The "lady" is Mr Quentin Crisp, the Englishman that the song is about. The song is about a gentleman retaining his dignity in the face of homophobia.

It's Branford Marsalis on Sopranissimo Saxophone. Any of the Marsalis family is great music.

The old lady's actually a guy. Quentin Crisp was a British author that moved to America in the 80s. I think I read somewhere he and Sting became friendly and Crisp's stories lead Sting to write Englishman in New York. I suggest looking him up, it's interesting the stuff he went through... I also found out recently that Sting did at least live in NYC at one point.
@emid57264 жыл бұрын
CSeptember He still does. He owns I believe two luxurious apartments in NYC. British ppl are not too crazy about his wife Trudie Styler bc she was considered “home wrecker” at one point (do the google search), so Sting and Trudie moved to NY. He’s of course not in the city right now during COVID outbreak but I hope they will come back once this is all done.

it's a soprano saxophone the guy is playing. Beautiful song by sting. You should check out Fragile, Shape of My Heart and Fields of Gold. And the older gentleman he is featuring is Quentin Crisp, and the song is about being yourself even when people are making fun of you when it comes to your sexuality or anything else! As you thought, a Lady, when in fact it's The Gentleman. That's the point, people would make fun of him being feminine yet he stands tall and is himself in the face of prejudice :)

Yes glad you enjoyed this exquisite song is about Quentin Crisp. The first open homosexual way back when it was frowned upon, so he moved to New York to get away from all the homophobia in the U.K. As for the singer. It is Sting from the band The Police maybe. (If you've heard of them before) I'd be interested to know. You really have been listening to the cream of the crop as far as I can see. 👌
