Thank goodness it is. ABC is becoming increasingly the ‘CNN of Australia’ except funded by Australian taxpayers spanning a population with 40%+ Christians. I am personally agnostic but respect people who have found or follow religion for purpose and a positive influence. While I personally don’t agree with the views of Thorburn’s church on gays and abortion, I RESPECT and TOLERATE other people’s opinions. Compassion is not words, it is actions and behaviours. Jacinta Price’s first speech to the parliament inspires this message and unites Australians. This is a far cry from whiney lefties and defensive right wingers. Jacinta is one of the few parliamentarians with a holistic and truly considerate view. All power to her. Shame the ABC lacks maturity and has drifted left to appease the virtue signalling narrative that continues to fragment and set-back this mighty country.

To me this isn't about bigotry or anything you can cast as such and to say so is missing the real point. No two people share the same ideals or philosophies in totality. So who gets to determine what is acceptable and what is not? How about differing views on climate change, on wealth distribution, on pharmaceutical drug prescriptions, on the rights of various groups, abortion, gender quotas etc.? Controlling thought was what the Stasi was about, so people would utter one thing and think something else. We all know where that ended up. This "inclusive" organisation cannot tolerate people who don't approve of the homosexual lifestyle choice. So does this mean that now all Muslims and people of other faiths or who share this view can no longer work for an "inclusive" organisation? What's next to be audited? Another question - is disapproving of the homosexual lifestyle choice the same thing as homophobia? To me they are different. For example, my parents are believing Christians and don't agree with the homosexual choice, but they have spent a lifetime supporting needy people who are druggies, gays, trans etc. with selfless love and no judgement. So to me they are different things. While some are very judgemental, many more simultaneously disapprove of the act of homosexuality but have unconditional love and support for homosexuals. Easy to bash Christians at every opportunity, but really this is about everyone's right to hold a view on anything and the extent to which that can be used against them. Bit scary IMHO. Cheers - Dave

How easily these people forget, that freedom of religion also means freedom from religion. They quickly forget that the 'nones' are now the largest religious group in the country. As always with Christians and conservatives alike wilful ignorance, cognitive dissonance and rank hypocrisy. Civilisation was built on well reasoned ideas, humanist ideals and constant evolution over thousands of years, not religion. How easily they forget democracy was invented through philosophy, not theology. @Proper Clearly as CEO he has to take responsibility, but also as CEO, he's not across the detail of every part of the machine. Many individuals within the org structure were involved in the establishment of the systems and procedures that led to overcharging and there would probably be no individual who was across the lot. I'm not sure that there was a clearly articulated policy of overcharging from the top. A CEO has a lot on his/her plate (I've had a bit to do with a number of them over the years) and it is not uncommon for significant matters to be obfuscated from the upper echelons, sometimes for signifiant periods. However, as said, the buck certainly has to stop somewhere and for something of this scale, that was clearly with the big Kahuna. (A poorly described layman's view, taken from my own personal experiences within large orgs, including banks). Back to my original point - I think it's a bit rich to call his "Christianity" into question based on the above, though it could certainly appear a bit shaky to someone wanting to be judmental about it with limited analysis. If they did, millions of practicing Christians would be disqualified from holding jobs in the Australian work force. Or is this the new norm where Christians are to be ostracized and treated as outcasts in Australian society ? Is it not discrimination to dismiss someone for there religious beliefs. If we chose to live in a secular society then surely we understand it’s fine to hold a religious view while working alongside those who hold or follow other values. Diversity does not mean that I must change my belief to work with others, it means I accept working with people with all backgrounds in a professional way even if I disagree with them. .. as a professional when dealing with others we don’t let there personal beliefs enter into the professional dialogue and discourse. Media watch I have always respected your analysis but I think in this you have missed the boat.

I think one of the main reasons is the fact that he never denounced the views. Distancing yourself from their views is one thing, but denouncing them shows that he is prepared to publicly call out parts of his church that he doesn't agree with - and I don't think he was prepared to do that.
@Rage_Harder_Then_Relax2 жыл бұрын
Missed the boat? Ahh, no. I don't see where that is AT ALL. It's all common sense which I know is difficult for some. When you infringe on my rights that's where your rights stop. Even more so when it's law, let alone just have respect and treating EVERYONE with dignity even if you disagree. People shouldn't have an opinion on things like LGBT if they're aren't gonna follow that course. They expect it from others yet are unwilling to give those others the same treatment. These people want their cake and eat it too. Like the Christian Taliban in the US right now. That is their playbook and as usual elements in Australia follow suit. Society in western nations especially was pretty smart (possibly just the one time only) to introduce secularism in politics because of these attitudes coming from people who still live in the distant past. These are the same people who call Muslims barbarians yet can't see their own hypocrisies'.

This man was standing by what is written in scripture therefore, it is indeed an attack on Christianity. He was standing against mans views and laws, not Gods. Thats an objective view. Ok (Miss American commentor, on Australian issues) - so we adhere to Christian teachings as it is God's law. But then we must also look at Shariah Law and adhere to the Prophet Muhammad's teaching (as he was a direct prophet of Allah). Next we must adhere to the writings in the Tanakh as they are the laws of Yahweh. I've forgotten many other faiths (my apologies) but do you see the point yet? People can believe in and follow their religious laws, but they also must follow the laws of man if they want to fit into a mixed society. This is the whole point of tolerance to EVERYONE, but being intolerant to any form of intolerance (whether religious bigotry, racial bigotry, gender bigotry etc.)

As stated by this gods foremost Prophet Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. The thing that Media Watch neglected to mention is that (the act of) homosexuality and abortion being sinful is not a fringe Christian belief - the vast majority of mainline denominations, including Catholicism and Anglicanism, among others, have those as official church doctrine. Indeed, so do many sects of Islam and other religious groups. If we follow this logic to its conclusion, that nobody of a religious faith that holds these tenets, regardless of their own personal conviction, can hold a prominent public position, that will be a sad day for Australia.
