation as it was for myself.Back in the day we did not have the choice of equipment that is available today I would have given my right arm for T200 top saw back then.I recently sold mine to a young lad who kept pestering me for it as for the last 3o yrs I have done very little tree work as I switched to construction work as the money was far better back then. The cold,rain,frost,snow, has taken its toll athritus bad knees elbows back,,, ,the guy that said hard work never hurt no one? NEVER did any !! Hence I'm an old duffer now but I'm moving and I had a huge leylandi in my garden and dident want it to crab the sale of my house,my friend has got a sthil battery saw and he's never stops banging on about how good it is and as I couldn't fell the tree because of where it was situated I was forced to climb it. The saw was not a top saw but it was a sthil battery saw what a brilliant bit of kit I liked it so much I'm buying one, one battery got me down till the the tree was about 14 inches in diameter then I had to break out the petrol saw and finish the job as like you I was getting impatient as the battery saw was struggling.Battery saw was great for me and not to be underestimated it would have it's uses for you I'm sure in the domestic market but as they say times money !!

So utily worker here, The milwaukee 16 inch has beaten the stIHL 160 gasser as well as most battery saws on heavy creosote wood poles. day in and out. Even heavily treated green Poles. But its definitely not a tree saw for arborists because of it needing 2 hands for pruning and being a tad long in design as well. Just two cents of nothing... I dont do tree work however statistically there have been more left handed injuries since the advent of the one handed saw, BE safe...!! SMART AWARE FOCUSSED EQUIPPED>. These saws aren't meant to be used one-handed, really. They're meant for work up in the tree, so they're smaller, but they still have two handles for two hands, it's just easier to use one hand. My boss used to yell at me for even thinking about using one hand. August is his own boss, he's not gonna yell at himself and he's been doing this forever, but technically he's doing it "wrong". I trust him to do ok but I wouldn't let a newbie do that.

I tried for years to get a 160t. I gave up and bought a husq version, Seems I use the dewalt more often for light climbing/topping and its 1/4 the price and generic batteries are on amazon super cheap.I also like my 56volt ego 16 inch saw... works great after getting rid of the narrow kerf and getting a normal bar and chain. A little slower chain-speed but tons of torque.

Ive cut a few trees in my time, but never for living. That said early last year a lot of small trees and huge hedge had to heavily cut back in a small residential car park, that just happens to be right outside my window. I wasn't looking forward to noise and mess that it would cause. To my surprise the the man doing the job used the very first battery saw I had seen, the very one you just showed, it seems to work very well for him, he had just two batteries and the saw and a hedge trimmer, battery charges in his truck. In a cramped residential are like this battery is the way to go. No point in pissing the neighbours off, not when there are likely around 10 or more ready to make your life impossible anyway.

August, that saw was clearly pinching in the cut. It is a smaller width bar and chain so it will jam up more and it is likely that you need to adapt to the different style of saw and its use. I have both battery and petrol saws and I use them where they are best suited,

You might try resting the body of your camera against the branch for more rigid support. It should remove a lot of the wiggle/squiggle out of the video. Nice job closing that gate Adam... I kept waiting to see cottonwood. Apparently the cottonwood wherever he's working (California?) doesn't look like my cottonwood in the Illinois Valley. I was thinking perhaps some kind of birch? Another thing I don't have. I'm well past the middle of my eighth decade, and pulling starting ropes has begun to do me in pretty quickly. I have both a little Stihl (don't remember the model off hand) and a Harbor Freight battery chain saw. The battery saw is actually a bit heavier than the Stihl, but for most of what I need to do these days, it does a pretty good job. The Stihl is definitely faster, and it seldom takes more than six pulls for the first start (with premixed fuel). Sadly, there are times when those six or so pulls are just more than I want to deal with.

I had a mini mac 10 that was the loudest little saw I ever owned! That was the best advertising i ever had. The 1st stump I ever had ground had a straight pipe exhaust. I had an extra muffler in my garage that I offered the old gentleman. He said no thanks, that’s advertising. After that I made sure all the neighbors could hear me work. Your the best! I’m not a production climber but I’ve been running the husqvarna t536lixp and it runs nearly equal to my t012. I’m a stihl guy but I’ve used the little husqvarna up two 12in wild cherry, 14in oak. Also keep in mind your running a hot rod 200... the msa160=012av in my humble opinion it’s the t536lixp is close to the stock 201t I use now... apples to oranges and monkey beaver likes his orange juice because it’s saw king enriched in goodness? I was a stihl person until I got my hands on a Mcculloch Mac Mini 35. For only 32cc the saw can handle almost anything you throw at it. Though it isn't quiet. It is loud, very loud. It doesn't really have a muffler, it has what is called a power-stack, it basically is just an exhaust re-director. It is also very light. For a top handle all metal saw from the mid 70's at about 10lb. it makes a great trail maintenance saw. Burying the blade in oak, you have to push pretty hard to bog it down with a non-safety chain hand filed.

August, I’m loving what you are doing on your channel and wanted to share a thought on the battery powered Stihl msa 160 t saw. It would seem that a normal set of cutting teeth on the little saw might work better if they were square ground as opposed to normal chain saw angled profile. I feel it might offer less strain on the motor and thus give a faster cut. Also, based on a dirt bike technique, could you load up the chain itself with a wet type of graphite such as “Dry-Slide” or something similar to see if it would help the little saw.

The Truckin Tree Guy if you want it centered then you can just relieve some of the adhesive in the middle of the mount to accommodate that ridge line on the protos. My mount is customized flattened pvc epoxied on, to create a flat purchase point for the GP mount.

I tried one of these saws out on a reduction it's nice and light and it worked really well for that kind of pruning but I wouldn't bother with it on a dismantle job.

Just came home from unlocking four storm-blow trees that were locked together like a teepee. It was extremely dicey, and I can't even imagine using a battery powered saw for that. Indoor chainsaw carving, on the other hand....🤔😊😎👍👌

Lately we've just been doing a ton of clean up and upsweep + ball moss removal on a lot of oak. Been thinking about getting a little husky cordless to carry around with me. 90% of the stuff ive been cutting is the size of my wrist nothing larger than my forearm. Ive been going all day on the same tank of gas

I now own the husqvarna battery top handle I recommend it but don't bother getting the biggest battery it's overkill and really heavy.

This is a great video and review. I found it as I'm looking for a battery powered small chainsaw for simply pruning the big trees in my own home garden. Your 200 chainsaw is perfect for the bigger jobs! I'm really impressed with your hand saw - what brand is it please? It's amazing!! For that, the 200 version might be better... stronger, AND available in North America😉...and for those on horseback, it might sheath nicer, better balanced, and less knocking on the pony🐴

Off-topic but important: August has been climbing since the dinosaurs and he knows what he wants, but if you're a beginner, don't climb a tree with yer rope set like he has it for the first half. The little branch he's looped around will carry his static weight, but if he fell any distance, he'd probably keep on going once the rope hit the branch and hauled it right off. He's prolly not gonna fall, but if you're a beginner, don't you go taking that chance. I climbed for two years and I'd only use that branch to get me up if I had to, and never to work off of.

I've found good chain tension to be paramount in how these electric saws cut...hate the way they feel going through the wood like more bouncy than gas power and makes me want to always use two hands. Plus when the battery drops near half charge it hates to do thick cuts.

i own a large garden and my mother has a small woodland area. i bought the full battery range, blower strimmer hedge cutter and chainsaw. i went with the slightly better model that this one. Anyway i want to say i would never ever ever go back to petrol. these things a amazing.

EducatedClimber tried that. Couldn’t undo my years of seeking out the cross draw. And it snagged everywhere. This dangle config sucks tho to cause I gave away the vault biner that I usually keep the hand saw on.

Yeah, took me a while to get used to it too. I keep mine on my right leg and I'm able to pop the handsaw back in there almost as fast as you can stow your tophandle away! Keep it up brother, you're doing a hell of a job! - Patrick
