Took apart my STIHL trimmer after it started to bog down. Didn't find anything mechanically wrong with it. Was about to take off carb and clean it when I ran across this video. Removed the screen and that was the problem. It was nearly 100% blocked. Thank you!!

Spot on! My neighbor brought his trimmer over last night. It would start but then die. I found he forgot to mix in the 2 cycle oil on the last fill up. Once we sorted that out it ran but sounded terrible and bogged down when you hit the trigger. I was worried it might have scored the cylinder from lack of lubrication, but it looked fine with my cheap boroscope. All I could think of was to rebuild the carb, but found your video this morning. As soon as I heard the sound yours made I knew it was the same issue. Sure enough, the spark arrestor was completely clogged. Cleaned the screen and all is well! Thank you for posting this video.

@TepcoCycleRepair3 ай бұрын
Replace the diaphragm, but honestly I would just get a Amazon carb from like HIPA . It will be cheaper and easier and if it doesn't work just send it back. Reason I say that is there are one way valves in the block carb that if they got messed up you won't know, you can't replace them and you'll spend money and time rebuilding and it still won't work right. Crazy world we live in, when a new carb is cheaper.

What if the spark arrester is missing and it's bogging down?

The exhaust itself could be clogged but if the carb is adjustable it may just need adjustments. They usually fit many different engines and need to be adjusted to suit. To see if it's your exhaust, just loosen the exhaust bolts and see if it reves up then.

If yours doesn't, in this order, I would check compression, make sure the cylinder bolts to the crankcase are tight, check for spark, use a factory carb not a cheap copy. Clean air filter and exhaust. If it doesn't run after that, throw it in the garbage, probably has bad crank seals.

It is a spark arrestor, as well as a screen to stop debris from entering the combustion chamber and/or crank while it's off. Remember on a 2 stroke, with the piston at tdc, the exhaust is a straight shot to the crank.
