Most of us aren't where we want to be when it comes to preparedness. But anything you've done to be ready is still extremely beneficial. What other tips do you have for others who didn't get to their prepping goals before the election? The Discord server as well as other resources can be found here: magicprepper.com/

I agree! I’m in western NC as well. No power for 16 days. I had a small generator after the first week to power the freezer and my star link but it was not hooked to my well pump, so no water other than what I’d stored. I also thought we had enough. We used creek water to flush toilets. I had 50 gallons of water stored for 2 people. Since then I’ve bought containers for 25 more gallons. We have a propane stove so we were able to cook. I learned a lot by going through this!

Not to be that guy but if I were you I would’ve booked it to the next state over no matter how. Like that just sounds like you’re waiting for someone to come save you. Given what’s been happening with fema, we now know ain’t nobody gunna come save you not even the gov. Idk then again I’m not in that situation but again three weeks? I would’ve booked it and looted if I needed to, to satiate my family. Tf

@barbarad.517 23 күн бұрын
@@joelmarin5890 The swath of destruction made leaving the state impossible and would be placed in more danger than staying home. IN any case, the destruction was hundreds of miles wide. In my case, as most in this area, the roads were impassable due to downed power lines and trees, flood waters, washed out bridges, and standing water. This is the mountains, we are not suppose to have to deal with hurricanes. Our forecast was for 10 inches of rain and 30 MPH wind gusts. We had 30 inches and 80 mph sustained winds. I'm sure all of us learned a lot about our level of preparedness but fortunately, instead of looting to care for our family, we came together as community to help. Our road was impassable for 4 days except by ATV. Neighbors and rescue workers came immediately to check for injuries, deaths and other needs. Our house was not on the creekside and we sustained no damage except downed limbs and one lane of my road was washed into the raging creek. I have never experienced the level of connectivity and compassion in my life and am so thankful for my neighbors, the rescuers (who were there the first day with swift water rescue boats) and the thousands of volunteers who came from everywhere! It's easy to sit back and say what you would have/could have done, but until you are facing what we faced, you can never truly know. The only ones who sat at home waiting to be rescued were those who were trapped by the now raging river with washed away bridges, or their homes washed down the river and those trapped by fallen trees on their car or house. So, you go loot and pillage your neighbors if you see fit, but don't try that in a small town in Appalachia.

My biggest hope is that we don't see anything more than some small protests after Tuesday. I know that sounds silly, but I'm an optimist. We're good to go on food, water, back up power, extra lights, warm clothing, etc. As for the firearms and ammo, if I'm being hinest, if it comes down to that, I'm old and slow, I'm likely a goner. 1. For power, look into windup radios. I have a cheap one, it's $20 at ACE Hardware. It has a radio, a flashlight and a power bank I can connect my phone too. 2. For weapons, get a variety. I have a $300 revolver, 2 small cans of pepper spray, a taser, a couple pocket knives and a baton. Also double locking handcuffs. All together it's worth about $500, including the 100 rounds of ammunition I have. I am not prepping to go out, Im prepping to stay in. 3. Food. Go to food banks. I have about a months worth of food for me and my household (in total about 5 people) because I go to the food bank every few weeks. And we rotate through some of it before I go back. 4. We have a separate filter for water and live near a lake in the city. We also have bleach to treat it. We all live paycheck to paycheck, but we've managed to prep. We are prepping to stay here because between all of us we only have one working car. It just takes alternative means than just going to the store.

@jwinthepro no problem. Private food banks are great, and so is Walmart. A gallon of water is about $1.50 here in Florida. A can of vegetables or fruit is just under $1. A loaf of bread is about $2. This is all Great Value brand. It is by no means healthy for you, it is filled with chemicals and sodium, but it's better than starvation. Granted I can't afford much of anything right now and have lost 30 pounds from malnutrition in the last 8 months. I could use our preps but I fully expect something to happen after tomorrow.

@vangeneche
@vangeneche 22 күн бұрын
@@sstrongman1667 We're in northern Sweden. It snowed Oct 31st. Temps are already in the minus celsius and last winter, reached minus forty plus celsius. We had a period of economic hardship where we couldn't use electric heating and had no wood left for the fire. We survived using clothing (wool. Leave cotton and polyster/plastics alone), blankets and two small kerosene heaters. Not going to lie, it was bloody awful and I am already dreading this winter given Swedgov recently informed us our electric bills would be tripled this winter.... Plus points are, homes here tend to be built well insulated and with the severe cold in mind. Almost all have some kind of wood fireplace or stove. They do manage to keep roads remarkably clear. Because Swedes pay such high taxes they may be lynched if they don't.... Wherever folks are, stay safe and warm. Just listening to "it's hard to put food away" and if it hadn't been for my well stocked pantry last winter we'd be dead. No exaggeration. We *still* haven't caught up with that useage, but we keep trying. We have the highest food prices in the Nordics. And not that much choice when it comes to food that is actually healthy to eat. Imo, none of this will change until people rally and decide the current system is irretrievably fubared and needs restructuring. Or better still,, that we are left alone to govern our own selves. Please don't forget what is happening is happening across all the western world. Re water, in these temps, bring a rainbarrel indoors if you can or it will freeze solid and may burst on thawing. If need be you can melt snow and filter/boil it and store in the barrel. This is what we did last year and what we expect to do again.

My area was hit hard by Hurricane Helene. Who ever thought an actual hurricane would hit us ~400 miles from the ocean. This event definitely taught me where my weaknesses were. Water of course being #1. I was ok with food and thankfully it wasn’t winter. Many power lines/telephone poles were taken down, house smashed or flooded. The water system was destroyed and had to be rebuilt. Tap water is still not really safe to drink due to possible bacteria or chemicals. The preps I used most was water that I had on hand or gotten from donations off churches, businesses, FEMA.. Food I had prepped or received through donations.. My Jackery 1000 Explorer Solar generator which I used to maintain my freezer.. camping equipment like my Coleman stove, flashlights, weather radio etc. Cell phones stopped working due to no electricity to power the towers or they were destroyed in landslides or trees falling on them. They have backup generators, but ran out of fuel shortly after. I used my HAM radio and weather radio to find out important news. I had just bought that weather radio a week or so prior. I’m so glad I did. It has a crank and solar panel to provide the electricity for it to work. The battery lasted a long time and can recharge the cell phone if needed as well as use as a flashlight. However, water is what you want to have for sure. We’ll be drinking bottled water for sometime in the future. Thanks Magic Pepper for the good info.

If you are rightfully worried about getting caught up in random, post-election violence in the U.S. that could occur any time between election day and mid-January, do have the basic supplies at home that you will need so you and your household members can just shelter in place. And also have an evacuation plan, a change of clothing for each family member packed and ready to go and keep your vehicle's fuel tank at least half full at all times in case there is a sudden reason to evacuate to a safer location. And make sure, if you have pets, that they have enough food to shelter in place with you and pet carriers so they can go with you if you must evacuate. If, like many of us, you must leave home each workday to go to work or school, do plan on minimizing the time it takes to get between home and work/school and have alternative routes just in case. And avoid unnecessary errands. Do not get stuck in the drive-thru line at Starbucks or Dunkin' Donuts and be a sitting duck for a crazed shooter. Simply put, greatly reduce the time you spend away from home and are potentially in the wrong place at the wrong time if a riot breaks out or a domestic terrorist decides to go on a shooting spree or detonates a homemade truck bomb. If no random violence happens in your community during this time, consider yourself fortunate and think of the time you spent sheltering in place as a test of your preparedness training. Remind yourself that the U.S. is a very large country and if you avoid crowded places and government buildings and limit your time away from home, the odds of getting caught up in a domestic terror event greatly lessen. In November through January, we have Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day holidays. Which means a lot of people will be going through crowded airports, will be out more than usual shopping for gifts, will going to busy restaurants and bars and will attending special religious services. And terrorists consider crowds of unarmed civilians to be juicy targets. So, it will probably be safer this year and early next year to just avoid being part of these crowds. You can do your gift shopping over the internet. You can listen to a special religious service over the radio or watch one on TV. You can have holiday meals and other holiday social gatherings in private homes instead of in restaurants and bars. Just make yourself a less available target to a domestic terrorist. Worried about having enough pantry food for sheltering in place for as long as six weeks if your budget is tight and violence does break out in your community? Have you done an inventory of the food you have at home and are certain that you do not have enough food at home to provide 2000 calories per day for each teen or adult in your household for about six weeks? You could stock up on some big canisters of plain rolled oats and some multi-pack boxes of dried Ramen noodle packages. These two bland foods provide a lot of easily prepared calories at low cost. You can stretch the breakfast foods you already have by also giving each person a bowl of oatmeal. You can stretch the canned soup, canned beef stew, canned chili, canned Spam, frozen fish sticks, frozen burritos, etc. you use for lunch or dinner by serving these foods beside or as a topping over a bowl of prepared Ramen noodles. No, this will not be gourmet fare, but both oatmeal and Ramen will add a lot of calories to each meal at low cost and let you stretch your other more expensive foods for a lot more meals.

Can I just "plus up" your excellent reminders. So few folk smoke nowadays that few people have matches or lighters readily to hand. Can I just suggest folk make sure they have a big supply of matches and/or lighters. These items are "as cheap as chips" to obtain. Put them in a waterproof container along with some candles and a manual can-opener or Swiss army type knife. It's amazing how many matches you go through when you are lighting stoves to cook food or lighting candles. If you have enough you might be able to help out friends/relations/neighbours.

@@angelaslatzer9263 DONT mess with those flimsy water bottles by the case- I buy the military 5-gallon water "jugs" heavy duty plastic with good screw on lid- you can put insulation in and around the jugs I put in the garage to keep from freezing-when i had an apartment i used to put 2 together with a small piece of lumber as a "table top" with couple holes and long zip ties to hold the wood to the water container tops-at handles- perfect size for a small dresser and throw a small hand towel, cardboard, table cloth over it and it conceals your water and at the right height- i put a puppy pad underneath so if by 1 in a million chance it leaks or gets a bullet hole in it- the floor is protected small leaks- they have the 2.5 gallon military jugs out now, same container- just not dresser worthy but much more easier to store and carry in a vehicle- take inside at night so they dont freeze- water must be a top priority even before food, radios, etc

Although I really do appreciate your tips and your encouragement for people to be prepared, I do not fear the shtf scenarios. You may be asking yourself why. Well, part of it is probably because I am 70 years old and I have lived a very good life and if it ended today I would not be disappointed one bit. But mostly it's because I have always believed that people are either slaves or prisoners or both because no one was consulted before being thrown into this thing called life on earth. So therefore, we have no allegiance to anyone or anything and it is a cruel joke that people have this driving urge to stay alive when we have very little control over most of life anyway. A wise man once said that a good way to live this life is to "do the best you can and don't take life too serious." That is exactly what I do. Have a nice day.😊

Seriously, if your back is against the wall to the point you 'can't' afford much of anything, then get a part time job. Doesn't matter if it doesn't pay much, some is better than none. Most of us spend a lot of time online, drop that habit and invest in yourself, instead. Get your priorities in order. Do you really need netflix? There's a huge difference between 'want' and need. If you truly can't afford to buy food, then your priorities are out of whack. Being a guy, sure, I've gotten into a hole a time or two over the years. Dug myself out with a draconian budget, and sticking to it. It works. It's to fun, it sucked, actually. But it worked. If you don't have $400.00 in savings to turn a flat tire from a crisis to merely an event, you need to realize that 'hope' is not a plan. You need to be able to cash a reality check, not bounce it.

Wise words MP! Do what you can with what you already have. As for communications, even just a AM, FM, SSB (singleside band), SW (short wave), weather, multi-band radio and a scanner would be good for at least information gathering. Erik of Farpoint Farms, in NC, talked about his old analog scanner picking up all the activities because even law enforcement and fire rescue had to switch to analog radios to be able to coordinate with the non-profit, disaster recovery teams such as Samaritan's Purse in Western NC. Even a cheap boafeng can be used to scan the 2 meter and 70 Centimeter bands for any activity around you, which may alert you to possible bad actors using the same bands close by. Also, a cheap $60 CB and good antenna, set up 10 feet or more above the ground can give a good range of two-way comms of possibly 10 or more miles.

If you can't afford one of those fancy solar generator contraptions, you could buy (2 each) 12 volt deep cycle batteries at Wally World for about $220 to create a 12 volt or 24 volt power supply. About 4oo watts or more worth of solar panels, possibly even used ones for much better affordability could be sufficient. A voltage regulator between the solar panels to batteries to prevent the batteries from over charging, and a decent quality 2000-watt sine wave inverter without all the bells and whistles. A cheap voltage meter of some sort to let you know your available power level in the batteries is also helpful. A timer on the freezer/refrigerator, if you are running one of those, to shut off the fridge beginning around sun set to sun rise the next day is a big power saver. That is the time during which the fridge is less likely to be more frequently opened for access and the inside temperature only rises a few degrees during that long period of time, depending on the efficiency of the freezer/ fridge insulation and outside temperature. During the winter, a freezer/fridge may not have to run very much at all, depending on your winter location. Keeping your fridge in an unheated food storage room also prevents it from having to run as often as it would inside of the heated living (kitchen) area. That's how I do things here with the somewhat colder and very long winters here at 8000 feet above sea level of the Rocky Mountains. I am running off of a house sized solar power supply and this fridge timer method saves me a lot of energy to run other things, if need be, or an extra fridge/freezer even.

When we moved to our new location I chose it for many reasons, one was the year around river that flowes thru town. I can drop buckets down and pull up water and filter it. In addition to that storred water is the groundwork of my water security. About a year ago when I got up and walked into the bathroom to take my shower nothing came out of the shower head. Hmm. I started asking what's going on. I found out there was a broken water pipe and they were working on it. A couple hours later the water started flowing.
