Ray, I took my truck in for a oil change and was told it needed a new cabin air filter. I told the writer that was strange, because I had just replaced it about 2 weeks prior. A lot of these shops just tell you things hoping you'll be a good little sheep and do it. This same dealership charged me for an engine air filter, which I had not approved prior to their doing it. I always do my own checks just to make sure the oil level is correct prior to leaving. When I opened the hood it was obvious from the dust covering the air filter housing that it hadn't been touched. I opened it up, removed the filter, and two dead butterflies fell out of it. I took it in and showed the service writer the dirty filter, he called out the service manager who immediately offered a refund. I refused their refund, offers of free oil changes, etc. I let them keep the $50 they stole from me, loudly telling every customer and service writer that if they needed to steal money from customers for service not performed that was fine, but they would never see me again. I also left them a scathing review online. They must have called me 10 times afterward, I refused to take their calls.

Fargin' Bastiges! Why I've returned to doing my own work, where/when I can. Several years ago I was doing 5,000 mile interval oil changes on the Honda Fit I was driving. Asked the girl that I dealt with in the quick lube place to print a sticker for 5K Miles. 'Oh! I can't do that!' Told me my oil was only good for 3,000 miles, then it would start going bad. She had just attended a company seminar and knew that was true. . .

Pro Tip: before pulling the filter out slip a thin piece of carboard the same size as the filter under the old filter. This way when you pull it out any large debris doesn't fall down into the fan. Living in a rural area with a lot trees this has proven helpful.

There is a shop near my job I have my oil changed. They used to do that all the time and tell me it would be $70 for an engine air and $60 for my CAF. I would tell them put it all back, I am not paying you $130 for 2 filters that combined don't cost more than $30 from AutoZone and less than 5 minutes of work. Now they already know not to touch them in my car. Only took them 3 years to learn.

@@edreeves3342 An upsell is a fair practice to try if the price is fair. Any shop that more than doubles the real cost of installation is dishonest. Good luck. Show me where those filters combined cost $30 or less, cabin air filters alone are usually $40-60. If you want to buy garbage Walmart FRAM's that are well-known to fall apart, go for it. Imagine risking your $10,000 engine to save $20 on air filters. You probably spend that at Mcdonald's and don't think twice about it.

The phrase "Trust but verify" originated as a Russian proverb: "Доверяй, но проверяй" (Doверяй, no proveryay). While the exact origin is unclear, it predates its popularization in the 1980s. Though not the originator, Ronald Reagan, the former US President, is widely credited for bringing the phrase to international attention. He used it frequently during nuclear disarmament talks with the Soviet Union.

In addition to inspecting/changing the cabin filter on a regular basis, a simple trick I've done over the years is to turn off the A/C shortly before reaching my destination and allowing the cabin fan to continue blowing on the "fresh air" (not "recirc") setting -- this helps prevent condensation/mold buildup inside the HVAC box and the musty smell therein. My 18 y.o. LS430 has zero HVAC odor (despite living in a dusty SoCal desert environment), so either I'm just lucky or there's actually a benefit to my madness. Of course this only works if your system allows you to manually turn off the compressor (mine does even though it's a fully automatic dual zone system) -- newer vehicles may have eliminated the compressor dash switch entirely.

I think cabin air filters are a great addition to modern vehicles. Back in the day they were rare, but now almost commonplace. Anything to help improve the air for the passengers. In addition to the filter, the evaporator cleaning was very interesting. I've been in vehicles that did have a noticeable odor from the A/C. I guess over time the evaporator does get dirty even with the filter. Thanks for this video. I did enjoy it. 🙂

My 98 4Runner has no cabin air filter - After 20 years the blower squirrel cage was packed full of cottonwood fluff & it started to vibrate, so after removing all that fluff it was good as new and the airflow was back to original volume. Never noticed the reduced air flow as it slowly dropped when the fan filled up over those 20 years. Amazing how much air was making it thru all that fluff....it was packed solid (lots of cottonwood trees here)

Most GM HVAC systems have a feature called "Afterblow" that can be activated using a bidirectional scanner. It works by running the blower for an amount of time, after the vehicle has been driven & parked. This dries out the EVAP from excess moisture, where mold/mildew like to live. Especially useful for humid environments like Florida!

@Ray, I have to do something similar to my BMW 328i every year as rarely the smell comes from the filter which I change every year since I'm in there. On the BMW, it's much easier. While changing the filter, the filter door has a small hole and connecting hose you can snake the evap cleaner to. I just seal up around it with some hot glue which is easy to remove and dries very fast so the foam doesn't back it's way into the cabin. After that, you just empty the can and most of it will eventually drip out the evap drain as it converts itself back too liquid. Then like you, after letting the foam do it's work, I run the ac on low to permeate the cleaner smell through the vents. Last step is an air out and I'm good for another year.

Our BG representative taught us to spray the entire evaporator and spray the BG Frigi Fresh spray down through the middle vents before the fan was activated. We later used the foam through the fan opening or use the long tube supplied with the foam cleaner down through the center vents. Typically, the center vents were closer to the evaporator. In addition, spray Frigi fresh through the outside intake vent (open outside vent doors) so the chemical can be sucked into the evaporator. We would check the condensation drain tube and occasionally see dark matter draining from the drain after the foam spray was used. It worked very well to eliminate mold and mildew. Change your filters every 10-12,000 miles. You would be amazed of the garbage that enters your vehicle cabin. Great posting Ray.

Wow, this procedure with the BG product is completely incorrect. BG Frigi Fresh is to be sprayed thru the outside fresh air vent at the front cowl with the blower motor fan speed ON and not ON recycled air but outside air and cycle thru each vent setting between sprays and the entire product is to be used. Also, BG or any other aftermarket products can be used to clean the evaporator thru the drain tube. This is foam cleaner application and different product. I saw this and all I saw was the product used as a "cologne" and a typical cabin air filter replacement. IMHO and from experience, not how it should be done at all. Improper use of the SNAKE OIL.

They do recommend to change the filter every year. Just like the filter on your home heating/AC unit they get dirty. The problem is where they put them. They have gotten better in the placement of them. But some makes you have to dismantle a lot of stuff to get to the filter. When I went to Auto Zone to get a replacement cabin filter for my 2020 Colorado. The counter person didn't know what he was looking for. After asking about engine size and if it was 4 or 2 wheel drive, he told me that they were out. So I went to O'Reilly. They just asked if I wanted a regular filter or a hepa filter. So asking at the auto parts store may not always be helpful.

I worked at an oil change shop back in the early 2000s. Part of the oil change service was the labor required to check the filters, differential levels, tire pressures, top off fluids, etc. We didn't charge labor for the filter replacement-if you wanted a new one we charged the price of the filter which was based on our cost plus shop markup. Some services like serpentine belt replacement, fuel filter replacement, coolant exchange, transmission pan and filter service etc. were a flat price that included parts and labor. Some vehicles had a considerable profit margin and others we probably lost a little money on depending on the price of parts, quantity of fluids, or how big of a pain the job was. For instance, a transmission service on one car might be quick drop of the pan, filter, new gasket and fluid. Another might require removing a crossmember or transmission mount, and/or jacking up the transmission for clearance, cleaning off old RTV sealant, a more expensive parts kit, etc. That's why there was an incentive to maximize services sold because not everything was an easy moneymaker.

I changed our 2016 QX80 cabin filter last summer at 150k miles. I went after it because the air flow was very low and it was getting hot inside. It blows like a hurricane now.

Another thing to check is the channel under the windshield on the outside. It is where the fresh air inlet is and also where the water coming off the windshield drains. If the drain hole gets blocked it can allow the water to drain inside the vehicle through the fresh air inlet sometimes leaving puddles on your floor board or just soaking your carpets and causing a bad smell.

Some things that can affect breathing is pollen and if the filter gets damp is it can start forming mold and some molds can create bad odors and mess with your breathing. (Electro Static Charging) on some high quality air filters can attract pollen, dust and dirt particles to stick to the filter (by static cling) kind of similar to devices like a Swiffer Dust Wand or Mop used in the home that dust sticks to by static cling.

My vehicle has no cabin air filter. I actually cut small holes in the HVAC box with a Dremel tool. A small round one before the AC coil and a little bigger square one after the coil. The small round in front lets me see how dirty the coil is and spray cleaner in, I had a tad over 100K when I did this and it was unbelievably filthy and clogged. I used one of those foaming house hold cleaners. From the back side square hole I used a shop vac to blow air through the opposite way. Worked pretty well. Afterwards I duct taped up the holes. I check it again In another 100K. lol

Ha. Last year I purchased a 2002 Toyota 4Runner. The next day I went to Autozone to pick up oil and all the filters to service it. The book by the filter section listed a cabin air filter so I got one. After spending way too long looking for it, I did some googeling and found out that my 4Runner doesn't actually have a cabin air filter. In fact, no 3rd gen 4Runner has a cabin air filter.

The reason you may find one listed is because you can add them aftermarket when the vehicle wasn't equipped with one. Definitely more common as an aftermarket item for off-road/4x4 type vehicles.

@@TremaineLea The only aftermarket one I've found is a custom 3d printed contraption with a custom filter. The one at Autozone definitely isn't that. To put in the custom one, you have to remove the fan. I'll just run without.

Just took my 2021 GMC 3500 Denali Dully to the dealer for an oil change and they did exactly what you said about the cabin air filter. They told me the filter needed to be changed, so I said ok. I got the bill and was charged $35.00 for the filter and $25.00 for labor. Yes, they had to take the filter out to see the filter. Didn’t think about the labor charge at that time. Right now I feel stupid and cheated, thanks Ray! One issue, I didn’t ask to see the filter, my bad!

5:04 on the filter question My 42 year olds acura Tl i can see getting charged to do an airfilter The pipes are really stiff new and the filter box is a pain in the ass to open up just to look. Some BMW cabin air filters are hard to get to let alone take out and look at. I never gave it any thought. What did piss me off a month after i did back brakes on my scion TC I got told by the tire store one of the rear shocks were bad, i looked at them when i did the brakes no oil leaks the bushings looked good I didn't see a problem with them and the tec didn't take me out to look. I honestly think he was trying to get me to replace them to get my factor lowering springs, i also saw them doing other work that was questnable and rotating the tires they did not balance the tires on a set of tires that cost 250 each plus labor. 19" rims on a car that stock uses a 15" or 16" rim. The suspicions so stiff on the car I'd know if a shock was bad. I could tell real fast they didn't balance the tires right the time before that. When the car has 37lbs and 39lbs in a tire with a 1.5" sidewall you can feel everything. The shocks are not loose. You pull an air filter out to look thats service, your not in business to give away work but thats still a fine line. Maybe less then normal labor rate or free with other service. Thats kind up to the shop but they should tell you up front. You should always know in advance. Who know you could swing the 15 to 20 bucks on the filter, but the shop labor rate @ 110 to 140 is more then you can afford. And for the 15 min it takes say 25 bucks labor means you can't buy food that week. You should never have a surprise charge on your bill. Thats whats wrong about that its not the labor charge, its finding out later you have to pay it on top of the filter charge. Some people are not handy and will pay you to do it. Others will diy the job. And other people never open the hood. Pointing out issues is something a shop should do but it has to be honest. If someone tells me my shock is bad I want to see it. Were talking about a tec that used a dead blow to take the wheels off the car, the wheels are magnesium And i had just painted them 3 weeks before he put it on the lift, a light hand slap took them right off. No hammer needed. Just a light palm smack.

We used to take my wife's car to a national oil change place because they used Castrol and I like that oil. Every time she went there they would tell her she needed a new air filter, so I pulled it out and it was clean and I had thought I had just replaced it not long before that. Well this went on for 3 or 4 oil changes (she doesn't drive anywhere dirty), she finally told them to change it so they would quit bothering her, for 35 or so dollars. The old one still wasn't dirty, I always make her bring replaced parts home. Now we have to find a new place to change oil

Every car/truck needs a fresh air cabin filter. Not just for making the air you breath cleaner. But it will stop alot of the larger stuff from plugging the evaporator/ heater core. To change that filter a few times a year, is way easier than pulling out a plugged heater core

On your question, you show me dirty filters without asking me to check them. How does the “average” customer even know those are from their car/truck? Many a corrupt business will pull that kind of BS. I do my own work, but my dad always told me request the changed out parts be left in the trunk. I thought that was crazy until I actually saw a friend get charged for the parts and labor and they didn’t change a thing. Great reason to bring your business to a trusted mechanics shop and refer them to your friends. If I didn’t request something I’m not paying for it.

I have a 2006 Trailblazer SS and it doesn't have a cabin air filter GM stopped putting them in the Trailblazer and envoy and so on after 2004 but you can still buy the filter and if you really want to the airbox under the dash is still there with the door slot and screw hole but it's sealed so you have to cutout the opening then find a door from a older model and then your good.
