Omfg. I’m so happy you’ve stumbled (finally ;)) on gil Scott heron. In my opinion this is one of the most important songs, and artists, of our time and the man was a goddamn genius. Delve into everything. You will not regret it.

Wow, I was enjoying your Van Halen videos, and then, I found this Gil Scott-Heron reaction! As a young hard rock and metal fan who branched out and got into jazz, funk, and hip-hop in the late '80s and through the '90s, Gil was a hero to me. His 1971 album, "Pieces of a Man," truly changed my life. That entire album deserves a reaction (this song is the first track). Gil had so many great songs with deep, thought-provoking lyrics!

I was an 11 year old white kid in the suburbs and I saw him on SNL doing " Johannesburg ". A anti-aparthied song. It was the first year, 1975, and Richard Pryor was the host! Check out " Angel Dust " " We Almost Lost Detroit "

Good on ya for tapping into brother Gil. The brothers I met in the Marine Corps (68-71) turned me on to GSH and I've been listening to him ever since. Gil once said in an interview, "When we said the revolution won't be televised, it's because the first place that change takes place is in the mind." Check out more of his stuff. I definitely recommend "Message to the Messengers"

Loved your comments! I’m 73 yrs old and grew up with things that he is talking about. Today’s generation needs to be “woke”! His poetry and music is what should be heard today- it’s timeless. I feel so sad seeing our young black men and women not showing respect, not even to themselves. Our men are calling our women and girls bitches-and everything is sexual. We have lost so much of ourselves and the music industry has taken our youth to the gutter. It’s really a disgrace!

This is one of my favourite tracks ever...I love Gil Scott Heron. I can't pay for a reaction just now, but could you do a track from The Last Poets most recent album, the track is called Understand What Black Is..there is a video of them doing it live. I think you might love it...you can hear the lyrics better on the audio tho I think. It's beautiful ❤

I heard this in the 1970's, first as a poem and then sound, on student radio - and we all knew what he was saying - equality for all. Over the next fifty year were got 'equality of opportunity' but the 'race hustlers' for some odd reason still think its the 1960's. Where I'm from this song could almost have been the theme tune leading up to the land march of 1975. There was a lot of legitimate angst and anger of the ongoing loss of Maori land. A very wise women named Dame Whina Copper lead a 1000km walk to our Parliament to sort it out. And by the time she arrived 5000 people had joined her. She presented the government with a petition signed by 60000. I watched this on my black and white tv. So this revolution was live and it lead to the establishment of the Waitangi Tribunal that hears grievances and recommends reparations for breached to our founding document - the treaty of Waitangi. Still a great track, but its message is not as relevant in 2024

HERON [Heh Run] The man was a genius, cut from the same cloth as George Carlin, minus the swearing! I once knew a young woman ( with gorgeous legs) who, like myself, would have been at home in the 60s but had an eclectic taste in music. She talked about Heron but I had trouble finding his music (Spoken word? Jazz? Where?) I finally found "RE-RON" on vinyl..... I've been a fan ever since!

Sheer brilliance! And, i disagree about needing to be from his geberation to understand it! Everything he says in this brilliant poem still applies today, from corporate hegemony, a corrupted media, and cops murdering black men in the streets... it may even be more poignant than it was when he released it.

Black music in the early 70's was revolutionary, political, powerfull, visionary..Today sadly the ruling system managed to change the black music more and more to commercial garbage, most of today's black music is sadly just some rich sell out rappers make video clips of bunch of women and cars.... it is so sad...the ruling system doesnt want the people to think about such music, the system prefer the people to turn off their brains and just listen to commercial crap and not at all to be politically active

125th and Lenox Ave is Harlem not the Bronx. You;re just learning about him in 2024 because this is the first time you have taken a serious look at music other than you favorite genre or two would be my guess. The point being except rare occasions no one was hiding this music from you. You just weren't looking. You can 100% unpack this without living in his time. Most of the references are culturally significant enough to be burned into the collective consciousness . Give it another listen you might be surprised. While I've had a mostly different American experience than him and the target audience the music is understandable and relatable in part due to my economic situation growing up and by the mere fact I'm part of the proletariat.

No idea why you're just learning about him now. As a 40+ white Australian male it's quite surprising! Perhaps the media tried to hide him? Don't want any younger generations begin to think for themselves... 🙄 Unfortunately that was so often the mindset. And I found your video by searching for reactions to this song... And there's so few! Gil had so much to say as both a beatnik poet and flautist.
