Richard Pryor pulling the second card out was unscripted, and both their reactions were genuine. That's why their chemistry was so special. Little trivia... The actor who played Grossberger (Erland Van Lidth De Jeude) was an MIT comp. science grad and runners up in the NCAA heavyweight wrestling division. He was also an accomplished opera singer. He would go on to play other bit-roles such as "The Dynamo" in the Arnold flick: "The Running Man". What an interesting and dynamic life!!! RIP!

I remember seeing this when it first premiered in theaters. We all busted out laughing when Gene Wilder begged for another day in the hot box only to laugh even harder after we saw how they had softened up Grossberger in the cell.

The slow camera pan reveal of Pryor's face crying and laughing at the same time while hemmed up against the bed frame gets me EVERY time!! Side Note: If you enjoy the guy playing Grossburger you should check him out in one of my top favorite movies THE WANDERERS - Great movie about NYC street gangs in the 60's Stars Ken Wahl from 80s tv series WISEGUY.

If you start watching this from 1:27 and just focus on Wilder, you can see that he knows Richard is performing genius comedic gold on this take, and he cannot let out his impulse to laugh or he ruins the scene they are capturing. Never gets old re-watching these two.

The jail cell scene has got to be the funniest scene ever in comedy movie History. Gene was even breaking character, smiling, but it didn't matter, I guess as long as he didn't start laughing. There are tears rolling down my face watching that hilarious scene. My God Richard Pryor is so funny.
