What I've understood so far... 1,4,5 = major 2,3,6 = minor 7 = diminished and whenever someone talks about a minor key they are talking about the 6th chord (which is a minor) from a major key. All the modes are just the positions of the chord in a major key . Please tell me if this is correct and reply if I'm wrong, I really wanna get my head around this!! Keep up the lessons Steve nice explantions and examples!! :)

That gets you into relative majors and minors. So the C scale (Major) if you skip down 3 1/2 steps (or notes), you find the A(minor). The B, the Bb and the A. A good example of how it work in the real world: Cat Steven's "Wild World" is in D (major). Beth Orton does it in Bm. D, skip down 3 notes (or go up to get the major). Db/C# (depending on key), C, to B (minor). And that sums up 90% of everything i know on music theory.

I watched this video a year ago or so .. and I couldnt grasp much of it... i knew i have to go through all scalar shapes and roots fluently... i wasnt ready for applicable mode knowledge... i learned scalar shapes and somewhat know a lil abou roots... then i am trying to break the scales patterns and be more musical....and now you are making absolute sense steve... if someone is deadicated to the instrument and understands english... you almost give complete knowledge of every minute details in your free videos... i hv never had a paid class or paid online material... because you bring it all for free.. thanks mate.. cheers... you are a gem

Steve is probably the best teacher I have ever come across. I've had an electric guitar since I am 19 years old (more than 20 years ago) and I never picked it up and stuck to my acoustic because I just couldn't understand what to play and how scales related to chords, keys, etc. I had tried other lessons and nothing ever stuck. The fretboard was a mystery. I stumbled across Steve on KZbin and I instantly understood modes without even understanding anything else which is a relative miracle. This was after seeing a ton of other videos and not understanding anything. That's how I knew Steve was the teacher for me. I signed up for his Masterclasses and, after the full theory class, for the first time in my life, I understand what your options are on the fretboard and why they are options. It's an awesome feeling and I am now excited to play guitar every day as well as music composition in general. Steve has a special knack for making complex subjects understandable through a consistent teaching style and targeted repetition. I owe him a great deal. Thank you!

Steve fantastic lesson it’s been a lightbulb moment for me! The main point is to not overthink what you’re playing. Find out the major key your in and use Triads and arpeggios for melody and scales to add colour nots from the various modes within the major scale your in. This is exactly how I told my son about how it works. Thinking about major and minor as the same key totally dilutes the complexity of the keys and works very well for me. You are the first person I have seen that explains it the way I always interpreted it. Right on

Modes explained easily: G Major has 7 best friends. They love each other and play well together. Someone writes a song and uses 5 of G majors friends. The friends love the song but notice that G wasn’t invited/ used in the song ! They don’t know what to do. They ask G what they should do. G says that he is pissed he wasn’t invited and to definitely use his G major scale for soloing and riffing. One of G’s friends says “I hate to tell you this but the chord progression revolves around me “ G says that he still wants the solo to be in G major however to feel free emphasizing the notes that make sense for the chords played. But again he tells his friends to not stray from the G major scale. G is pissed and wants to find out who used all of his friends in this song and didn’t invite him. He insists that the Gmajor scale be used ,however allowed his friends chords to be emphasized with the respective notes in his scale. The person who wrote this song finds out that G is pissed and then writes the song using G but doesn’t make him the focal point. G still insists that his scale be used however emphasis for notes in his scale will be used for the chord getting all of the attention. He is happy to be in the song and is willing to not have all of his licks and solos revolve around him

Dee Collings half the video is basically about the c major scale. C D E F G A B (C) so we can have a c major, d minor, f major, g major etc until we reach back to that c major. Now all those chords have different shapes as you move them​ across the fretboard. Now if you know that then you can play c major/minor pentatonic scales, every key in this example is c has what we call a relative minor. Relative minor just means the 6th chord of the key that your in so just count from c d e f g (a) it's A minor, everything stays the same like your pentatonic scales don't change when you hear an a minor in the key of c. So now that you know that in the key of c their are chords well their are modes as well. C has its own mode, D has its own mode, E has its own mode etc and it ends back too C. If you want to play the modes it's not necessary to play all of them because their in the key of c already. so if a chord progression had c , a minor, g major you wouldn't have to go to the c mode then a minor mode then g major mode you'd just have to use only one mode for that entire progression. When it came to modes in my guitar lessons 20 years ago I started thinking I would never get that in my head... it would just have been so nice to hear a song an be quickly in the right scale for soloing...that' s what I thought ... I thought I should stop thinking of myself as a solo guitarist... I was happy about my skills in pentatonic, a minor scale, c major scale blues scale and the possibility to shift them all over the fretboard... Now you come along and tell me it's all only about emphasizing... And now I got it. What I learned here is: I never will get into the song theoretically. I want to hear it...and feel it... Maybe it takes a bit longer to get the right scale...but maybe it's more organic... Thank you man!

Wow... I'm blown away. Best explanation. I will be sharing this with everybody interested in learning modes. I've listened to alot of people talk about modes... You have to be at a certain level to understand this, but if you are there, this is completely clear and understandable which I haven't found with others trying to explain it.

Been playing guitar for many years. I've been circling the runway on this topic for years, and because of this video, I FINALLY understand how to dial up parallel modes, and play them with confidence. Suddenly, the circle of 5ths, and scale degrees make sense to me like never before. So many light bulbs went of in my head in the last few days. After watching this lesson, I was able to play along to jam tracks using modes. It felt amazing. THANK YOU!

This is the BEST lesson I've seen on playing modes. You cleared the air like nobody's business!!! I immediately tried several modal backing tracks and I could play them in key perfectly!! (after I'd made the half step adjustment between B and C) I can't thank you enough!

This has always frightened me. I always thought it was so much more complicated and would require serious time and effort. Steve, you make it so simple. I remember trying to learn modes with my old guitar teacher about 5 years ago, I felt that they were too hard and I sounded better just using pentatonic scales. I continued just learning covers and my playing was getting a lot better but I still couldn't make a proper song, when I tried I was just guessing notes and telling it was in the key by ear. But, then Steve comes along and puts out the best tutorial on youtube, everything makes sense now. What tormented me for years I learn the basics of in an hour. I can't thank you enough!
