One thing I loved was that after having the Roy death scene, the next person Caz speaks to is Finlay. It's great that he stays silent so long. But the fact that it's Finlay, who has been tough love and nothing else the whole time, but upon realizing what was going she stops and offers an attempt at emotional support for the first time is *amazing*. Great way to give her a cool character arc.

the differences in gameplay and commentary when Allison is at the wheel are very fun. hope we get more regular games with Allison driving now that she has a new machine!

Just discovered this game last week. I am familiar with the other Chinese Room games, and was really excited for this- I found it their best one yet! I knew to expect a core of emotional tragedy, but it struck me just how good the acting was and how it illustrates the tragedy- Caz, Finley, Brodie, Roy, all real ones. Thank you for giving it a good showing. And(spoilers for ending follow) I really dig your interpretation of the last voiceover from Suze, how it’s what she wanted to say to Caz but was unable to communicate. It rings super true especially considering a previous Chinese Room project Everyone Goes To the Rapture (you said you had played a little of it). That game also has a major theme of the gap between what we want to communicate and what we actually communicate. Yeah, it’s the story of an apocalypse through light, but it’s also the story of a couple who cannot communicate with the people around them, or with each other, because of language, perception, the burden of past events. I hope you come back to that one because I would say it’s as poignant as this (even if it is more of a walking simulator).

When Gina quipped about Caz not getting to eat his Christmas dinner, it occurred to me, could this be considered a Christmas game, the way people consider Die Hard to be a Christmas movie?
@jonathanmcginley812814 күн бұрын
Nope, because it’s set shortly after Christmas. It’s in the wiki if you want to fact check me.

The other achievement along with "Still Wakes the Deep" was "Walking Simulator."

Two things. The final area was called The Derrick. Derrick is the term on an oil rig for the support for the drilling apparatus, but it is also an alternate term for crane, with an interesting history. See Thomas Derrick was an executioner during the Elizabethan era in England. Specifically he was a hangman. Cranes of the derrick design resemble gallows, so the name stuck. So at the end very end Caz is not just walking to the drilling apparatus, he is walking to his own death. Second, one interpretation of the game that I like is that Caz was lost to the North Sea during the opening sequence. It's awful hard to survive a soaking in the North Sea in December and he certainly would not be up and about anytime soon. The events of the game are him processing his death and coming to recognize that when death comes it is not something that can be fought. As he says at the end, "We never stood a chance." Death cares nothing for how much you want to live, how much you have to live for. When the time comes, it comes.

If you guys are interested in a similar but unimaginably bleaker game you should try out Mouthwashing. Somewhat similar premise but with the insanity dialed up to eleven.
