I think the thing with John is just the ability to get a very fast alternate motion. It looks like John uses a type of elbow technique but there are other motions that go very fast. We did a lesson recently on reverse dart wrist motion which can also get in that speed range ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIjYeJ6Onc9jipo ). A version of this is what I'm using here, so this is worth experimenting with if you want that aggressively fast alternate sound.

best cover i've seen of this very challenging solo - can you do a tutorial of that crazy run please?
@troygrady4 ай бұрын
Maybe down the line you never know! But as I wrote in the description, this is really just a guesstimate of what was played. So I don't think it makes much sense to show players how to do something note for note when I essentially made it up. :). The real key here is getting fast picking motion and good hand sync, and that's much more in line with what we usually teach on the channel. Once you have those, almost any scalar line will get the Sykes sound. So I would focus on the technique more so than the notes.

We've used this occasionally. Our recent lesson on reverse dart wrist motion ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIjYeJ6Onc9jipo ) includes a detailed breakdown of why this can sometimes be necessary to make certain picking motions work correctly. i.e. It flows from the choice of joint motion.

was Sykes a trail edge picker?
@troygrady4 ай бұрын
I believe so. In fact, on the studio recording, the melody notes at the end almost sound like an octave up pitch shift effect has been applied. I think that's right hand harmonics from the index finger. There's a little bit of that in this clip too - it's just what happens with trailing edge.
@gigantedocil4 ай бұрын
Awesome solo! Do you have any videos on picking the entirety of Eugene's Trick Bag? If the legend is true it was all alternate picked so Steve Vai could mimic fingerpicking. If that is indeed the case I think there's a lot of opportunity there because there are so many odd combination of notes across strings the escape motions are all over the place.
@troygrady4 ай бұрын
We haven't covered that specifically but you can check out any of the lessons on our channel covering double escape (DBX) motion, because that's what is required. Martin Miller's technique, for example, is a double escape technique. So is Molly Tuttle's.

Troy - would love to hear some tips on how to use this trailing edge grip. I naturally pick with the leading edge, but I've always been intrigued by this method, but I can never seem to get it to work.
@troygrady4 ай бұрын
Great question! Trailing edge isn't something you do on its own. It's a thing you do only when the rest of your form makes it impossible to get smooth pick attack any other way. So in other words it's based on the type of joint motion you're trying to use. A great example of this is our lesson on reverse dart wrist motion ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIjYeJ6Onc9jipo ). Many of the fastest reverse dart players use trailing edge because the arm position this requires makes the required pickslant impossible with an index finger grip for certain hand/finger types. We explain in detail in the lesson.

Is that downward pick slant? It looks a bit perpendicular, but hard to see 🤓
@troygrady4 ай бұрын
This is a double escape wrist technique and the pick is mostly vertical for this. To know what kind of technique a player is using, you really want to look at the motion path, not the appearance of the pick, because lots of cases are ambiguous otherwise. Here's an overview of how escape motion works and why the path of the motion is really what makes different types of joint motion different: ( troygrady.com/primer/reference/escape-motion-reference/ )

Troy SMOKES for sure. But I don't think anyone really knows exactly what Sykes played there. It's so buried in the mix. I'd bet that as long as you play a fast ascending run in the key of E and then end it with the one part that's really memorable-the sequence of notes that concludes with those high bends-the average listener wouldn't notice the difference
@troygrady4 ай бұрын
Yep, that's exactly what I think. There's isolated guitar on KZbin but it's only marginally more helpful at figuring out what was going on. Again, not a knock, they got a take that sounded great in the mix and took it. I wouldn't redo that either, the general energy level along with the melody bit at the end is too good!
@temorinkaari4 ай бұрын
