One of my favorite Sting songs - so glad you liked it. I've always thought of Sting as being his own genre. What I've always liked about him is he always puts his artistic creativity first and never just released what was commercially acceptable at the time. Especially when he creates a magical song like Desert Rose: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWTPiKp4qNGKp8k

This came out in 1993, so it is 30 years old. But still as fresh as ever. Sting is just such a great songwriter. And also the chord progressions, modulations, not the standard 1-5-6-4 stuff. Great musicianship!

I would definitely recommend you listen to and review 'An Englishman In New York' and 'Fields Of Gold' as someone else suggested which are also hit tracks by Sting too! Yes you are correct, the group were called, 'The Police'! He had previously worked as a teacher at a secondary school (teaching pupils between the ages of 11-18 years) before joining the group 'The Police'! I'm sure you will enjoy this track too. He is also married to the actress and film producer Trudy Styler since 1992, they have 4 children together!

Thanks so much for this Sting review. This is my favourite song ever. It's SO beautiful. It is a love song and like, much of Sting's music, it has many layers. It's from one of my favourite albums, Ten Summoners Tales and was used in the movie Leon. The reggae influences you mentioned are prevalent in much of Sting's solo work, and also with The Police. Check out Every Little Thing She Does is Magic, Message in a Bottle, Roxanne (sampled by many rappers), and Sending Out an SOS by the Police. Sting's solo work is sublime though, and I prefer it to his work with the Police. The piano on Still Know Nothin' Bout Me from Ten Summoners Tales is fab, together with Seven Days and the wonderful Heavy Cloud, No Rain. When We Dance is also a fab Sting track. An English man in New York, Desert Rose (with Egyptian singer Cheb Mami) and La Belle Dans Sans Regret (a gorgeous Frencn track) are also sublime.

As I was watching this I got to thinking that I've been a fan of Sting's music for around 45 years now, a big part of the music of my life. He's a great poet and musician. His music crosses genres often, one of the reasons I like it so much. If you are really unfamiliar with his work a most obvious recommendation is "Fields of Gold", "Englishman in New York" is also very well known, lesser known but one I really appreciate is "Ghost story"

As i interpret this song, it is about sincerity vs cynicism. It is about faith vs rational. It about people who like to distance themselves from life and seeing it as a study or a tool "... He deals the cards as a meditation And those he plays never suspect He doesn't play for the money he wins He don't play for respect He deals the cards to find the answer The sacred geometry of chance The hidden law of a probable outcome The numbers lead a dance" or people using words and rationality as excuses for hat they see as the failures of their expectations of life. "... But those who speak know nothing And find out to their cost Like those who curse their luck in too many places And those who fear are lost" And it is about the character in the song claiming that he doesn't like that. "... If I told her that I loved you You'd maybe think there's something wrong I'm not a man of too many faces The mask I wear is one" It is just an interpretation among many others. Tomorrow one may have a totally different one. The important part is always to like/feel/vibe the music and song.

Did you feel that Phil & Sam? You just fell down the Sting (Gordon Sumner) solo & The Police rabbit hole 🕳 he's one of my favorite male singers since I was a kid. Throw a dart at his catalog & you hit a gem. I suggest "Desert Rose" featuring Algerian singer Cheb Mami next. Sting loves world music. Rob Squad said its one of their favorite they have reacted to. Saw the two perform it in concert - excellent! Though The Police were only together around 9 years, their music is some of the most influential with one of the best drummers, Stewart Copeland, making his mark. Enjoy & you're going to need a ladder. 😊 Sting Fields of Gold Desert Rose Englishmen In New York Fragile When We Dance The Police Every Breath You Take (#84 on the Rolling Stone list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and is included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll) yes, it was sampled by P.Diddy 🙄😂 Roxanne Message In A Bottle Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic Don't Stand So Close To Me Wrapped Around Your Finger Synchronicity II (their most complex song written IMO lyrics video is probably good)

There are so many songs from Sting which are not in the radar but which you should definitely check out... My pick: "Children's Crusade". It is unfortunately not very well known but, to my ears, it is one of the best songs he has ever written. Not only that, but he also let his band members loose on this one: the bridge (with Branford Marsalis, Omar Hakim and Kenny Kirkland respectively playing alto sax, drums and keyboards) is fantastic. Formidable, even; in the true sense of the term.

I got into the Police in highschool after Synchronicity had come out, but quickly bought the entire back catalog of 5 albums and have been following his solo career since. I have a giant poster of him that I got in Germany in the early 90s when I was in the army, its of him bowing with a violin and it says "Englishman on Tour". I really love his music and a lot of what he has done outside of it.... playing a role in the first Dune movie... he also played himself in the 2nd season of Only Murders in the Building. Oh and I have tickets to see him live later this month!!!
